Deutéronome 6

1 Voici les commandements, les lois et les ordonnances que l'Éternel, ton Dieu, a ordonné de t'enseigner, afin que tu les mettes en pratique dans le pays dont tu vas prendre possession;

Now this is the commandment, the statutes, and the judgments, which the LORD your God commanded to teach you, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go over to possess it:

2 afin que tu craignes l'Éternel, ton Dieu, et que tu observes toutes ses lois et tous ses commandements, que je te prescris, à toi, à ton fils et au fils de ton fils, tous les jours de ta vie, et afin que tes jours se prolongent.

that thou mightest fear the LORD thy God, to keep all his statutes and his commandments, which I command thee, thou, and thy son, and thy son’s son, all the days of thy life; and that thy days may be prolonged.

3 Écoute donc, Israël, et applique-toi à les mettre en pratique, afin que tu sois heureux et que tu croisses puissamment, comme te l'a promis l'Éternel, le Dieu de tes pères, dans un pays où coulent le lait et le miel.

Hear therefore, O Israel, and observe to do it; that it may be well with thee, and that ye may increase mightily, as the LORD, the God of thy fathers, hath promised unto thee, in a land flowing with milk and honey.

4 Écoute, Israël: Yahvé est notre Dieu. Yahvé est unique.

Hear, O Israel: the LORD our God is one LORD:

5 Tu aimeras l'Éternel, ton Dieu, de tout ton cœur, de toute ton âme et de toute ta force.

and thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.

6 Ces paroles, que je te prescris aujourd'hui, seront gravées dans ton cœur.

And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be upon thine heart:

7 Tu les enseigneras avec soin à tes enfants, et tu en parleras quand tu seras assis dans ta maison, quand tu marcheras sur le chemin, quand tu te coucheras et quand tu te lèveras.

and thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.

8 Tu les lieras comme un signe sur ta main, et ils seront comme des fronteaux entre tes yeux.

And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be for frontlets between thine eyes.

9 Tu les écriras sur les montants de la porte de ta maison et sur tes portes.

And thou shalt write them upon the door posts of thy house, and upon thy gates.

10 Lorsque Yahvé, ton Dieu, te fera entrer dans le pays qu'il a juré à tes pères, Abraham, Isaac et Jacob, de te donner, tu auras des villes grandes et magnifiques que tu n'auras pas bâties,

And it shall be, when the LORD thy God shall bring thee into the land which he sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give thee; great and goodly cities, which thou buildedst not,

11 des maisons pleines de toutes sortes de biens que tu n'auras pas remplies, des citernes creusées que tu n'auras pas creusées, des vignes et des oliviers que tu n'auras pas plantés, et tu mangeras et te rassasieras;

and houses full of all good things, which thou filledst not, and cisterns hewn out, which thou hewedst not, vineyards and olive trees, which thou plantedst not, and thou shalt eat and be full;

12 alors garde-toi d'oublier Yahvé, qui t'a fait sortir du pays d'Égypte, de la maison de servitude.

then beware lest thou forget the LORD, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

13 Tu craindras Yahvé, ton Dieu, tu le serviras et tu jureras par son nom.

Thou shalt fear the LORD thy God; and him shalt thou serve, and shalt swear by his name.

14 Tu n'iras pas après d'autres dieux, des dieux des peuples qui t'entourent,

Ye shall not go after other gods, of the gods of the peoples which are round about you;

15 car Yahvé ton Dieu est un Dieu jaloux au milieu de toi, de peur que la colère de Yahvé ton Dieu ne s'enflamme contre toi et qu'il ne te fasse disparaître de la surface de la terre.

for the LORD thy God in the midst of thee is a jealous God; lest the anger of the LORD thy God be kindled against thee, and he destroy thee from off the face of the earth.

16 Tu ne tenteras pas l'Éternel, ton Dieu, comme tu l'as tenté à Massa.

Ye shall not tempt the LORD your God, as ye tempted him in Massah.

17 Tu observeras avec soin les commandements de l'Éternel, ton Dieu, ses témoignages et ses lois, qu'il t'a prescrits.

Ye shall diligently keep the commandments of the LORD your God, and his testimonies, and his statutes, which he hath commanded thee.

18 Tu feras ce qui est droit et bon aux yeux de l'Éternel, afin que tu sois heureux et que tu entres en possession du bon pays que l'Éternel a juré à tes pères,

And thou shalt do that which is right and good in the sight of the LORD: that it may be well with thee, and that thou mayest go in and possess the good land which the LORD sware unto thy fathers,

19 en chassant tous tes ennemis devant toi, comme l'Éternel l'a dit.

to thrust out all thine enemies from before thee, as the LORD hath spoken.

20 Lorsque ton fils t'interrogera dans le futur, en disant: « Que signifient les témoignages, les lois et les ordonnances que Yahvé notre Dieu t'a prescrits? »

When thy son asketh thee in time to come, saying, What mean the testimonies, and the statutes, and the judgments, which the LORD our God hath commanded you?

21 tu répondras à ton fils: « Nous étions esclaves de Pharaon en Égypte. Yahvé nous a fait sortir d'Égypte d'une main puissante;

then thou shalt say unto thy son, We were Pharaoh’s bondmen in Egypt; and the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand:

22 et Yahvé a accompli sous nos yeux des signes et des prodiges immenses et impressionnants sur l'Égypte, sur Pharaon et sur toute sa maison;

and the LORD shewed signs and wonders, great and sore, upon Egypt, upon Pharaoh, and upon all his house, before our eyes:

23 et il nous a fait sortir de là, afin de nous faire entrer, pour nous donner le pays qu'il avait juré à nos pères.

and he brought us out from thence, that he might bring us in, to give us the land which he sware unto our fathers.

24 L'Éternel nous a ordonné de mettre en pratique toutes ces lois, de craindre l'Éternel, notre Dieu, pour notre bien à tous les instants, afin qu'il nous conserve la vie, comme nous l'avons aujourd'hui.

And the LORD commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear the LORD our God, for our good always, that he might preserve us alive, as at this day.

25 Ce sera pour nous une justice, si nous observons de mettre en pratique tous ces commandements devant Yahvé notre Dieu, comme il nous l'a ordonné. »

And it shall be righteousness unto us, if we observe to do all this commandment before the LORD our God, as he hath commanded us.
