2 Chroniques 32
1 Après ces choses et cette fidélité, Sennachérib, roi d'Assyrie, arriva, entra en Juda, campa contre les villes fortifiées et eut l'intention de les gagner pour lui.
After these things, and this faithfulness, Sennacherib king of Assyria came, and entered into Judah, and encamped against the fortified cities, and thought to win them for himself.
2 Lorsqu'Ézéchias vit que Sennachérib était venu et qu'il projetait de combattre Jérusalem,
And when Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib came, and that he intended to fight against Jerusalem,
3 il consulta ses princes et ses hommes forts pour arrêter les eaux des sources qui étaient à l'extérieur de la ville, et ils l'aidèrent.
he took counsel with his rulers and his mighty men to stop the waters of the fountains which were outside the city. And they helped him.
4 Alors beaucoup de gens se rassemblèrent et ils arrêtèrent toutes les sources et le ruisseau qui coulait au milieu du pays, en disant: « Pourquoi les rois d'Assyrie viendraient-ils et trouveraient-ils de l'eau en abondance? »
So there was gathered together many people. And they stopped all the fountains, and the brook that flowed through the midst of the land, saying, Why should the kings of Assyria come, and find much water?
5 Il prit courage, rebâtit toute la muraille abattue, l'éleva jusqu'aux tours, avec l'autre muraille en dehors, et renforça Millo dans la ville de David; il fabriqua des armes et des boucliers en abondance.
And he took courage, and built up all the wall that was broken down, and raised it up to the towers, and the other wall outside, and strengthened Millo in the city of David, and made weapons and shields in abundance.
6 Il plaça des chefs de guerre à la tête du peuple, les rassembla auprès de lui sur la grande place à la porte de la ville, et leur adressa des paroles d'encouragement en disant:
And he set captains of war over the people, and gathered them together to him in the broad place at the gate of the city, and spoke encouragingly to them, saying,
7 « Soyez forts et courageux. Ne craignez pas et ne soyez pas effrayés à cause du roi d'Assyrie et de toute la multitude qui est avec lui, car il y a plus grand que lui avec nous.
Be strong and of good courage, be not afraid nor dismayed of the king of Assyria, nor of all the multitude that is with him. For there is a greater with us than with him.
8 Il a avec lui un bras de chair, mais Yahvé notre Dieu est avec nous pour nous secourir et mener nos combats. » Le peuple se reposa sur les paroles d'Ézéchias, roi de Juda.
With him is an arm of flesh, but with us is Jehovah our God to help us, and to fight our battles. And the people rested themselves upon the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.
9 Après cela, Sennacherib, roi d'Assyrie, envoya ses serviteurs à Jérusalem (il était en train d'attaquer Lachish, et toutes ses forces étaient avec lui), à Ézéchias, roi de Juda, et à tous les Judéens qui étaient à Jérusalem, en disant:
After this Sennacherib king of Assyria sent his servants to Jerusalem (now he was before Lachish, and all his power with him) to Hezekiah king of Judah, and to all Judah that were at Jerusalem, saying,
10 Sennacherib, roi d'Assyrie, dit: « En qui vous confiez-vous, puisque vous restez assiégés à Jérusalem?
Thus says Sennacherib king of Assyria, On what do ye trust that ye remain in the siege in Jerusalem?
11 Ézéchias ne vous persuade-t-il pas de vous livrer à la mort par la famine et par la soif, en disant: « Yahvé notre Dieu nous délivrera de la main du roi d'Assyrie? »
Does not Hezekiah persuade you, to give you over to die by famine and by thirst, saying, Jehovah our God will deliver us out of the hand of the king of Assyria?
12 Le même Ézéchias n'a-t-il pas enlevé ses hauts lieux et ses autels, et n'a-t-il pas donné cet ordre à Juda et à Jérusalem: « Vous vous prosternerez devant un seul autel, et vous y brûlerez des parfums? »
Has not the same Hezekiah taken away his high places and his altars, and commanded Judah and Jerusalem, saying, Ye shall worship before one altar, and upon it ye shall burn incense?
13 Ne savez-vous pas ce que moi et mes pères avons fait à tous les peuples du pays? Les dieux des nations de ces pays étaient-ils en mesure de délivrer leur pays de ma main?
Know ye not what I and my fathers have done to all the peoples of the lands? Were the gods of the nations of the lands in any way able to deliver their land out of my hand?
14 Qui, parmi tous les dieux de ces nations que mes pères ont dévastées, pouvait délivrer son peuple de ma main, pour que ton Dieu puisse te délivrer de ma main?
Who was there among all the gods of those nations, which my fathers utterly destroyed, that could deliver his people out of my hand that your God should be able to deliver you out of my hand?
15 Maintenant, ne vous laissez pas tromper par Ezéchias et ne vous persuadez pas de cette manière. Ne le croyez pas, car aucun dieu d'aucune nation ni d'aucun royaume n'a pu délivrer son peuple de ma main et de la main de mes pères. A combien moins forte raison votre Dieu vous délivrera-t-il de ma main? »
Now therefore let not Hezekiah deceive you, nor persuade you after this manner, neither believe ye him. For no god of any nation or kingdom was able to deliver his people out of my hand, and out of the hand of my fathers. How much less shall your God deliver you out of my hand?
16 Ses serviteurs parlèrent encore contre l'Éternel Dieu et contre son serviteur Ézéchias.
And his servants spoke yet more against Jehovah God, and against his servant Hezekiah.
17 Il écrivit aussi des lettres insultant Yahvé, le Dieu d'Israël, et parlant contre lui, disant: « Comme les dieux des nations du pays, qui n'ont pas délivré leur peuple de ma main, ainsi le Dieu d'Ézéchias ne délivrera pas son peuple de ma main. »
He also wrote letters, to rail on Jehovah, the God of Israel, and to speak against him, saying, As the gods of the nations of the lands, which have not delivered their people out of my hand, so shall the God of Hezekiah not deliver his people out of my hand.
18 Ils appelèrent d'une voix forte, dans la langue des Juifs, les habitants de Jérusalem qui étaient sur la muraille, pour les effrayer et les troubler, afin de prendre la ville.
And they cried with a loud voice in the Jews' language to the people of Jerusalem who were on the wall, to frighten them, and to trouble them, that they might take the city.
19 Ils parlaient du Dieu de Jérusalem comme des dieux des peuples de la terre, qui sont l'œuvre de mains d'hommes.
And they spoke of the God of Jerusalem, as of the gods of the peoples of the earth, which are the work of men's hands.
20 Le roi Ézéchias et le prophète Ésaïe, fils d'Amoz, prièrent à cause de cela et crièrent au ciel.
And Hezekiah the king, and Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz, prayed because of this, and cried out to heaven.
21 Yahvé envoya un ange qui extermina tous les vaillants hommes, les chefs et les capitaines dans le camp du roi d'Assyrie. Celui-ci s'en retourna, honteux de son visage, dans son pays. Comme il était entré dans la maison de son dieu, ceux qui étaient sortis de son propre corps l'y tuèrent par l'épée.
And Jehovah sent an agent who cut off all the mighty men of valor, and the leaders and captains, in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he returned with shame of face to his own land. And when he came into the house of his god, those who came forth from his own bowels killed him there with the sword.
22 Ainsi Yahvé sauva Ézéchias et les habitants de Jérusalem de la main de Sennacherib, roi d'Assyrie, et de la main de tous les autres, et il les guida de tous côtés.
Thus Jehovah saved Hezekiah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem from the hand of Sennacherib the king of Assyria, and from the hand of all others, and guided them on every side.
23 Beaucoup apportèrent des présents à Yahvé à Jérusalem et des objets précieux à Ézéchias, roi de Juda, de sorte qu'il fut désormais exalté aux yeux de toutes les nations.
And many brought gifts to Jehovah to Jerusalem, and precious things to Hezekiah king of Judah. So that he was exalted in the sight of all nations from thenceforth.
24 En ces jours-là, Ézéchias était en phase terminale, et il pria Yahvé; celui-ci lui parla et lui donna un signe.
In those days Hezekiah was sick even to death, and he prayed to Jehovah. And he spoke to him, and gave him a sign.
25 Mais Ézéchias ne rendit pas le bienfait qui lui avait été fait, parce que son cœur s'élevait. C'est pourquoi il y eut de la colère sur lui, sur Juda et sur Jérusalem.
But Hezekiah did not render again according to the benefit done to him. For his heart was lifted up. Therefore there was wrath upon him, and upon Judah and Jerusalem.
26 Cependant, Ézéchias s'humilia à cause de l'orgueil de son cœur, lui et les habitants de Jérusalem, de sorte que la colère de Yahvé ne s'abattit pas sur eux du temps d'Ézéchias.
Notwithstanding Hezekiah humbled himself for the pride of his heart, both he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the wrath of Jehovah did not come upon them in the days of Hezekiah.
27 Ézéchias eut des richesses et des honneurs immenses. Il se pourvut de trésors pour l'argent, pour l'or, pour les pierres précieuses, pour les aromates, pour les boucliers, et pour toutes sortes de vases précieux;
And Hezekiah had exceedingly much riches and honor. And he provided for him treasuries for silver, and for gold, and for precious stones, and for spices, and for shields, and for all manner of goodly vessels,
28 il se pourvut aussi de magasins pour la production du blé, du vin nouveau et de l'huile, et d'étables pour toutes sortes de bêtes, et de troupeaux en plis.
also store-houses for the increase of grain and new wine and oil, and stalls for all manner of beasts, and flocks in folds.
29 Il se procura aussi des villes, et des biens en abondance pour le bétail et les troupeaux, car Dieu lui avait donné des biens en abondance.
Moreover he provided for him cities, and possessions of flocks and herds in abundance. For God had given him very much substance.
30 Ce même Ézéchias arrêta aussi la source supérieure des eaux du Gihon, et les fit descendre directement à l'ouest de la ville de David. Ézéchias prospéra dans toutes ses œuvres.
This same Hezekiah also stopped the upper spring of the waters of Gihon, and brought them straight down on the west side of the city of David. And Hezekiah prospered in all his works.
31 Cependant, à propos des ambassadeurs des princes de Babylone, qui l'envoyèrent s'enquérir du prodige qui se faisait dans le pays, Dieu le laissa pour l'éprouver, afin qu'il sache tout ce qui était dans son cœur.
However in the business of the ambassadors of the rulers of Babylon, who sent to him to inquire of the wonder that was done in the land, God left him, to try him, that he might know all that was in his heart.
32 Le reste des actes d'Ézéchias et ses bonnes actions, voici, ils sont écrits dans la vision du prophète Ésaïe, fils d'Amoz, dans le livre des rois de Juda et d'Israël.
Now the rest of the acts of Hezekiah, and his good deeds, behold, they are written in the vision of Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz, in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel.
33 Ézéchias se coucha avec ses pères, et on l'enterra dans la montée des tombeaux des fils de David. Tout Juda et les habitants de Jérusalem l'honorèrent à sa mort. Manassé, son fils, régna à sa place.
And Hezekiah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the ascent of the sepulchers of the sons of David. And all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem honored him at his death. And Manasseh his son reigned in his stead.
