Deutéronome 19
1 Lorsque l'Éternel, ton Dieu, aura exterminé les nations dont l'Éternel, ton Dieu, te donne le pays, et que tu leur succéderas, que tu habiteras dans leurs villes et dans leurs maisons,
When the Lord thy God shall roote out the nations, whose lande the Lord thy God giueth thee, and thou shalt possesse them, and dwell in their cities, and in their houses,
2 tu te réserveras trois villes au milieu du pays dont l'Éternel, ton Dieu, te donne la possession.
Thou shalt separate three cities for thee in the middes of thy lande which the Lord thy God giueth thee to possesse it.
3 Vous préparerez le chemin, et vous diviserez en trois parties les limites du pays que l'Éternel, votre Dieu, vous donne en héritage, afin que tout homme meurtrier s'y réfugie.
Thou shalt prepare thee the way, and deuide the coastes of the land, which the Lord thy God giueth thee to inherite, into three parts, that euery manslayer may flee thither.
4 Voici le cas du tueur d'hommes qui s'y réfugiera et vivra: Celui qui tue son prochain sans le vouloir, et qui ne le haïssait pas dans le passé -
This also is ye cause wherfore the manslayer shall flee thither, and liue: who so killeth his neighbor ignorantly, and hated him not in time passed:
5 comme lorsqu'un homme va dans la forêt avec son voisin pour couper du bois et que sa main balance la hache pour abattre l'arbre, et que la tête glisse du manche et frappe son voisin de sorte qu'il meurt - celui-là s'enfuira dans l'une de ces villes et vivra.
As hee that goeth vnto the wood with his neighbor to hew wood, and his hand striketh with the axe to cut downe the tree, if the head slip from the helue, and hit his neighbour that he dieth, the same shall flee vnto one of the cities, and liue,
6 Sinon, le vengeur du sang pourrait poursuivre le meurtrier de l'homme pendant que la colère est dans son cœur et le rattraper, car le chemin est long, et le frapper mortellement, bien qu'il ne mérite pas la mort, parce qu'il ne l'a pas haï dans le passé.
Least the auenger of the blood follow after the manslayer, while his heart is chafed, and ouertake him, because the way is long, and slaie him, although he be not worthy of death, because he hated him not in time passed.
7 C'est pourquoi je vous ordonne de vous réserver trois villes.
Wherefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt appoint out three cities for thee.
8 Si l'Éternel, ton Dieu, élargit ton territoire, comme il l'a juré à tes pères, et te donne tout le pays qu'il a promis de donner à tes pères,
And when the Lord thy God enlargeth thy coastes (as he hath sworne vnto thy fathers) and giueth thee all the lande which he promised to giue vnto thy fathers,
9 et si tu gardes en pratique tout ce que je te commande aujourd'hui, d'aimer l'Éternel, ton Dieu, et de marcher toujours dans ses voies, alors tu ajouteras trois villes pour toi, en plus de ces trois-là.
(If thou keepe all these commandements to doe them, which I commaund thee this day: to wit, that thou loue the Lord thy God, and walke in his waies for euer) then shalt thou adde three cities moe for thee besides those three,
10 C'est afin que le sang innocent ne soit pas versé au milieu du pays que l'Éternel, ton Dieu, te donne en héritage, en laissant sur toi la culpabilité du sang.
That innocent bloude be not shed within thy land, which the Lord thy God giueth thee to inherite, lest bloud be vpon thee.
11 Mais si quelqu'un hait son prochain, le guette, se lève contre lui, le frappe mortellement et le fait mourir, et qu'il s'enfuit dans l'une de ces villes,
But if a man hate his neighbour, and lay waite for him, and rise against him, and smite any man that he die, and flee vnto any of these cities,
12 les anciens de sa ville l'y enverront et le livreront entre les mains du vengeur du sang, afin qu'il meure.
Then the Elders of his citie shall send and set him thence, and deliuer him into the hands of the auenger of the blood, that he may die.
13 Ton œil n'aura pas pitié de lui, mais tu purgeras le sang innocent d'Israël, afin que tout aille bien pour toi.
Thine eye shall not spare him, but thou shalt put away the crie of innocent blood from Israel, that it may goe well with thee.
14 Tu n'enlèveras pas le repère de ton prochain, qu'il a posé autrefois, dans l'héritage que tu auras, dans le pays que Yahvé ton Dieu te donne à posséder.
Thou shalt not remooue thy neighbours marke, which they of olde time haue set in thine inheritance, that thou shalt inherite in the lande, which ye Lord thy God giueth thee to possesse it.
15 Un seul témoin ne s'élèvera pas contre un homme pour une iniquité quelconque, ou pour un péché qu'il commet. C'est sur la bouche de deux témoins, ou sur la bouche de trois témoins, qu'une affaire sera établie.
One witnes shall not rise against a man for any trespasse, or for any sinne, or for any fault that hee offendeth in, but at the mouth of two witnesses or at the mouth of three witnesses shall the matter be stablished.
16 Si un témoin inique se lève contre un homme pour lui rendre témoignage d'une faute,
If a false witnesse rise vp against a man to accuse him of trespasse,
17 les deux hommes, entre lesquels il y a contestation, se tiendront devant Yahvé, devant les prêtres et les juges qui seront en ces jours-là;
Then both the men which striue together, shall stand before ye Lord, euen before the Priests and the Iudges, which shall be in those daies,
18 et les juges feront une enquête diligente; et voici, si le témoin est un faux témoin, et s'il a rendu un faux témoignage contre son frère,
And the Iudges shall make diligent inquisition: and if the witnesse be found false, and hath giuen false witnes against his brother,
19 alors vous lui ferez ce qu'il avait pensé faire à son frère. Ainsi vous éloignerez le mal du milieu de vous.
Then shall yee doe vnto him as hee had thought to doe vnto his brother: so thou shalt take euil away forth of the middes of thee.
20 Ceux qui resteront entendront et craindront, et ils ne commettront plus jamais un tel mal parmi vous.
And the rest shall heare this, and feare, and shall henceforth commit no more any such wickednes among you.
21 Vos yeux n'auront pas pitié: vie pour vie, œil pour œil, dent pour dent, main pour main, pied pour pied.
Therefore thine eye shall have no compassion, but life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foote for foote.
