1 Samuel 25

1 Samuel mourut. Tout Israël se rassembla, prit le deuil et l'enterra dans sa maison à Rama. David se leva et descendit dans le désert de Paran.

And death came to Samuel; and all Israel came together, weeping for him, and put his body in its resting-place in his house at Ramah. Then David went down to the waste land of Maon.

2 Il y avait à Maon un homme dont les biens étaient au Carmel, et cet homme était très grand. Il avait trois mille brebis et mille chèvres, et il tondait ses brebis au Carmel.

Now there was a man in Maon whose business was in Carmel; he was a great man and had three thousand sheep and a thousand goats: and he was cutting the wool of his sheep in Carmel.

3 Or le nom de cet homme était Nabal, et le nom de sa femme Abigaïl. Cette femme était intelligente et avait un beau visage; mais l'homme était hargneux et méchant dans ses actions. Il était de la maison de Caleb.

Now this man was named Nabal, and his wife's name was Abigail: she was a woman of good sense and pleasing looks: but the man was cruel and evil in his ways; he was of the family of Caleb.

4 David apprit dans le désert que Nabal tondait ses brebis.

And David had word in the waste land that Nabal was cutting the wool of his sheep.

5 David envoya dix jeunes gens. Il leur dit: « Montez au Carmel, allez vers Nabal, et saluez-le en mon nom.

And David sent ten young men, and said to them, Go up to Carmel and go to Nabal, and say kind words to him in my name;

6 Dites-lui: « Longue vie à toi! Que la paix soit avec toi! Que la paix soit avec ta maison! Que la paix soit avec tout ce qui t'appartient!

And say this to my brother, May all be well for you: peace be to you and your house and all you have.

7 J'ai appris que tu as des tondeurs. Vos bergers ont maintenant été avec nous, et nous ne leur avons fait aucun mal. Rien n'a manqué d'eux pendant tout le temps qu'ils ont été au Carmel.

I have had word that you have wool-cutters: now the keepers of your sheep have been with us, and we have done them no evil, and taken nothing of theirs while they were in Carmel.

8 Interrogez vos jeunes gens, et ils vous le diront. Que les jeunes gens trouvent grâce à tes yeux, car nous venons en un jour favorable. Donne, je te prie, tout ce qui te tombe sous la main à tes serviteurs et à ton fils David.'"

If your young men are questioned they will say the same thing. So now, let my young men have grace in your eyes, for we are come at a good time; please give anything you may have by you to your servants and to your son David.

9 Lorsque les jeunes gens de David arrivèrent, ils dirent à Nabal toutes ces paroles au nom de David, et ils attendirent.

And when David's young men came, they said all this to Nabal, in David's name, and said nothing more.

10 Nabal répondit aux serviteurs de David et dit: « Qui est David? Qui est le fils de Jessé? Il y a beaucoup de serviteurs qui se séparent de leurs maîtres ces jours-ci.

And Nabal gave them his answer and said, Who is David? who is the son of Jesse? there are a number of servants in these days running away from their masters.

11 Dois-je donc prendre mon pain, mon eau et la viande que j'ai tuée pour mes tondeurs, et les donner à des hommes dont j'ignore l'origine? ».

Am I to take my bread and my wine and the meat I have got ready for my wool-cutters and give it to men coming from I have no idea where?

12 Et les jeunes gens de David s'en retournèrent sur leur chemin, et vinrent lui rapporter toutes ces paroles.

So David's young men, turning away, went back and gave him an account of everything he had said.

13 David dit à ses hommes: « Que chacun mette son épée! » Chaque homme a mis son épée. David mit aussi son épée. Environ quatre cents hommes suivirent David, et deux cents restèrent près des bagages.

And David said to his men, Put on your swords, every one of you. And every man put on his sword; and David did the same; and about four hundred men went up with David, and two hundred kept watch over their goods.

14 Mais l'un des jeunes gens dit à Abigaïl, la femme de Nabal: « Voici, David a envoyé des messagers du désert pour saluer notre maître, et il les a insultés.

But one of the young men said to Nabal's wife Abigail, David sent men from the waste land to say kind words to our master, and he gave them a rough answer.

15 Mais ces hommes ont été très bons avec nous, et nous n'avons pas été blessés, et nous n'avons rien manqué tant que nous avons été avec eux, quand nous étions dans les champs.

But these men have been very good to us; they did us no wrong and nothing of ours was touched while we were with them in the fields:

16 Ils étaient pour nous une muraille, de nuit comme de jour, pendant tout le temps que nous étions avec eux à garder les brebis.

But day and night they were like a wall round us while we were with them, looking after the sheep.

17 Maintenant donc, sachez et réfléchissez à ce que vous ferez, car le mal est décidé contre notre maître et contre toute sa maison, car il est si inutile qu'on ne peut pas lui parler. »

So now, give thought to what you are going to do; for evil is in store for our master and all his house: for he is such a good-for-nothing person that it is not possible to say anything to him.

18 Alors Abigaïl se hâta de prendre deux cents pains, deux récipients de vin, cinq moutons apprêtés, cinq seahs de grains secs, cent grappes de raisins secs et deux cents gâteaux de figues, et les fit monter sur des ânes.

Then Abigail quickly took two hundred cakes of bread and two skins full of wine and five sheep ready for cooking and five measures of dry grain and a hundred parcels of dry grapes and two hundred cakes of figs, and put them on asses.

19 Elle dit à ses jeunes gens: « Passez devant moi. Voici que je viens après vous. » Mais elle ne le dit pas à son mari, Nabal.

And she said to her young men, Go on in front of me and I will come after you. But she said nothing to her husband Nabal.

20 Comme elle montait sur son âne et descendait cachée par la montagne, voici que David et ses hommes descendaient vers elle, et elle les rencontra.

Now while she was going down under cover of the mountain on her ass, David and his men came down against her, and suddenly she came face to face with them.

21 Or David avait dit: « C'est en vain que j'ai gardé tout ce que cet homme a dans le désert, de sorte que rien n'a manqué de tout ce qui lui appartenait. Il m'a rendu le mal pour le bien.

Now David had said, What was the use of my taking care of this man's goods in the waste land, so that there was no loss of anything which was his? he has only given me back evil for good.

22 Que Dieu fasse ainsi aux ennemis de David, et plus encore, si je laisse de tout ce qui lui appartient à la lumière du matin autant que quelqu'un qui urine sur un mur. »

May God's punishment be on David, if when morning comes there is so much as one male of his people still living.

23 Lorsqu'Abigaïl vit David, elle se précipita, descendit de son âne, tomba devant David sur sa face et se prosterna à terre.

And when Abigail saw David, she quickly got off her ass, falling down on her face before him.

24 Elle tomba à ses pieds et dit: « C'est à moi, mon seigneur, que revient la faute! Laisse ton serviteur parler à tes oreilles. Écoute les paroles de ta servante.

And falling at his feet she said, May the wrong be on me, my lord, on me: let your servant say a word to you, and give ear to the words of your servant.

25 Ne permets pas à mon seigneur d'être attentif à ce bon à rien de Nabal, car il est comme son nom. Nabal est son nom, et la folie est avec lui; mais moi, ton serviteur, je n'ai pas vu les jeunes gens de mon seigneur que tu as envoyés.

Let my lord give no attention to Nabal, that good-for-nothing: for as his name is, so is he, a man without sense: but I, your servant, did not see the young men whom my lord sent.

26 Maintenant, mon seigneur, comme l'Éternel est vivant et comme ton âme est vivante, puisque l'Éternel t'a empêché de te rendre coupable par le sang et de te venger de ta propre main, maintenant, que tes ennemis et ceux qui cherchent à nuire à mon seigneur soient comme Nabal.

So now, my lord, by the living God and by your living soul, seeing that the Lord has kept you from the crime of blood and from taking into your hands the punishment for your wrongs, may all your haters, and those who would do evil to my lord, be like Nabal.

27 Maintenant, ce présent que ton serviteur a apporté à mon seigneur, qu'il soit donné aux jeunes gens qui suivent mon seigneur.

And let this offering, which your servant gives to my lord, be given to the young men who are with my lord.

28 Je te prie de pardonner la faute de ton serviteur. Car l'Éternel fera de mon seigneur une maison sûre, parce que mon seigneur mène les combats de l'Éternel. Le mal ne se trouvera pas chez toi tous tes jours.

And may the sin of your servant have forgiveness: for the Lord will certainly make your family strong, because my lord is fighting in the Lord's war; and no evil will be seen in you all your days.

29 Si des hommes se lèvent pour te poursuivre et chercher ton âme, l'âme de mon seigneur sera liée dans le faisceau de vie de Yahvé ton Dieu. Il fera sortir les âmes de tes ennemis comme de la poche d'une fronde.

And though a man has taken up arms against you, putting your life in danger, still the soul of my lord will be kept safe among the band of the living with the Lord your God; and the souls of those who are against you he will send violently away from him, like stones from a bag.

30 Lorsque l'Éternel aura fait à mon seigneur tout le bien qu'il a dit de toi et qu'il t'aura établi chef d'Israël,

And when the Lord has done for my lord all those good things which he has said he will do for you, and has made you a ruler over Israel;

31 tu ne seras pas affligé, et mon seigneur ne sera pas offensé, soit que tu aies versé du sang sans raison, soit que mon seigneur se soit vengé. Quand Yahvé aura fait du bien à mon seigneur, souviens-toi de ton serviteur. »

Then you will have no cause for grief, and my lord's heart will not be troubled because you have taken life without cause and have yourself given punishment for your wrongs: and when the Lord has been good to you, then give a thought to your servant.

32 David dit à Abigaïl: « Béni soit Yahvé, le Dieu d'Israël, qui t'a envoyée aujourd'hui à ma rencontre!

And David said to Abigail, May the Lord, the God of Israel, be praised, who sent you to me today:

33 Béni soit ta discrétion, et bénie sois-tu, qui m'a empêché aujourd'hui de me rendre coupable de sang, et de me venger de ma propre main.

A blessing on your good sense and on you, who have kept me today from the crime of blood and from taking into my hands the punishment for my wrongs.

34 En effet, comme vit Yahvé, le Dieu d'Israël, qui m'a empêché de te faire du mal, si tu ne t'étais pas empressé de venir à ma rencontre, il ne serait pas resté à Nabal, à la lumière du matin, plus qu'un homme qui urine sur un mur. »

For truly, by the living Lord, the God of Israel, who has kept me from doing you evil, if you had not been so quick in coming to me and meeting me, by dawn there would not have been in Nabal's house so much as one male living.

35 Et David reçut de sa main ce qu'elle lui avait apporté. Puis il lui dit: « Monte en paix dans ta maison. Voici que j'ai écouté ta voix et que j'ai exaucé ta demande. »

Then David took from her hands her offering: and he said to her, Go back to your house in peace; see, I have given ear to your voice, and taken your offering with respect.

36 Abigaïl se rendit auprès de Nabal; et voici qu'il donnait dans sa maison un festin comme celui d'un roi. Le cœur de Nabal était joyeux au-dedans de lui, car il était très ivre. Aussi ne lui dit-elle rien jusqu'à la lumière du matin.

And Abigail went back to Nabal; and he was feasting in his house like a king; and Nabal's heart was full of joy, for he had taken much wine; so she said nothing to him till dawn came.

37 Le matin, quand le vin eut disparu de Nabal, sa femme lui raconta ces choses; son cœur mourut au dedans de lui, et il devint comme une pierre.

And in the morning, when the effect of the wine was gone, Nabal's wife gave him an account of all these things, and all the heart went out of him, and he became like stone.

38 Environ dix jours plus tard, l'Éternel frappa Nabal, de sorte qu'il mourut.

And about ten days after, the Lord sent disease on Nabal and death came to him.

39 Lorsque David apprit que Nabal était mort, il dit: « Béni soit Yahvé, qui a défendu ma cause de la main de Nabal et qui a préservé son serviteur du mal. Yahvé a fait retomber la méchanceté de Nabal sur sa propre tête. » David envoya et parla au sujet d'Abigaïl, pour la prendre pour femme.

And David, hearing that Nabal was dead, said, May the Lord be praised, who has taken up my cause against Nabal for the shame which he put on me, and has kept back his servant from evil, and has sent on Nabal's head the reward of his evil-doing. And David sent word to Abigail, desiring to take her as his wife.

40 Lorsque les serviteurs de David furent arrivés auprès d'Abigaïl au Carmel, ils lui parlèrent ainsi: « David nous a envoyés vers toi, pour te prendre pour femme. »

And when David's servants came to Carmel, to Abigail, they said to her, David has sent us to you to take you to him as his wife.

41 Elle se leva, se prosterna, le visage contre terre, et dit: « Voici que ta servante est une servante pour laver les pieds des serviteurs de mon seigneur. »

And she got up, and going down on her face to the earth, said, See, I am ready to be a servant-girl, washing the feet of the servants of my lord.

42 Abigaïl se leva précipitamment et monta sur un âne avec ses cinq servantes qui la suivaient; elle suivit les messagers de David et devint sa femme.

Then Abigail got up quickly and went on her ass, with five of her young women, after the men whom David had sent; and she became David's wife.

43 David prit aussi Ahinoam, de Jizreel, et toutes deux devinrent ses femmes.

And David had taken Ahinoam of Jezreel, to be his wife; these two were his wives.

44 Or Saül avait donné Mical, sa fille, la femme de David, à Palti, fils de Laïsh, qui était de Gallim.

Now Saul had given his daughter Michal, David's wife, to Palti the son of Laish of Gallim.
