Deutéronome 5
1 Moïse appela tout Israël, et leur dit: « Écoutez, Israël, les lois et les ordonnances que je prononce aujourd'hui à vos oreilles, afin que vous les appreniez et que vous ayez soin de les mettre en pratique. »
And Moses summoned all of Israel, and he said to them: “Listen, O Israel, to the ceremonies and judgments, which I am speaking to your ears on this day. Learn them, and fulfill them in deed.
2 Yahvé, notre Dieu, a fait alliance avec nous à Horeb.
The Lord our God formed a covenant with us at Horeb.
3 Yahvé n'a pas fait cette alliance avec nos pères, mais avec nous, même nous, qui sommes tous ici, vivants, aujourd'hui.
He did not make the covenant with our fathers, but with us, who are alive and in the present time.
4 Yahvé vous a parlé face à face sur la montagne, au milieu du feu,
He spoke to us face to face on the mountain, from the midst of fire.
5 (je me tenais alors entre Yahvé et vous, pour vous montrer la parole de Yahvé; car vous aviez peur à cause du feu, et vous n'êtes pas montés sur la montagne) en disant,
I was the mediator, for I was in the middle between the Lord and you, at that time, to announce his words to you. For you were afraid of the fire, and so you did not ascend to the mountain. And he said:
6 « Je suis Yahvé ton Dieu, qui t'a fait sortir du pays d'Égypte, de la maison de servitude.
‘I am the Lord your God, who led you away from the land of Egypt, from the house of servitude.
7 « Tu n'auras pas d'autres dieux devant moi.
You shall not have strange gods in my sight.
8 « Tu ne te feras pas d'image taillée, ni de représentation de ce qui est dans les cieux en haut, ni de ce qui est sur la terre en bas, ni de ce qui est dans les eaux sous la terre.
You shall not make for yourself a graven image, nor the likeness of anything, which is in heaven above, or on earth below, or which abides in the waters under the earth.
9 Tu ne te prosterneras pas devant elles et tu ne les serviras pas, car moi, Yahvé ton Dieu, je suis un Dieu jaloux, qui punit l'iniquité des pères sur les enfants, sur la troisième et la quatrième génération de ceux qui me haïssent
You shall not adore and you shall not worship these things. For I am the Lord your God, a jealous God, repaying the iniquity of the fathers upon the sons to the third and fourth generation to those who hate me,
10 et qui fait preuve de bonté envers les milliers de ceux qui m'aiment et qui gardent mes commandements.
and acting with mercy in thousands of ways to those who love me and keep my precepts.
11 « Tu n'abuseras pas du nom de Yahvé ton Dieu, car Yahvé ne laissera pas impuni celui qui abusera de son nom.
You shall not use the name of the Lord your God in vain. For he will not go unpunished who takes up his name over an unimportant matter.
12 « Observe le jour du sabbat, pour le sanctifier, comme Yahvé ton Dieu te l'a ordonné.
Observe the day of the Sabbath, so that you may sanctify it, just as the Lord your God has instructed you.
13 Tu travailleras six jours, et tu feras tout ton ouvrage;
For six days, you shall labor and do all your work.
14 mais le septième jour est un sabbat pour l'Éternel, ton Dieu, où tu ne feras aucun ouvrage, ni toi, ni ton fils, ni ta fille, ni ton serviteur, ni ta servante, ni ton bœuf, ni ton âne, ni aucun de tes animaux, ni l'étranger qui est dans tes portes, afin que ton serviteur et ta servante se reposent aussi bien que toi.
The seventh is the day of the Sabbath, that is, the rest of the Lord your God. You shall not do any work in it, nor shall your son, nor daughter, nor man servant, nor woman servant, nor ox, nor donkey, nor any of your cattle, nor the sojourner who is within your gates, so that your men and woman servants may rest, just as you do.
15 Tu te souviendras que tu as été esclave au pays d'Égypte, et que Yahvé ton Dieu t'en a fait sortir par une main puissante et un bras étendu. C'est pourquoi Yahvé ton Dieu t'a ordonné d'observer le jour du sabbat.
Remember that you also were servants in Egypt, and the Lord your God led you away from that place with a strong hand and an outstretched arm. Because of this, he has instructed you so that you would observe the Sabbath day.
16 « Honore ton père et ta mère, comme Yahvé ton Dieu te l'a ordonné, afin que tes jours se prolongent et que tu sois heureux dans le pays que Yahvé ton Dieu te donne.
Honor your father and mother, just as the Lord your God has instructed you, so that you may live a long time, and so that it may be well with you in the land, which the Lord your God will give to you.
17 « Tu ne commettras pas de meurtre.
You shall not murder.
18 « Tu ne commettras pas d'adultère.
And you shall not commit adultery.
19 « Tu ne voleras pas.
And you shall not commit theft.
20 « Tu ne porteras pas de faux témoignage contre ton prochain.
Neither shall you speak false testimony against your neighbor.
21 « Tu ne convoiteras pas la femme de ton prochain. Tu ne convoiteras pas non plus la maison de ton prochain, ni son champ, ni son serviteur, ni sa servante, ni son bœuf, ni son âne, ni rien de ce qui appartient à ton prochain. »
You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his house, nor his field, nor his man servant, nor his woman servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything out of all that is his.’
22 Yahvé adressa ces paroles à toute votre assemblée sur la montagne, du milieu du feu, de la nuée et de l'obscurité, avec une voix forte. Il n'ajouta rien de plus. Il les a écrites sur deux tables de pierre et me les a données.
The Lord spoke these words to the entire multitude of you on the mountain, from the midst of the fire and the cloud and the darkness, with a loud voice, adding nothing more. And he wrote them on two tablets of stone, which he delivered to me.
23 Lorsque vous avez entendu la voix au milieu des ténèbres, pendant que la montagne était embrasée, vous vous êtes approchés de moi, tous les chefs de vos tribus et vos anciens,
Then, after you heard the voice from the midst of the darkness, and you saw the mountain burning, you approached me, all you leaders of the tribes and those greater by birth. And you said:
24 et vous avez dit: « Voici que Yahvé, notre Dieu, nous a montré sa gloire et sa grandeur, et nous avons entendu sa voix au milieu du feu. Nous avons vu aujourd'hui que Dieu parle à l'homme et qu'il vit.
‘Behold, the Lord our God has revealed to us his majesty and his greatness. We have heard his voice from the midst of fire, and we have proven today that, though God is speaking with man, man has lived.
25 Maintenant donc, pourquoi mourrions-nous? Car ce grand feu va nous consumer. Si nous entendons encore la voix de Yahvé notre Dieu, nous mourrons.
Therefore, why should we die, and why should this very great fire devour us? For if we hear the voice of the Lord our God any longer, we will die.
26 Car qui, de toute chair, a entendu comme nous la voix du Dieu vivant, parlant du milieu du feu, et a vécu?
What is all flesh, that it would hear the voice of the living God, who speaks from the midst of fire, just as we have heard it, and be able to live?
27 Approchez-vous, et écoutez tout ce que l'Éternel, notre Dieu, dira, et dites-nous tout ce que l'Éternel, notre Dieu, vous dira; nous l'écouterons et nous le ferons. »
Instead, you should approach and listen to all the things that the Lord our God will say to you. And you will speak to us, and we will listen and do these things.’
28 L'Éternel a entendu la voix de tes paroles quand tu m'as parlé, et l'Éternel m'a dit: « J'ai entendu la voix des paroles de ce peuple, qu'il t'a dites. Ils ont bien dit tout ce qu'ils ont dit.
But when the Lord had heard this, he said to me: ‘I have heard the voice of the words of this people, which they spoke to you. All this, they have spoken well.
29 Oh! s'il y avait en eux un cœur tel qu'ils me craignent et gardent toujours tous mes commandements, afin que tout aille bien pour eux et pour leurs enfants à jamais!
Who will grant to them to have such a mind, so that they may fear me, and may keep all my commandments at all times, so that it may be well with them and with their sons forever?
30 Allez leur dire: « Retournez dans vos tentes ».
Go and say to them: Return to your tents.
31 Mais toi, reste ici près de moi, et je te dirai tous les commandements, les lois et les ordonnances que tu leur enseigneras, afin qu'ils les mettent en pratique dans le pays dont je leur donne la possession. »
But as for you, stand here with me, and I will speak to you all my commandments and ceremonies, as well as judgments. These, you shall teach them, so that they may do them in the land, which I will give to them as a possession.
32 Tu feras donc ce que Yahvé ton Dieu t'a ordonné. Tu ne te détourneras ni à droite ni à gauche.
And so, keep and do the things which the Lord God has commanded you. You shall not turn aside, neither to the right, nor to the left.
33 Tu marcheras dans toute la voie que l'Éternel, ton Dieu, t'a prescrite, afin que tu vives et que tu sois heureux, et afin que tu prolonges tes jours dans le pays dont tu auras la possession.
For you shall walk in the way that the Lord your God has instructed, so that you may live, and it may be well with you, and your days may be extended in the land of your possession.’”
