Actes 22
1 « Frères et pères, écoutez la défense que je vous fais maintenant. »
Brethren and fathers, hear ye the defence which I now make unto you.
2 Lorsqu'ils entendirent qu'il leur parlait en langue hébraïque, ils furent encore plus silencieux. Il dit:
And when they heard that he spake unto them in the Hebrew language, they were the more quiet: and he saith,
3 « Je suis vraiment Juif, né à Tarse en Cilicie, mais élevé dans cette ville aux pieds de Gamaliel, instruit selon la stricte tradition de la loi de nos pères, zélé pour Dieu, comme vous l'êtes tous aujourd'hui.
I am a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city, at the feet of Gamaliel, instructed according to the strict manner of the law of our fathers, being zealous for God, even as ye all are this day:
4 J'ai persécuté cette voie jusqu'à la mort, liant et livrant en prison hommes et femmes,
and I persecuted this Way unto the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women.
5 comme en témoignent le souverain sacrificateur et tout le conseil des anciens, de qui j'ai aussi reçu des lettres pour les frères, et je me suis rendu à Damas pour amener à Jérusalem ceux qui s'y trouvaient, liés pour être punis.
As also the high priest doth bear me witness, and all the estate of the elders: from whom also I received letters unto the brethren, and journeyed to Damascus, to bring them also which were there unto Jerusalem in bonds, for to be punished.
6 « Comme je faisais route et que j'approchais de Damas, vers midi, une grande lumière jaillit soudain du ciel autour de moi.
And it came to pass, that, as I made my journey, and drew nigh unto Damascus, about noon, suddenly there shone from heaven a great light round about me.
7 Je tombai à terre et j'entendis une voix qui me disait: « Saul, Saul, pourquoi me persécutes-tu? »
And I fell unto the ground, and heard a voice saying unto me, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?
8 Je répondis: « Qui es-tu, Seigneur? » Il me dit: « Je suis Jésus de Nazareth, que tu persécutes.
And I answered, Who art thou, Lord? And he said unto me, I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom thou persecutest.
9 Ceux qui étaient avec moi virent la lumière et eurent peur, mais ils ne comprirent pas la voix de celui qui me parlait.
And they that were with me beheld indeed the light, but they heard not the voice of him that spake to me.
10 Je disais: Que dois-je faire, Seigneur? Le Seigneur me répondit: 'Lève-toi, et va à Damas. Là, tu seras informé de tout ce qui t'est prescrit.
And I said, What shall I do, Lord? And the Lord said unto me, Arise, and go into Damascus; and there it shall be told thee of all things which are appointed for thee to do.
11 Comme je ne pouvais pas voir à cause de la gloire de cette lumière, étant conduit par la main de ceux qui étaient avec moi, j'entrai dans Damas.
And when I could not see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of them that were with me, I came into Damascus.
12 Un certain Ananias, homme pieux selon la loi, bien connu de tous les Juifs qui habitaient Damas,
And one Ananias, a devout man according to the law, well reported of by all the Jews that dwelt there,
13 vint vers moi, et, se tenant près de moi, il me dit: « Frère Saul, recouvre la vue. A l'heure même, je levai les yeux vers lui.
came unto me, and standing by me said unto me, Brother Saul, receive thy sight. And in that very hour I looked up on him.
14 Il dit: « Le Dieu de nos pères t'a destiné à connaître sa volonté, à voir le Juste et à entendre la voix de sa bouche.
And he said, The God of our fathers hath appointed thee to know his will, and to see the Righteous One, and to hear a voice from his mouth.
15 Car tu seras pour lui le témoin devant tous les hommes de ce que tu as vu et entendu.
For thou shalt be a witness for him unto all men of what thou hast seen and heard.
16 Maintenant, pourquoi attendez-vous? Lève-toi, sois baptisé, et lave-toi de tes péchés, en invoquant le nom du Seigneur'.
And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on his name.
17 « Lorsque je fus de retour à Jérusalem et que je priais dans le temple, je tombai en transe
And it came to pass, that, when I had returned to Jerusalem, and while I prayed in the temple, I fell into a trance,
18 et je le vis qui me disait: « Dépêche-toi de sortir de Jérusalem, car ils ne veulent pas recevoir de toi le témoignage qui me concerne.
and saw him saying unto me, Make haste, and get thee quickly out of Jerusalem: because they will not receive of thee testimony concerning me.
19 Je lui répondis: « Seigneur, ils savent eux-mêmes que j'ai emprisonné et battu dans toutes les synagogues ceux qui croyaient en toi.
And I said, Lord, they themselves know that I imprisoned and beat in every synagogue them that believed on thee:
20 Et quand le sang d'Étienne, ton témoin, a été versé, j'étais là, moi aussi, à consentir à sa mort et à garder les manteaux de ceux qui l'ont tué.
and when the blood of Stephen thy witness was shed, I also was standing by, and consenting, and keeping the garments of them that slew him.
21 « Il me dit: 'Va-t'en, car je t'enverrai loin d'ici vers les païens'. »
And he said unto me, Depart: for I will send thee forth far hence unto the Gentiles.
22 Ils l'ont écouté jusqu'à ce qu'il dise cela, puis ils ont élevé la voix et ont dit: « Débarrassez la terre de cet homme, car il n'est pas digne de vivre. »
And they gave him audience unto this word; and they lifted up their voice, and said, Away with such a fellow from the earth: for it is not fit that he should live.
23 Comme ils poussaient des cris, jetaient leurs manteaux et lançaient de la poussière en l'air,
And as they cried out, and threw off their garments, and cast dust into the air,
24 le tribun ordonna de le faire entrer dans la caserne, et de le faire examiner par la flagellation, afin de savoir pour quel crime ils criaient ainsi contre lui.
the chief captain commanded him to be brought into the castle, bidding that he should be examined by scourging, that he might know for what cause they so shouted against him.
25 Lorsqu'ils l'eurent attaché avec des lanières, Paul demanda au centurion qui se tenait là: « Vous est-il permis de flageller un homme qui est romain et qui n'a pas été déclaré coupable? »
And when they had tied him up with the thongs, Paul said unto the centurion that stood by, Is it lawful for you to scourge a man that is a Roman, and uncondemned?
26 Le centurion, ayant entendu cela, alla trouver le commandant et lui dit: « Fais attention à ce que tu vas faire, car cet homme est un Romain! »
And when the centurion heard it, he went to the chief captain, and told him, saying, What art thou about to do? for this man is a Roman.
27 Le commandant vint et lui demanda: « Dis-moi, es-tu un Romain? » Il a dit: « Oui. »
And the chief captain came, and said unto him, Tell me, art thou a Roman? And he said, Yea.
28 Le commandant répondit: « J'ai acheté ma citoyenneté à un grand prix. » Paul a dit: « Mais je suis né romain. »
And the chief captain answered, With a great sum obtained I this citizenship. And Paul said, But I am [a Roman] born.
29 Aussitôt, ceux qui allaient l'interroger s'éloignèrent de lui, et le tribun eut aussi peur lorsqu'il s'aperçut que c'était un Romain, car il l'avait fait lier.
They then which were about to examine him straightway departed from him: and the chief captain also was afraid, when he knew that he was a Roman, and because he had bound him.
30 Mais le lendemain, désireux de connaître la vérité sur les raisons pour lesquelles il était accusé par les Juifs, il le libéra des liens et ordonna aux chefs des prêtres et à tout le conseil de se réunir, de faire descendre Paul et de le faire comparaître devant eux.
But on the morrow, desiring to know the certainty, wherefore he was accused of the Jews, he loosed him, and commanded the chief priests and all the council to come together, and brought Paul down, and set him before them.
