2 Chroniques 14

1 Abija se coucha avec ses pères, et on l'enterra dans la ville de David; et Asa, son fils, régna à sa place. De son vivant, le pays fut tranquille pendant dix ans.

Then Abijah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the City of David. And his son, Asa, reigned in his place. During his days, the land was quiet for ten years.

2 Asa fit ce qui est bon et droit aux yeux de l'Éternel, son Dieu.

Now Asa did what was good and pleasing in the sight of his God. And he overturned the altars of foreign worship, and the high places.

3 Il fit disparaître les autels étrangers et les hauts lieux, brisa les colonnes, abattit les mâts d'ashère,

And he broke apart the statues, and he cut down the sacred groves.

4 et ordonna à Juda de chercher l'Éternel, le Dieu de ses pères, et d'obéir à sa loi et à ses ordres.

And he instructed Judah that they should seek the Lord, the God of their fathers, and that they should carry out the law and all the commandments.

5 Il fit disparaître de toutes les villes de Juda les hauts lieux et les images du soleil, et le royaume fut tranquille devant lui.

And he took away, from all the cities of Judah, the altars and the shrines. And he reigned in peace.

6 Il bâtit des villes fortes en Juda; car le pays était tranquille, et il n'y eut pas de guerre en ces années-là, parce que Yahvé lui avait donné du repos.

Also, he built fortified cities in Judah. For it was quiet, and in his time no wars had arisen. For the Lord was generously granting peace.

7 Car il dit à Juda: « Bâtissons ces villes et faisons des murs autour d'elles, avec des tours, des portes et des barres. Le pays est encore devant nous, car nous avons cherché Yahvé notre Dieu. Nous l'avons cherché, et il nous a donné du repos de tous côtés. » Ils construisirent donc et prospérèrent.

Then he said to Judah: “Let us build these cities, and strengthen them with walls, and fortify them with towers and gates and bars, while all things are at rest from wars. For we have sought the Lord, the God of our fathers, and he has granted to us peace on every side.” And so they built, and there was nothing to impede them from building.

8 Asa avait une armée de trois cent mille hommes de Juda, portant des boucliers et des lances, et de deux cent quatre-vingt mille hommes de Benjamin, portant des boucliers et tirant de l'arc. Tous ces hommes étaient de vaillants guerriers.

Now Asa had in his army three hundred thousand men of Judah, carrying shields and spears, and truly, of Benjamin, two hundred eighty thousand men with shields and bows. All of these were very valiant men.

9 Zérah, l'Éthiopien, sortit contre eux avec une armée d'un million de soldats et trois cents chars, et il arriva à Maréscha.

Then Zerah, the Ethiopian, went forth against them with his army of one million men, and three hundred chariots. And he approached as far as Mareshah.

10 Asa sortit à sa rencontre, et ils se rangèrent en bataille dans la vallée de Zephatha, à Maréscha.

And Asa traveled to meet him, and he set up a battle line for the war in the Valley of Zephathah, which is near Mareshah.

11 Asa cria à Yahvé, son Dieu, et dit: « Yahvé, il n'y a personne d'autre que toi pour nous aider, entre le puissant et le faible. Secours-nous, Yahvé notre Dieu, car nous comptons sur toi, et c'est en ton nom que nous sommes venus contre cette multitude. Yahvé, tu es notre Dieu. Ne laisse pas l'homme l'emporter sur toi ».

And he called upon the Lord God, and he said: “O Lord, there is no difference to you, whether you assist by few, or by many. Help us, O Lord our God. For having faith in you and in your name, we have gone forth against this multitude. O Lord, you are our God. Do not allow man to prevail against you.”

12 Et Yahvé frappa les Éthiopiens devant Asa et devant Juda, et les Éthiopiens s'enfuirent.

And so the Lord terrified the Ethiopians before Asa and Judah. And the Ethiopians fled.

13 Asa et le peuple qui était avec lui les poursuivirent jusqu'à Gerar. Les Éthiopiens tombèrent en si grand nombre qu'ils ne purent se relever, car ils furent détruits devant Yahvé et devant son armée. L'armée de Juda emporta un très gros butin.

And Asa, and the people who were with him, pursued them as far as Gerar. And the Ethiopians fell, even unto utter destruction, for the Lord was striking, and his army was battling, and they were destroyed. Therefore, they took many spoils.

14 Ils frappèrent toutes les villes des environs de Gerar, car la crainte de l'Éternel les saisit. Ils pillèrent toutes les villes, car il y avait là beaucoup de butin.

And they struck all the cities surrounding Gerar. For indeed, a great fear had overwhelmed everyone. And they despoiled the cities, and they carried away much plunder.

15 Ils frappèrent aussi les tentes de ceux qui avaient du bétail et emportèrent en abondance des moutons et des chameaux, puis ils retournèrent à Jérusalem.

Then too, destroying the fencing for the sheep, they took an innumerable multitude of cattle and camels. And they returned to Jerusalem.
