Actes 19
1 Pendant qu'Apollos était à Corinthe, Paul, ayant traversé le haut pays, arriva à Éphèse, où il trouva quelques disciples.
And it came to pass, while Apollos was in Corinth, Paul having come through the upper regions came down into Ephesus: and found certain disciples,
2 Il leur dit: « Avez-vous reçu le Saint-Esprit quand vous avez cru? » Ils lui ont dit: « Non, nous n'avons même pas entendu dire qu'il y avait un Saint-Esprit. »
and said to them, Have you received the Holy Ghost, having believed? And they said to him, But we have not heard if the Holy Ghost is (given).
3 Il dit: « Dans quoi donc as-tu été baptisé? » Ils ont dit: « Au baptême de Jean. »
And he said, Into what then were you baptized? And they said, Into the baptism of John.
4 Paul dit: « Jean a en effet baptisé d'un baptême de repentance, en disant au peuple qu'il devait croire en celui qui viendrait après lui, c'est-à-dire en Jésus-Christ. »
And Paul said, John baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on the one coming after him, that is Jesus.
5 Après avoir entendu cela, ils furent baptisés au nom du Seigneur Jésus.
And they, having heard, were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus;
6 Lorsque Paul leur eut imposé les mains, le Saint-Esprit vint sur eux, et ils parlèrent d'autres langues et prophétisèrent.
and Paul having laid his hands on them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they continued to speak with tongues, and prophesy.
7 Ils étaient environ douze hommes en tout.
And they were all about twelve men.
8 Il entra dans la synagogue et, pendant trois mois, il parla avec assurance, raisonnant et persuadant sur les choses qui concernent le royaume de Dieu.
And having come into the synagogue, he preached boldly three months, expounding and persuading them as to the things concerning the kingdom of God.
9 Mais, comme quelques-uns étaient endurcis et désobéissants, parlant mal de la Voie devant la foule, il se sépara d'eux et sépara les disciples, raisonnant chaque jour dans l'école de Tyrannus.
But when some were becoming hardened and disbelieving, speaking evil of the way in the presence of the multitude, departing from them he separated his disciples, daily expounding in the school of Tyrannus.
10 Cela dura deux ans, de sorte que tous ceux qui habitaient l'Asie entendirent la parole du Seigneur Jésus, tant Juifs que Grecs.
And this took place two years; so that all dwelling in Asia heard the word of the Lord, both Jews and Greeks.
11 Dieu opérait des miracles particuliers par les mains de Paul,
And God was working great miracles through the hands of Paul;
12 de sorte que même des mouchoirs ou des tabliers étaient portés de son corps aux malades, et les maladies se retiraient d'eux, et les mauvais esprits sortaient.
so that napkins and aprons were carried from his body and placed on the sick, and diseases departed from them, and evil spirits went out of them.
13 Mais quelques Juifs itinérants, exorcistes, se chargèrent d'invoquer sur ceux qui avaient les mauvais esprits le nom du Seigneur Jésus, en disant: « Nous vous adjurons par Jésus que Paul prêche. »
And certain ones of the itinerant Jewish exorcists undertook to call the name of the Lord Jesus, over those having evil spirits saying, I adjure you in the name of Jesus whom Paul is preaching.
14 Il y avait sept fils d'un certain Scéva, un grand prêtre juif, qui faisaient cela.
And there were certain seven sons of one Sceva, a Jewish high priest, doing this.
15 L'esprit mauvais répondit: « Je connais Jésus et je connais Paul, mais toi, qui es-tu? »
But the evil spirit responding said to them, I know Jesus, and am acquainted with Paul; but who are you?
16 L'homme en qui était l'esprit malin sauta sur eux, les maîtrisa et l'emporta sur eux, de sorte qu'ils s'enfuirent de cette maison, nus et blessés.
And the man in whom was the evil spirit, leaping on them, domineering over both of them, prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.
17 Cela fut connu de tous les habitants d'Éphèse, Juifs et Grecs. La crainte s'empara d'eux tous, et le nom du Seigneur Jésus fut glorifié.
And this became known to all, both Jews and Greeks, dwelling at Ephesus; and fear fell upon them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified;
18 Beaucoup de ceux qui avaient cru vinrent aussi, confessant et déclarant leurs œuvres.
and many of those having believed came, confessing, and renouncing their practices.
19 Plusieurs de ceux qui pratiquaient les arts magiques réunirent leurs livres et les brûlèrent aux yeux de tous. Ils en comptèrent le prix, qui s'élevait à cinquante mille pièces d'argent.
And many of those practicing curious arts, having brought their books, burnt them before all: and they estimated the price of them, and found it to be fifty thousand pieces of silver.
20 Ainsi, la parole du Seigneur se répandait et devenait puissante.
Thus the word of the Lord increased and accumulated strength according to His power.
21 Or, après que ces choses eurent pris fin, Paul résolut par l'Esprit, après avoir traversé la Macédoine et l'Achaïe, d'aller à Jérusalem, en disant: « Après y avoir été, il faut aussi que je voie Rome. »
And when these things were fulfilled, Paul purposed in spirit, having traveled through Macedonia and Achaia, to go on into Jerusalem, saying that, After I am there it behooves me also to see Rome.
22 Ayant envoyé en Macédoine deux de ceux qui le servaient, Timothée et Éraste, il resta lui-même quelque temps en Asie.
And having sent two of those ministering to him, Timothy and Erastus, into Macedonia, himself spent the time in Asia.
23 Vers ce temps-là, il se produisit une grande agitation au sujet de la voie.
And at that time there was no small commotion concerning the way.
24 En effet, un homme du nom de Démétrius, orfèvre qui fabriquait des statues d'argent d'Artémis, apporta une petite affaire aux artisans,
For a certain Demetrius by name, a silversmith, making silver shrines of Diana, was bringing no small gain to the mechanics,
25 qu'il rassembla avec les ouvriers de même profession, et dit: « Messieurs, vous savez que c'est par ce commerce que nous sommes riches.
whom having assembled and the laborers about such things, he said, Men, you know that it is from this work that prosperity is to us:
26 Vous voyez et vous entendez que ce n'est pas seulement à Éphèse, mais dans presque toute l'Asie, que ce Paul a persuadé et détourné beaucoup de gens, en disant que les dieux faits de main d'homme ne sont pas des dieux.
and you see and hear, that not only at Ephesus, but almost throughout all Asia, that this Paul having persuaded them has turned away a great multitude, saying that there are no gods made with hands.
27 Non seulement notre commerce risque d'être discrédité, mais encore le temple de la grande déesse Artémis, que toute l'Asie et le monde entier vénèrent, risque d'être compté pour rien et sa majesté détruite. »
And not only is this interest in danger to us to come into disrepute; but even the temple of the great goddess Diana to be considered for nought, and they are about even to despise the majesty of her, whom all Asia and the world worships.
28 En entendant cela, ils furent remplis de colère et s'écrièrent: « Grande est Artémis des Éphésiens! »
And hearing and being filled with rage, they continued to cry out, saying, Great is Diana of the Ephesians.
29 Toute la ville fut remplie de confusion, et ils se précipitèrent tous ensemble dans le théâtre, après s'être emparés de Gaius et d'Aristarque, hommes de Macédoine, compagnons de voyage de Paul.
And the city was filled with commotion: and they rushed of one accord into the theatre, seizing Gaius and Aristarchus, the Macedonians, the companions of Paul.
30 Lorsque Paul voulut entrer parmi le peuple, les disciples ne le lui permirent pas.
And Paul wishing to go in unto the people, the disciples suffered him not;
31 Quelques-uns des Asiarques, qui étaient ses amis, lui envoyèrent une lettre pour le prier de ne pas s'aventurer sur le théâtre.
and certain ones of the Asiatic rulers, also being friends to him, having sent to him, continued to entreat him not to give himself up into the theatre.
32 Les uns criaient donc une chose, les autres une autre, car l'assemblée était dans la confusion. La plupart d'entre eux ne savaient pas pourquoi ils s'étaient réunis.
Then indeed they continued to cry out some one thing, and some another: for the church was confused; and the most of them did not know on account of what they had come together.
33 On fit sortir Alexandre du milieu de la foule, les Juifs l'ayant fait avancer. Alexandre leur fit signe de la main, et il aurait voulu prendre la parole devant le peuple.
And some from the crowd forced in Alexander, the Jews precipitating him forward; and Alexander, beckoning with his hand, wished to apologize to the people.
34 Mais lorsqu'ils s'aperçurent qu'il était juif, tous, d'une seule voix et pendant environ deux heures, s'écrièrent: « Grande est Artémis des Éphésiens! »
But recognizing that he is a Jew, there was one voice from all crying out about two hours, Great is Diana of the Ephesians.
35 Lorsque le secrétaire de la ville eut calmé la foule, il dit: « Hommes d'Éphèse, quel est l'homme qui ne sait pas que la ville des Éphésiens est gardienne du temple de la grande déesse Artémis et de l'image tombée de Zeus?
And the city clerk having dismissed the multitudes, said, Ephesian men, for what one of men is there that does not know that the city of the Ephesians is a worshiper of the great goddess Diana, and of the statue having fallen down from Jupiter?
36 Puisque vous ne pouvez pas nier ces choses, restez tranquilles et ne faites rien d'irréfléchi.
Therefore these things being unquestionable, it is necessary that you become calm, and do nothing rashly.
37 Car tu as fait venir ces hommes, qui ne sont ni des pilleurs de temples ni des blasphémateurs de ta déesse.
For you have led in these men, who are neither robbers of temples, nor are they blaspheming your goddess.
38 Si donc Démétrius et les artisans qui sont avec lui ont une affaire contre quelqu'un, les tribunaux sont ouverts et il y a des proconsuls. Qu'ils portent plainte les uns contre les autres.
If indeed therefore Demetrius, and the mechanics along with him, have a charge against any one, the courts are in session, and there are lawyers: let them implead one another.
39 Mais si vous cherchez quelque chose à propos d'autres affaires, cela sera réglé dans l'assemblée régulière.
But if you are seeking something concerning other things, it shall be settled in the lawful church.
40 En effet, nous risquons d'être accusés au sujet de l'émeute d'aujourd'hui, sans qu'il y ait de motif. A ce sujet, nous ne pourrions pas rendre compte de cette agitation. »
For indeed we are in danger of prosecution for the disturbance this day, there being no cause concerning which we shall be able to give a reason for this uproar.
41 Après avoir ainsi parlé, il congédia l'assemblée.
And having said these things, he dismissed the church.
