Deutéronome 4
1 Maintenant, Israël, écoute les lois et les ordonnances que je t'enseigne, pour les mettre en pratique, afin que tu vives, que tu entres et que tu possèdes le pays que Yahvé, le Dieu de tes pères, te donne.
Nowe therefore hearken, O Israel, vnto the ordinances and to the lawes which I teache you to doe, that ye may liue and goe in, and possesse the lande, which the Lord God of your fathers giueth you.
2 Vous n'ajouterez rien à la parole que je vous prescris, et vous n'en retrancherez rien, afin d'observer les commandements de l'Éternel, votre Dieu, que je vous prescris.
Ye shall put nothing vnto the word which I command you, neither shall ye take ought there from, that ye may keepe the commandements of the Lord your God which I commande you.
3 Tes yeux ont vu ce que l'Éternel a fait à cause de Baal Peor; car l'Éternel, ton Dieu, a fait disparaître du milieu de toi tous les hommes qui suivaient Baal Peor.
Your eyes haue seene what the Lord did because of Baal-Peor, for al the men that folowed Baal-Peor the Lord thy God hath destroyed euery one from among you.
4 Mais vous, qui avez été fidèles à l'Éternel, votre Dieu, vous êtes tous vivants aujourd'hui.
But ye that did cleaue vnto the Lord your God, are aliue euery one of you this day.
5 Voici, je vous ai enseigné des lois et des ordonnances, comme l'Éternel, mon Dieu, me l'a ordonné, afin que vous les mettiez en pratique au milieu du pays dont vous allez prendre possession.
Behold, I haue taught you ordinances, and lawes, as the Lord my God commanded me, that ye should doe euen so within the land whither ye goe to possesse it.
6 Gardez-les donc et mettez-les en pratique, car c'est là votre sagesse et votre intelligence aux yeux des peuples qui entendront toutes ces lois et qui diront: « Certes, cette grande nation est un peuple sage et intelligent. »
Keepe them therefore, and doe them; for that is your wisdome, and your vnderstanding in the sight of the people, which shall heare all these ordinances, and shall say, Onely this people is wise, and of vnderstanding, and a great nation.
7 Car quelle est la grande nation qui ait un dieu aussi proche d'elle que l'est Yahvé, notre Dieu, quand nous l'invoquons?
For what nation is so great, vnto whome the gods come so neere vnto them, as the Lord our God is neere vnto vs, in all that we call vnto him for?
8 Quelle est la grande nation qui ait des lois et des ordonnances aussi justes que toute cette loi que je vous présente aujourd'hui?
And what nation is so great, that hath ordinances and lawes so righteous, as all this Lawe, which I set before you this day?
9 Seulement, prends garde et garde ton âme avec soin, de peur que tu n'oublies les choses que tes yeux ont vues et qu'elles ne s'éloignent de ton cœur tous les jours de ta vie; mais fais-les connaître à tes enfants et aux enfants de tes enfants -
But take heede to thy selfe, and keepe thy soule diligently, that thou forget not the thinges which thine eyes haue seene, and that they depart not out of thine heart, all the dayes of thy life: but teach them thy sonnes, and thy sonnes sonnes:
10 le jour où tu t'es tenu devant l'Éternel, ton Dieu, à Horeb, quand l'Éternel m'a dit: « Assemble le peuple auprès de moi, et je leur ferai entendre mes paroles, afin qu'ils apprennent à me craindre tous les jours qu'ils vivront sur la terre, et qu'ils les enseignent à leurs enfants. »
Forget not the day that thou stoodest before the Lord thy God in Horeb, when the Lord said vnto me, Gather me the people together, and I wil cause them heare my wordes, that they may learne to feare me all the dayes that they shall liue vpon the earth, and that they may teache their children:
11 Vous vous êtes approchés et vous vous êtes tenus sous la montagne. La montagne brûlait de feu jusqu'au cœur du ciel, avec des ténèbres, des nuages et une obscurité épaisse.
Then came you neere and stoode vnder the mountaine, and the mountaine burnt with fire vnto the mids of heauen, and there was darkenesse, cloudes and mist.
12 Yahvé vous a parlé du milieu du feu: vous avez entendu des paroles, mais vous n'avez pas vu de forme, vous avez seulement entendu une voix.
And the Lord spake vnto you out of the middes of the fire, and ye heard the voyce of the wordes, but sawe no similitude, saue a voyce.
13 Il vous a annoncé son alliance, qu'il vous a ordonné d'exécuter, les dix commandements. Il les a écrits sur deux tables de pierre.
Then hee declared vnto you his couenant which he commanded you to doe, euen the ten commandements, and wrote them vpon two tables of stone.
14 En ce temps-là, Yahvé m'a ordonné de vous enseigner des lois et des ordonnances, afin que vous les mettiez en pratique dans le pays dont vous allez prendre possession.
And the Lord commanded me that same time, that I should teach you ordinances and lawes, which ye should obserue in the lande, whither ye goe, to possesse it.
15 Soyez très attentifs, car vous n'avez vu aucune forme le jour où l'Éternel vous a parlé à Horeb, du milieu du feu,
Take therefore good heede vnto your selues: for ye sawe no image in the day that the Lord spake vnto you in Horeb out of the middes of the fire:
16 de peur que vous ne vous corrompiez et que vous ne vous fassiez une image taillée, sous la forme d'une figure quelconque, la ressemblance d'un mâle ou d'une femelle,
That ye corrupt not your selues, and make you a grauen image or representation of any figure: whither it be the likenes of male or female,
17 la ressemblance de tout animal qui est sur la terre, la ressemblance de tout oiseau ailé qui vole dans le ciel,
The likenes of any beast that is on earth, or the likenesse of any fethered foule that flieth in the aire:
18 la ressemblance de tout ce qui rampe sur le sol, la ressemblance de tout poisson qui est dans l'eau sous la terre;
Or the likenesse of any thing that creepeth on the earth, or the likenesse of any fish that is in the waters beneath the earth,
19 et de peur que, levant les yeux vers le ciel, tu ne voies le soleil, la lune et les étoiles, toute l'armée du ciel, et que tu ne te laisses entraîner à les adorer et à les servir, eux que l'Éternel, ton Dieu, a donnés à tous les peuples qui sont sous le ciel entier.
And lest thou lift vp thine eyes vnto heauen, and when thou seest the sunne and the moone and the starres with all the host of heauen, shouldest bee driuen to worship them and serue them, which the Lord thy God hath distributed to all people vnder the whole heauen.
20 Mais l'Éternel t'a pris et t'a fait sortir de la fournaise de fer, de l'Égypte, pour être à ses yeux un peuple d'héritage, comme il en est aujourd'hui.
But the Lord hath taken you and brought you out of the yron fornace: out of Egypt to be vnto him a people and inheritance, as appeareth this day.
21 Mais l'Éternel s'est irrité contre moi à cause de vous, et il a juré que je ne passerais pas le Jourdain, et que je n'entrerais pas dans le bon pays que l'Éternel, ton Dieu, te donne en héritage;
And the Lord was angrie with me for your words, and sware that I should not goe ouer Iorden, and that I should not goe in vnto that good land, which the Lord thy God giueth thee for an inheritance.
22 mais je dois mourir dans ce pays. Je ne passerai pas le Jourdain, mais toi, tu passeras et tu posséderas ce bon pays.
For I must die in this land, and shall not go ouer Iorden: but ye shall goe ouer, and possesse that good land.
23 Prenez garde que vous n'oubliiez l'alliance de l'Éternel, votre Dieu, qu'il a conclue avec vous, et que vous ne vous fassiez une image taillée en forme de ce que l'Éternel, votre Dieu, vous a interdit.
Take heede vnto your selues, least ye forget the couenant of the Lord your God which hee made with you, and least ye make you any grauen image, or likenes of any thing, as the Lord thy God hath charged thee.
24 Car l'Éternel, ton Dieu, est un feu dévorant, un Dieu jaloux.
For the Lord thy God is a consuming fire, and a ielous God.
25 Lorsque vous aurez engendré des enfants et des enfants d'enfants, que vous aurez séjourné longtemps dans le pays, et que vous vous serez corrompus, que vous vous serez fait une image taillée en forme de quoi que ce soit, et que vous aurez fait ce qui est mal aux yeux de l'Éternel, votre Dieu, pour l'irriter,
When thou shalt beget children and childrens children, and shalt haue remained long in the land, if ye corrupt your selues, and make any grauen image, or likenes of any thing, and worke euill in the sight of the Lord thy God, to prouoke him to anger,
26 j'en prends aujourd'hui à témoin contre vous le ciel et la terre: vous disparaîtrez bientôt du pays dont vous prendrez possession en passant le Jourdain. Vous n'y prolongerez pas vos jours, mais vous serez entièrement détruits.
I call heauen and earth to record against you this day, that ye shall shortly perish from the land, whereunto ye goe ouer Iorden to possesse it: ye shall not prolong your dayes therein, but shall vtterly be destroyed.
27 Yahvé vous dispersera parmi les peuples, et vous resterez peu nombreux parmi les nations où Yahvé vous conduira.
And the Lord shall scatter you among the people, and ye shall be left few in nomber among the nations, whither the Lord shall bring you:
28 Là, vous servirez des dieux, ouvrage de la main de l'homme, bois et pierre, qui ne voient ni n'entendent, ne mangent ni ne sentent.
And there ye shall serue gods, euen ye worke of mans hand, wood, and stone, which neither see, nor heare, nor eate, nor smelll.
29 Mais de là, tu chercheras Yahvé ton Dieu, et tu le trouveras, si tu le cherches de tout ton cœur et de toute ton âme.
But if from thence thou shalt seeke the Lord thy God, thou shalt finde him, if thou seeke him with all thine heart, and with all thy soule.
30 Quand tu seras dans l'oppression, et que toutes ces choses t'arriveront, dans la suite des temps, tu reviendras à l'Éternel, ton Dieu, et tu écouteras sa voix.
When thou art in tribulation, and all these things are come vpon thee, at the length if thou returne to the Lord thy God, and bee obedient vnto his voyce,
31 Car Yahvé ton Dieu est un Dieu de miséricorde. Il ne te laissera pas tomber, ne te détruira pas et n'oubliera pas l'alliance de tes pères qu'il leur a jurée.
(For the Lord thy God is a mercifull God) he will not forsake thee, neither destroy thee, nor forget the couenant of thy fathers, which hee sware vnto them.
32 Car demandez-vous maintenant, parmi les jours passés, qui vous ont précédés, depuis le jour où Dieu a créé l'homme sur la terre, et d'une extrémité du ciel à l'autre, s'il y a eu quelque chose d'aussi grand que cette chose, ou si l'on a entendu quelque chose de semblable?
For inquire now of the dayes that are past, which were before thee, since the day that God created man vpon the earth, and aske from the one ende of heauen vnto the other, if there came to passe such a great thing as this, or whether any such like thing hath bene heard.
33 Un peuple a-t-il jamais entendu la voix de Dieu parlant du milieu du feu, comme vous l'avez entendue, et vit-il?
Did euer people heare the voyce of God speaking out of the middes of a fire, as thou hast heard, and liued?
34 Ou bien Dieu a-t-il essayé d'aller prendre pour lui une nation au milieu d'une autre nation, par des épreuves, par des signes, par des prodiges, par la guerre, par une main puissante, par un bras étendu, et par de grandes terreurs, selon tout ce que Yahvé ton Dieu a fait pour toi en Égypte, sous tes yeux?
Or hath God assayed to go and take him a nation from among nations, by tentations, by signes, and by wonders, and by warre, and by a mightie hand, and by a stretched out arme, and by great feare, according vnto all that the Lord your God did vnto you in Egypt before your eyes?
35 Cela vous a été montré pour que vous sachiez que Yahvé est Dieu. Il n'y a personne d'autre que lui.
Vnto thee it was shewed, that thou mightest knowe, that the Lord hee is God, and that there is none but he alone.
36 Du haut des cieux, il vous a fait entendre sa voix, pour qu'il vous instruise. Sur la terre, il vous a fait voir son grand feu, et vous avez entendu ses paroles au milieu du feu.
Out of heauen hee made thee heare his voyce to instruct thee, and vpon earth he shewed thee his great fire, and thou heardest his voyce out of the middes of the fire.
37 Parce qu'il a aimé vos pères, il a choisi leurs descendants après eux, et il vous a fait sortir d'Égypte par sa présence, par sa grande puissance,
And because hee loued thy fathers, therefore hee chose their seede after them, and hath brought thee out of Egypt in his sight by his mightie power,
38 pour chasser devant vous des nations plus grandes et plus puissantes que vous, pour vous faire entrer, pour vous donner leur pays en héritage, comme il l'est aujourd'hui.
To thrust out nations greater and mightier then thou, before thee, to bring thee in, and to giue thee their land for inheritance: as appeareth this day.
39 Sachez donc aujourd'hui, et prenez-le à cœur, que Yahvé lui-même est Dieu en haut dans les cieux et en bas sur la terre. Il n'y a personne d'autre.
Vnderstande therefore this day, and consider in thine heart, that the Lord, he is God in heauen aboue, and vpon the earth beneath: there is none other.
40 Tu observeras ses lois et ses commandements que je te prescris aujourd'hui, afin que tout aille bien pour toi et pour tes enfants après toi, et que tu prolonges tes jours dans le pays que Yahvé ton Dieu te donne à perpétuité.
Thou shalt keepe therefore his ordinances, and his commandements which I commaund thee this day, that it may goe well with thee, and with thy children after thee, and that thou mayst prolong thy dayes vpon the earth, which the Lord thy God giueth thee for euer.
41 Moïse mit à part trois villes au-delà du Jourdain, vers le soleil levant,
Then Moses separated three cities on this side of Iorden toward the sunne rising:
42 afin que s'y réfugie le meurtrier qui tue involontairement son prochain et qui ne le haïssait pas autrefois, et qu'en s'enfuyant dans l'une de ces villes, il puisse vivre:
That the slayer should flee thither, which had killed his neighbour at vnwares, and hated him not in time past, might flee, I say, vnto one of those cities, and liue:
43 Bezer au désert, dans la plaine, pour les Rubénites; Ramoth en Galaad pour les Gadites; et Golan en Basan pour les Manassites.
That is, Bezer in the wildernesse, in the plaine countrey of the Reubenites: and Ramoth in Gilead among the Gadites: and Golan in Bashan among them of Manasseh.
44 Telle est la loi que Moïse mit devant les enfants d'Israël.
So this is the law which Moses set before the children of Israel.
45 Tels sont les témoignages, les lois et les ordonnances que Moïse adressa aux enfants d'Israël à leur sortie d'Égypte,
These are the witnesses, and the ordinances, and the lawes which Moses declared to the children of Israel after they came out of Egypt,
46 de l'autre côté du Jourdain, dans la vallée en face de Beth Peor, au pays de Sihon, roi des Amoréens, qui habitait à Hesbon, et que Moïse et les enfants d'Israël battirent à leur sortie d'Égypte.
On this side Iorden, in the valley ouer against Beth-peor, in the land of Sihon King of the Amorites, which dwelt at Heshbon, whom Moses and the children of Israel smote, after they were come out of Egypt:
47 Ils prirent possession de son pays et du pays d'Og, roi de Basan, les deux rois des Amoréens, qui étaient au-delà du Jourdain, vers le soleil levant,
And they possessed his land, and the lande of Og King of Bashan, two Kings of the Amorites, which were on this side Iorden towarde the sunne rising:
48 depuis Arœr, qui est sur le bord de la vallée de l'Arnon, jusqu'à la montagne de Sion (appelée aussi Hermon),
From Aroer, which is by the banke of the riuer Arnon, euen vnto mount Sion, which is Hermon,
49 et toute la plaine au-delà du Jourdain, vers l'est, jusqu'à la mer de la plaine, sous les pentes du Pisga.
And all the plaine by Iorden Eastwarde, euen vnto the Sea, of ye plaine, vnder the springs of Pisgah.
