Actes 25
1 Festus, étant arrivé dans la province, monta de Césarée à Jérusalem au bout de trois jours.
Now when Festus had come into the province, after three days he ascended from Cesarea to Jerusalem.
2 Alors le grand prêtre et les principaux hommes des Juifs lui donnèrent des informations contre Paul, et ils le supplièrent,
Then the high priest and the chief of the Jews informed him against Paul, and besought him,
3 en lui demandant une faveur, de le convoquer à Jérusalem, complotant de le tuer en chemin.
And desired favor against him, that he would send for him to Jerusalem, laying wait in the way to kill him.
4 Mais Festus répondit que Paul devait être gardé en détention à Césarée, et que lui-même allait bientôt partir.
But Festus answered, that Paul should be kept at Cesarea, and that he himself would depart shortly [thither].
5 « Que ceux qui ont du pouvoir parmi vous, dit-il, descendent donc avec moi, et s'il y a quelque chose de mauvais dans cet homme, qu'ils l'accusent. »
Let them therefore, said he, who among you are able, go down with [me], and accuse this man, if there is any wickedness in him.
6 Après avoir passé plus de dix jours au milieu d'eux, il descendit à Césarée, et, le lendemain, il s'assit sur le tribunal, et ordonna qu'on amenât Paul.
And when he had tarried among them more than ten days, he went down to Cesarea; and the next day sitting on the judgment-seat, commanded Paul to be brought.
7 Lorsqu'il fut amené, les Juifs qui étaient descendus de Jérusalem se tinrent autour de lui, portant contre lui des accusations nombreuses et graves qu'ils ne pouvaient prouver,
And when he had come, the Jews who came down from Jerusalem stood around, and laid many and grievous complaints against Paul, which they could not prove;
8 tandis qu'il disait pour sa défense: « Je n'ai commis aucun péché, ni contre la loi des Juifs, ni contre le temple, ni contre César. »
While he answered for himself, Neither against the law of the Jews, neither against the temple, nor yet against Cesar have I committed any offense.
9 Mais Festus, désireux de gagner la faveur des Juifs, prit la parole et dit à Paul: « Veux-tu monter à Jérusalem et y être jugé par moi au sujet de ces choses? »
But Festus, willing to do the Jews a pleasure, answered Paul, and said, Wilt thou go to Jerusalem, and there be judged concerning these things before me?
10 Mais Paul répondit: « Je me tiens devant le tribunal de César, où je dois être jugé. Je n'ai rien fait de mal aux Juifs, comme vous le savez aussi très bien.
Then said Paul, I stand at Cesar's tribunal, where I ought to be judged: to the Jews have I done no wrong, as thou very well knowest.
11 En effet, si j'ai commis une faute et quelque chose qui mérite la mort, je ne refuse pas de mourir; mais si aucune de ces choses dont ils m'accusent n'est vraie, personne ne peut me livrer à eux. J'en appelle à César! »
For if I am an offender, or have committed any thing worthy of death, I refuse not to die: but if there is none of these things of which these accuse me, no man may deliver me to them. I appeal to Cesar.
12 Alors Festus, après avoir consulté le conseil, prit la parole et dit: « Tu as fait appel à César. C'est à César que tu iras. »
Then Festus, when he had conferred with the council, answered, Hast thou appealed to Cesar? to Cesar thou shalt go.
13 Quelques jours après, le roi Agrippa et Bérénice arrivèrent à Césarée et saluèrent Festus.
And after certain days, king Agrippa and Bernice came to Cesarea, to salute Festus.
14 Comme il restait là plusieurs jours, Festus exposa au roi la cause de Paul, en disant: Il y a un homme que Félix a laissé prisonnier,
And when they had been there many days, Festus declared Paul's cause to the king, saying, There is a certain man left in bonds by Felix:
15 et au sujet duquel, lorsque j'étais à Jérusalem, les principaux sacrificateurs et les anciens des Juifs m'ont informé, en demandant une sentence contre lui.
About whom, when I was at Jerusalem, the chief priests and the elders of the Jews informed [me], desiring [to have] judgment against him.
16 Je leur ai répondu que ce n'est pas la coutume des Romains de livrer un homme à la mort avant que l'accusé ait rencontré ses accusateurs et ait eu l'occasion de se défendre sur ce qui lui est reproché.
To whom I answered, It is not the manner of the Romans to deliver any man to die, before he who is accused hath the accusers face to face, and hath license to answer for himself concerning the crime laid against him.
17 Lorsqu'ils se sont donc rassemblés ici, je n'ai pas tardé, mais le lendemain, je me suis assis sur le siège du tribunal et j'ai ordonné que l'homme soit amené.
Therefore, when they had come hither, without any delay on the morrow I sat on the judgment-seat, and commanded the man to be brought forth;
18 Les accusateurs, s'étant levés, ne l'accusèrent pas des choses que j'avais supposées,
Against whom, when the accusers stood up, they brought no accusation of such things as I supposed:
19 mais ils lui posèrent des questions sur leur propre religion et sur un certain Jésus, mort, que Paul a déclaré être vivant.
But had certain questions against him of their own superstition, and of one Jesus who was dead, whom Paul affirmed to be alive.
20 Ne sachant comment m'informer de ces choses, je lui demandai s'il voulait aller à Jérusalem et y être jugé à ce sujet.
And because I doubted of such manner of questions, I asked [him] whether he would go to Jerusalem, and there be judged concerning these matters.
21 Mais Paul ayant demandé qu'on le garde pour le jugement de l'empereur, j'ai ordonné qu'on le garde jusqu'à ce que je puisse l'envoyer à César. »
But when Paul had appealed to be reserved to the hearing of Augustus, I commanded him to be kept till I might send him to Cesar.
22 Agrippa dit à Festus: « Je voudrais aussi l'entendre moi-même. » « Demain, » a-t-il dit, « vous l'entendrez. »
Then Agrippa said to Festus, I would also hear the man myself. To-morrow, said he, thou shalt hear him.
23 Le lendemain, Agrippa et Bérénice étant venus en grande pompe, et étant entrés dans le lieu d'audience avec les commandants et les principaux de la ville, sur l'ordre de Festus, on fit entrer Paul.
And on the morrow, when Agrippa had come, and Bernice, with great pomp, and had entered into the place of hearing, with the chief captains and principal men of the city, at the command of Festus Paul was brought forth.
24 Festus dit: « Roi Agrippa, et tous ceux qui sont ici présents avec nous, vous voyez cet homme au sujet duquel toute la multitude des Juifs m'a adressé des supplications, tant à Jérusalem qu'ici, en disant qu'il ne devait plus vivre.
And Festus said, King Agrippa, and all men who are here present with us, ye see this man about whom all the multitude of the Jews have dealt with me, both at Jerusalem, and [also] here, crying that he ought not to live any longer.
25 Mais comme j'ai constaté qu'il n'avait rien commis qui mérite la mort, et comme il en a appelé lui-même à l'empereur, j'ai décidé de l'envoyer,
But when I found that he had committed nothing worthy of death, and that he himself hath appealed to Augustus, I have determined to send him.
26 lui dont je n'ai rien de certain à écrire à mon seigneur. C'est pourquoi je l'ai fait venir devant vous, et surtout devant vous, roi Agrippa, afin que, après examen, j'aie quelque chose à écrire.
Of whom I have no certain thing to write to my lord. Wherefore I have brought him forth before you, and specially before thee, O king Agrippa, that after examination had, I may have somewhat to write.
27 Car il me semble déraisonnable, en envoyant un prisonnier, de ne pas préciser aussi les charges qui pèsent sur lui. »
For it seemeth to me unreasonable to send a prisoner, and not also to signify the crimes [laid] against him.
