Actes 17
1 Après avoir passé par Amphipolis et Apollonie, ils arrivèrent à Thessalonique, où il y avait une synagogue juive.
Now when they had passed through the cities of Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to the city of Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews.
2 Paul, selon sa coutume, entra chez eux; et, pendant trois sabbats, il discuta avec eux d'après les Écritures,
Paul, as his custom was, went to them, and for three Sabbath days reasoned with them from the scriptures.
3 expliquant et démontrant que le Christ devait souffrir et ressusciter des morts, et disant: « Ce Jésus, que je vous annonce, est le Christ. »
He was opening the scriptures and explaining that it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise again from the dead. He said, “This Jesus whom I proclaim to you is the Christ.”
4 Quelques-uns d'entre eux se laissèrent convaincre et se joignirent à Paul et à Silas; parmi les Grecs pieux, une grande foule, et plusieurs femmes de confiance.
Some of the Jews were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, including a large number of devout Greeks, and not a few of the leading women.
5 Mais les Juifs, qui n'étaient pas convaincus, prirent avec eux quelques méchants hommes de la place et, rassemblant une foule, mirent la ville en émoi. Assaillant la maison de Jason, ils cherchaient à les faire sortir devant le peuple.
But the unbelieving Jews, being moved with jealousy, took certain wicked men from the marketplace, gathered a crowd together, and set the city in an uproar. Assaulting the house of Jason, they wanted to bring Paul and Silas out to the people.
6 Ne les ayant pas trouvés, ils traînèrent Jason et quelques frères devant les chefs de la ville, en s'écriant: « Ceux qui ont mis le monde sens dessus dessous sont aussi venus ici,
But when they did not find them, they dragged Jason and certain other brothers before the officials of the city, crying, “These men who have turned the world upside down have come here also.
7 et Jason les a reçus. Tous ceux-là agissent contrairement aux décrets de César, en disant qu'il y a un autre roi, Jésus! »
These men whom Jason has welcomed act against the decrees of Caesar; they say that there is another king—Jesus.”
8 La foule et les chefs de la ville furent troublés en entendant ces choses.
The crowd and the officials of the city were disturbed when they heard these things.
9 Après avoir pris la garantie de Jason et des autres, ils les laissèrent partir.
But after the officials made Jason and the rest pay money as security, then they let them go.
10 Les frères envoyèrent aussitôt Paul et Silas, de nuit, à Béroé. Lorsqu'ils arrivèrent, ils entrèrent dans la synagogue juive.
That night the brothers sent Paul and Silas to Berea. When they arrived there, they went into the synagogue of the Jews.
11 Or, ces gens-là étaient plus nobles que ceux de Thessalonique, en ce qu'ils recevaient la parole avec une entière disponibilité d'esprit, examinant chaque jour les Écritures pour voir si ces choses étaient vraies.
Now these people were more noble than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with all readiness of mind, examining the scriptures daily to see whether these things were so.
12 Plusieurs d'entre eux crurent donc, ainsi que des femmes grecques éminentes, et beaucoup d'hommes.
Therefore many of them believed, including some influential Greek women and many men.
13 Mais, lorsque les Juifs de Thessalonique eurent appris que la parole de Dieu avait été annoncée par Paul à Béroé aussi, ils y vinrent aussi, agitant la foule.
But when the Jews of Thessalonica learned that Paul was also proclaiming the word of God at Berea, they went there and stirred up and troubled the crowds.
14 Alors les frères envoyèrent aussitôt Paul se rendre jusqu'à la mer, tandis que Silas et Timothée restaient sur place.
Then immediately, the brothers sent Paul to go to the sea, but Silas and Timothy stayed there.
15 Mais ceux qui escortaient Paul le conduisirent jusqu'à Athènes. Ayant reçu l'ordre de Silas et de Timothée de venir très vite auprès de lui, ils partirent.
Those who were leading Paul took him as far as the city of Athens. As they left Paul there, they received from him instructions for Silas and Timothy to come to him as quickly as possible.
16 Pendant que Paul les attendait à Athènes, son esprit s'enflammait au-dedans de lui, lorsqu'il voyait la ville pleine d'idoles.
Now while Paul was waiting for them in Athens, his spirit was provoked within him as he saw the city full of idols.
17 Il discutait donc dans la synagogue avec les Juifs et les personnes pieuses, et chaque jour sur la place publique avec ceux qui le rencontraient.
So he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and others who worshiped God, as well as in the marketplace with those who happened to be there.
18 Quelques-uns des philosophes épicuriens et stoïciens s'entretenaient aussi avec lui. Les uns disaient: « Que veut dire ce bavard? » D'autres ont dit: « Il semble prôner des divinités étrangères », car il prêchait Jésus et la résurrection.
But also some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers encountered him. Some said, “What is this babbler trying to say?” Others said, “He seems to be one who calls people to follow strange gods,” because he was proclaiming Jesus and the resurrection.
19 Ils se saisirent de lui et l'amenèrent à l'Aréopage, en disant: « Pouvons-nous savoir quelle est cette nouvelle doctrine dont tu parles?
They took Paul and brought him to the Areopagus, saying, “May we know this new teaching which you were speaking?
20 Car tu fais entendre à nos oreilles des choses étranges. Nous voulons donc savoir ce que ces choses signifient. »
For you bring some strange things to our ears. Therefore, we want to know what these things mean.”
21 Or, tous les Athéniens et les étrangers qui habitaient là ne passaient leur temps qu'à raconter ou à entendre quelque chose de nouveau.
(Now all the Athenians and the strangers living there spent their time in nothing but either telling or listening about something new.)
22 Paul, debout au milieu de l'Aréopage, dit: Hommes d'Athènes, je vois que vous êtes très religieux à tous égards.
So Paul stood in the middle of the Areopagus and said, “You men of Athens, I see that you are very religious in every way.
23 En effet, en passant et en observant les objets de votre culte, j'ai trouvé un autel portant cette inscription: « A UN DIEU INCONNU »; je vous annonce donc ce que vous adorez par ignorance.
For as I passed along and observed the objects of your worship, I found an altar with this inscription, “To an Unknown God.” What therefore you worship in ignorance, this I announce to you.
24 Le Dieu qui a fait le monde et tout ce qui s'y trouve, lui qui est le Seigneur du ciel et de la terre, n'habite pas dans des temples faits de main d'homme.
The God who made the world and everything in it, since he is Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples built with hands.
25 Il n'est pas servi par des mains d'hommes, comme s'il avait besoin de quelque chose, puisqu'il donne lui-même à tous la vie, le souffle et toutes choses.
Neither is he served by men's hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives people life and breath and everything else.
26 Il a créé d'un seul sang toutes les nations d'hommes pour qu'elles habitent sur toute la surface de la terre, en fixant les saisons et les limites de leurs habitations,
From one man he made every nation of people to live on the surface of the earth, having determined their appointed seasons and the boundaries of their living areas,
27 afin qu'elles cherchent le Seigneur, si peut-être elles pouvaient l'atteindre et le trouver, bien qu'il ne soit pas loin de chacun de nous.
so that they should search for God and perhaps they may feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is not far from each one of us.
28 Car c'est en lui que nous vivons, que nous nous mouvons et que nous avons notre existence. Comme l'ont dit certains de vos poètes: « Car nous sommes aussi sa descendance ».
For in him we live and move and have our being, just as one of your own poets has said, 'For we also are his offspring.'
29 Étant donc la progéniture de Dieu, nous ne devons pas penser que la nature divine soit semblable à de l'or, de l'argent ou de la pierre, gravés par l'art et le dessein de l'homme.
Therefore, since we are God's offspring, we ought not to think that the qualities of deity are like gold, or silver, or stone—images created by the art and imagination of man.
30 Dieu a donc négligé les temps d'ignorance. Mais maintenant il ordonne que tous les hommes, en tout lieu, se repentent,
Therefore God overlooked the times of ignorance, but now he commands all men everywhere to repent.
31 parce qu'il a fixé un jour où il jugera le monde selon la justice, par l'homme qu'il a désigné, et dont il a donné l'assurance à tous les hommes qu'il l'a ressuscité des morts. »
This is because he has set a day when he will judge the world in righteousness by the man he has chosen. God has given proof of this man to everyone by raising him from the dead.”
32 Lorsqu'ils entendirent parler de la résurrection des morts, les uns se moquèrent; mais les autres dirent: « Nous voulons t'entendre encore à ce sujet. »
Now when the men of Athens heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked Paul; but others said, “We will listen to you again about this matter.”
33 Paul se retira donc du milieu d'eux.
After that, Paul left them.
34 Mais quelques hommes se joignirent à lui et crurent, entre autres Denys l'Aréopagite, et une femme nommée Damaris, et d'autres avec eux.
But certain men joined him and believed, including Dionysius the Areopagite, a woman named Damaris, and others with them.
