Daniel 1
1 La troisième année du règne de Jojakim, roi de Juda, Nebucadnetsar, roi de Babylone, vint à Jérusalem et l'assiégea.
During the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, attacked Jerusalem and surrounded it.
2 L'Éternel livra entre ses mains Jehoïakim, roi de Juda, avec une partie des ustensiles de la maison de Dieu, et il les transporta au pays de Schinear, dans la maison de son dieu. Il apporta les ustensiles dans la maison du trésor de son dieu.
The Lord allowed him to defeat King Jehoiakim, and also to remove some of the objects used in the Temple of God. He took them back to Babylon, to the house of his god, placing them in the treasury of his god.
3 Le roi parla à Ashpenaz, maître de ses eunuques, pour qu'il fasse venir quelques-uns des enfants d'Israël, de la descendance royale et des nobles:
Then the king ordered Ashpenaz, his chief eunuch, to take charge of some of the captured Israelites from the royal and noble families,
4 des jeunes gens qui n'avaient pas de défaut, mais qui étaient de bonne constitution, habiles en toute sagesse, doués de savoir, comprenant la science, et qui étaient capables de se tenir dans le palais du roi; et qu'il leur enseignât le savoir et la langue des Chaldéens.
“They are to be young men without any physical defect who are good-looking,” he said. “They must be well-educated, quick to learn, have good insight, and be well able to serve in the king's palace and be taught the literature and language of Babylon.”
5 Le roi leur donna une portion quotidienne des mets du roi et du vin qu'il buvait, et leur imposa une nourriture de trois ans, à l'issue de laquelle ils se présenteraient devant le roi.
The king also provided them with a daily allowance of the same kind of rich food and wine he was served. At the end of their three years of education they would enter the king's service.
6 Or, parmi ces enfants de Juda, il y avait Daniel, Hanania, Mishaël et Azaria.
Among those chosen were Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, from the tribe of Judah.
7 Le prince des eunuques leur donna des noms: à Daniel, il donna le nom de Beltschatsar; à Hanania, celui de Shadrac; à Mishael, celui de Meshach; et à Azaria, celui d'Abednego.
The chief eunuch gave them new names: Daniel he called Belteshazzar, Hananiah he called Shadrach, Mishael he called Meshach, and Azariah he called Abednego.
8 Mais Daniel résolut dans son cœur de ne pas se souiller avec les mets du roi et avec le vin qu'il buvait. Il demanda donc au prince des eunuques de ne pas se souiller.
However, Daniel made up his mind not to make himself impure by eating the king's rich food and wine. He asked the chief eunuch to allow him not to make himself impure.
9 Dieu fit en sorte que Daniel trouve de la bonté et de la compassion aux yeux du prince des eunuques.
God had helped Daniel to be viewed with kindness and sympathy by the chief eunuch.
10 Le prince des eunuques dit à Daniel: « Je crains mon seigneur le roi, qui a fixé votre nourriture et votre boisson. Car pourquoi verrait-il vos visages plus mauvais que ceux des jeunes gens de votre âge? Vous mettriez alors ma tête en danger auprès du roi. »
But the chief eunuch told Daniel, “I'm afraid of what my lord the king would do to me. He's the one who decided what you should eat and drink. What if he were to see you looking pale and sickly compared to the other young men of your age. Because of you the king would have my head!”
11 Alors Daniel dit à l'intendant que le prince des eunuques avait nommé sur Daniel, Hanania, Mischaël et Azaria:
Daniel then spoke with the guard that the chief eunuch had put in charge of Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah.
12 « Mets tes serviteurs à l'épreuve, je t'en prie, pendant dix jours; qu'ils nous donnent des légumes à manger et de l'eau à boire.
“Please put us, your servants, to the test and just give us vegetables to eat and water to drink for ten days,” Daniel told him.
13 Puis, que l'on examine devant toi notre visage et celui des jeunes gens qui mangent les mets du roi; et selon ce que tu verras, traite tes serviteurs. »
“After that, compare us with those young men who ate the king's rich food. Then decide on the basis of what you see.”
14 Il les écouta donc à ce sujet et les mit à l'épreuve pendant dix jours.
The guard agreed to the proposal they made and tested them for ten days.
15 Au bout de dix jours, leur visage était plus beau et ils étaient plus gras que tous les jeunes gens qui avaient mangé les mets du roi.
When the ten days were up they looked healthier and better fed than all the young men who had eaten the king's rich food.
16 L'intendant enleva leurs mets et le vin qu'on leur avait donné à boire, et leur donna des légumes.
After that the guard didn't give them the rich food and wine, just vegetables.
17 Quant à ces quatre jeunes gens, Dieu leur donna de la connaissance et de l'habileté dans toute l'instruction et la sagesse; et Daniel eut l'intelligence de toutes les visions et de tous les songes.
God gave these four young men the ability to learn and understand in all areas of literature and knowledge, while Daniel was also given the gift of interpreting all kinds of visions and dreams.
18 A la fin des jours que le roi avait fixés pour les faire venir, le prince des eunuques les fit venir devant Nebucadnetsar.
When their time of education ordered by the king was over, the chief eunuch brought all the young men before King Nebuchadnezzar.
19 Le roi s'entretint avec eux, et il ne se trouva parmi eux personne comme Daniel, Hanania, Mishaël et Azaria. Ils se tinrent donc devant le roi.
The king talked with them and none could compare with Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. So they entered the king's service.
20 Pour toutes les questions de sagesse et d'intelligence que le roi leur posa, il les trouva dix fois meilleurs que tous les magiciens et enchanteurs qui étaient dans tout son royaume.
Whatever subject the king asked them about, everything that required wisdom of understanding, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters in his whole kingdom.
21 Daniel a continué jusqu'à la première année du roi Cyrus.
Daniel remained in this position until the first year of King Cyrus' reign.
