Daniel 5
1 Le roi Belschatsar fit un grand festin à mille de ses seigneurs, et il but du vin en leur présence.
Baltasar the king made a great supper for his thousand nobles, and [there was] wine before the thousand.
2 Pendant qu'il buvait le vin, Belschatsar ordonna qu'on lui apportât les vases d'or et d'argent que Nabuchodonosor, son père, avait enlevés du temple de Jérusalem, afin que le roi et ses grands, ses femmes et ses concubines, en boivent.
And Baltasar drinking gave orders as he tasted the wine that they should bring the gold and silver vessels, which Nabuchodonosor his father had brought forth from the temple in Jerusalem; that the king, and his nobles, and his mistresses, and his concubines, should drink out of them.
3 On apporta les vases d'or qui avaient été pris dans le temple de la maison de Dieu à Jérusalem, et le roi et ses grands, ses femmes et ses concubines, en burent.
So the gold and silver vessels were brought which [Nabuchodonosor] had taken out of the temple of God in Jerusalem; and the king, and his nobles, and his mistresses, and his concubines, drank out of them.
4 Ils burent du vin, et louèrent les dieux d'or, d'argent, d'airain, de fer, de bois et de pierre.
They drank wine, and praised the gods of gold, and of silver, and of brass, and of iron, and of wood, and of stone.
5 A la même heure, les doigts de la main d'un homme sortirent et écrivirent près du chandelier, sur le plâtre du mur du palais du roi. Le roi vit la partie de la main qui écrivait.
In the same hour came forth fingers of a man's hand, and wrote in front of the lamp on the plaster of the wall of the king's house: and the king saw the knuckles of the hand that wrote.
6 Alors le visage du roi fut changé, et ses pensées le troublèrent; les articulations de ses cuisses se relâchèrent, et ses genoux se heurtèrent l'un contre l'autre.
Then the king's countenance changed, and his thoughts troubled him, and the joints of his loins were loosed, and his knees struck one another.
7 Le roi cria à haute voix de faire venir les enchanteurs, les Chaldéens et les devins. Le roi prit la parole et dit aux sages de Babylone: « Celui qui lira cet écrit et m'en montrera l'interprétation sera vêtu de pourpre, aura une chaîne d'or au cou, et sera le troisième chef du royaume. »
And the king cried aloud to bring in the magicians, Chaldeans, [and] soothsayers; and he said to the wise men of Babylon, Whosoever shall read this writing, and make known to me the interpretation, shall be clothed with scarlet, and [there shall be] a golden chain upon his neck, and he shall be the third ruler in my kingdom.
8 Alors tous les sages du roi entrèrent; mais ils ne purent lire l'écriture, et ne purent faire connaître au roi l'interprétation.
Then came in all the king's wise men: but they could not read the writing, nor make known the interpretation to the king.
9 Alors le roi Belschatsar fut grandement troublé, et son visage fut changé en lui, et ses seigneurs furent perplexes.
And king Baltasar was troubled, and his countenance changed upon him, and his nobles were troubled with him.
10 La reine, à cause des paroles du roi et de ses seigneurs, entra dans la maison du banquet. La reine prit la parole et dit: « O roi, vis à jamais; que tes pensées ne te troublent pas, et que ton visage ne change pas.
Then the queen came into the banquet house, and said, O king, live for ever: let not your thoughts trouble you, and let not your countenance be changed.
11 Il y a dans ton royaume un homme dans lequel se trouve l'esprit des dieux saints; aux jours de ton père, on trouvait en lui la lumière, l'intelligence et la sagesse, comme la sagesse des dieux. Le roi Nebucadnetsar, ton père - oui, le roi, ton père - l'a établi maître des magiciens, des enchanteurs, des Chaldéens et des devins,
There is a man in your kingdom, in whom is the Spirit of God; and in the days of your father watchfulness and understanding were found in him; and king Nabuchodonosor your father made him chief of the enchanters, magicians, Chaldeans, [and] soothsayers.
12 parce qu'un esprit excellent, de la connaissance, de l'intelligence, l'interprétation des songes, la révélation des phrases obscures et la dissolution des doutes se trouvaient dans le même Daniel, que le roi a appelé Beltschatsar. Qu'on appelle maintenant Daniel, et il donnera l'interprétation. »
For [there is] an excellent spirit in him, and sense and understanding in him, interpreting dreams [as he does], and answering hard [questions], and solving difficulties: [it is] Daniel, and the king gave him the name of Baltasar: now then let him be called, and he shall tell you the interpretation of the writing.
13 Alors Daniel fut amené devant le roi. Le roi prit la parole et dit à Daniel: « Es-tu ce Daniel des fils de la captivité de Juda, que le roi mon père a fait sortir de Juda?
Then Daniel was brought in before the king: and the king said to Daniel, Are you Daniel, of the children of the captivity of Judea, which the king my father brought?
14 J'ai entendu dire de toi que l'esprit des dieux est en toi et que la lumière, l'intelligence et une excellente sagesse se trouvent en toi.
I have heard concerning you, that the Spirit of God is in you, and [that] watchfulness and understanding and excellent wisdom have been found in you.
15 Or, on a fait venir devant moi les sages, les enchanteurs, pour qu'ils lisent cette écriture et m'en donnent l'interprétation; mais ils n'ont pas pu donner l'interprétation de la chose.
And now, the wise men, magicians, [and] soothsayers, have come in before me, to read the writing, and make known to me the interpretation: but they could not tell it me.
16 Mais j'ai entendu dire de toi que tu peux donner des interprétations et dissiper les doutes. Maintenant, si tu peux lire l'écriture et me faire connaître son interprétation, tu seras vêtu de pourpre, tu auras une chaîne d'or à ton cou, et tu seras le troisième chef du royaume. »
And I have heard concerning you, that you are able to make interpretations: now then if you shall be able to read the writing, and to make known to me the interpretation of it, you shall be clothed with purple, and there shall be a golden chain upon your neck, and you shall be third ruler in my kingdom.
17 Alors Daniel prit la parole devant le roi: « Que tes dons soient pour toi, et que tes récompenses soient pour un autre. Néanmoins, je lirai l'écriture au roi, et je lui ferai connaître l'interprétation.
And Daniel said, before the king, Let your gifts be to yourself, and give the present of your house to another; but I will read the writing, and will make known to you the interpretation of it.
18 « A toi, roi, le Dieu Très-Haut a donné à Nabuchodonosor, ton père, le royaume, la grandeur, la gloire et la magnificence.
O king, the most high God gave to your father Nabuchodonosor a kingdom, and majesty, and honour, and glory:
19 A cause de la grandeur qu'il lui a donnée, tous les peuples, toutes les nations et toutes les langues ont tremblé et ont eu peur devant lui. Il tuait qui il voulait, et il faisait vivre qui il voulait. Il élevait qui il voulait, et il abaissait qui il voulait.
and by reason of the majesty which he gave to him, all nations, tribes, [and] languages trembled and feared before him: whom he would he killed; and whom he would he struck; and whom he would he exalted; and whom he would he abased.
20 Mais comme son cœur s'élevait et que son esprit s'endurcissait au point de s'enorgueillir, il fut déchu de son trône royal, et on lui ôta sa gloire.
But when his heart was lifted up, and his spirit was emboldened to act proudly, he was deposed from his royal throne, and [his] honour was taken from him.
21 Il fut chassé des fils de l'homme, et son cœur devint semblable à celui des animaux, et sa demeure fut avec les ânes sauvages. Il était nourri d'herbe comme les bœufs, et son corps était mouillé de la rosée du ciel, jusqu'à ce qu'il sache que le Dieu Très-Haut règne sur le royaume des hommes, et qu'il y établit qui il veut.
And he was driven forth from men; and his heart was given him after the nature of wild beasts, and his dwelling was with the wild asses; and they fed him with grass as an ox, and his body was bathed with the dew of heaven; until he knew that the most high God is Lord of the kingdom of men, and will give it to whoever he shall please.
22 « Toi, son fils Belschatsar, tu n'as pas humilié ton cœur, bien que tu aies su tout cela,
And you accordingly, his son, O Baltasar, has not humbled your heart before God: know you not all this?
23 mais tu t'es élevé contre le Seigneur des cieux; on a apporté devant toi les vases de sa maison, et toi et tes grands, tes femmes et tes concubines, vous en avez bu le vin. Tu as loué les dieux d'argent et d'or, d'airain, de fer, de bois et de pierre, qui ne voient pas, n'entendent pas et ne savent pas; et tu n'as pas glorifié le Dieu dans la main duquel est ton souffle, et dans la main duquel sont toutes tes voies.
And you has been exalted against the Lord God of heaven; and they have brought before you the vessels of his house, and you, and your nobles, and your mistresses, and your concubines, have drunk wine out of them; and you has praised the gods of gold, and silver, and brass, and iron, and wood, and stone, which see not, and which hear not, and know not: and the God in whose hand are your breath, and all your ways has you not glorified.
24 Alors la partie de la main fut envoyée de devant lui, et cette écriture fut inscrite.
Therefore from his presence has been sent forth the knuckle of a hand; and he has ordered the writing.
25 « Voici l'écriture qui a été inscrite: « MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN.
And this is the ordered writing, Mane, Thekel, Phares.
26 « Voici l'interprétation de la chose: MENE: Dieu a compté votre royaume, et y a mis fin.
This is the interpretation of the sentence: Mane; God has measured your kingdom, and finished it.
27 TEKEL: vous êtes pesés dans la balance, et vous êtes trouvés déficients.
Thekel; it has been weighed in the balance, and found lacking.
28 PERES: votre royaume est divisé et donné aux Mèdes et aux Perses. »
Phares; your kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians.
29 Belschatsar ordonna qu'on habille Daniel de pourpre, qu'on lui mette au cou un collier d'or et qu'on annonce qu'il sera le troisième chef du royaume.
Then Baltasar commanded, and they clothed Daniel with scarlet, and put the golden chain about his neck, and proclaimed concerning him that he was the third ruler in the kingdom.
30 Cette nuit-là, Belschatsar, roi des Chaldéens, fut tué.
In the same night was Baltasar the Chaldean king slain.
31 Darius le Mède reçut le royaume, âgé d'environ soixante-deux ans.
And Darius the Mede succeeded to the kingdom, being sixty-two years [old].
