1 Samuel 11
1 Et Nahash, l'Ammonite, monta et campa contre Jabesh Galaad; et tous les hommes de Jabesh dirent à Nahash: « Fais une alliance avec nous, et nous te servirons. »
And Nahash the Ammonite comes up, and encamps against Jabesh-Gilead, and all the men of Jabesh say to Nahash, “Make a covenant with us, and we serve you.”
2 Nahash, l'Ammonite, leur dit: « A cette condition, je vous l'accorde, que tous vos yeux droits soient crevés. Je déshonorerai ainsi tout Israël. »
And Nahash the Ammonite says to them, “For this I cut [a covenant] with you, in picking out every right eye of yours—and I have set it [for] a reproach on all Israel.”
3 Les anciens de Jabesh lui dirent: « Donne-nous sept jours, pour que nous envoyions des messagers dans tout le territoire d'Israël; et alors, s'il n'y a personne pour nous sauver, nous sortirons vers toi. »
And [the] elderly of Jabesh say to him, “Leave us alone [for] seven days, and we send messengers into all the border of Israel: and if there is none saving us—then we have come out to you.”
4 Les messagers arrivèrent à Gibéa de Saül et prononcèrent ces paroles aux oreilles du peuple, alors tout le peuple éleva la voix et pleura.
And the messengers come to Gibeah of Saul, and speak the words in the ears of the people, and all the people lift up their voice and weep;
5 Voici que Saül suivait les bœufs hors des champs, et il dit: « Qu'est-ce qui fait pleurer le peuple? » On lui rapporta les paroles des hommes de Jabesh.
and behold, Saul has come out of the field after the herd, and Saul says, “What [is that] to the people, that they weep?” And they recount the words of the men of Jabesh to him.
6 L'Esprit de Dieu se manifesta puissamment sur Saül lorsqu'il entendit ces paroles, et sa colère s'enflamma.
And the Spirit of God prospers over Saul, in his hearing these words, and his anger burns greatly,
7 Il prit un joug de bœufs et les coupa en morceaux, puis il les envoya dans tout le territoire d'Israël par la main de messagers, en disant: « Quiconque ne sortira pas après Saül et après Samuel, il en sera fait de même pour ses bœufs. » La terreur de Yahvé tomba sur le peuple, et ils sortirent comme un seul homme.
and he takes a couple of oxen, and cuts them in pieces, and sends [them] through all the border of Israel, by the hand of the messengers, saying, “He who is not coming out after Saul and after Samuel—thus it is done to his oxen”; and the fear of YHWH falls on the people, and they come out as one man.
8 Il les compta à Bézek; les enfants d'Israël étaient trois cent mille, et les hommes de Juda trente mille.
And he inspects them in Bezek, and the sons of Israel are three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand.
9 Ils dirent aux messagers qui étaient venus: « Dis aux hommes de Jabesh Galaad: « Demain, quand le soleil sera chaud, vous serez secourus. » Les messagers vinrent le dire aux hommes de Jabesh, et ils se réjouirent.
And they say to the messengers who are coming, “Thus you say to the men of Jabesh-Gilead: Tomorrow you have safety—by the heat of the sun”; and the messengers come and declare [it] to the men of Jabesh, and they rejoice;
10 Les hommes de Jabesh dirent: « Demain, nous sortirons vers vous, et vous ferez avec nous tout ce qui vous semblera bon. »
and the men of Jabesh say [to the Ammonites], “Tomorrow we come out to you, and you have done to us according to all that [is] good in your eyes.”
11 Le lendemain, Saül répartit le peuple en trois compagnies; elles entrèrent au milieu du camp à la veille du matin, et frappèrent les Ammonites jusqu'à la chaleur du jour. Ceux qui restaient furent dispersés, de sorte qu'il n'en resta pas deux ensemble.
And it comes to pass, on the next day, that Saul puts the people in three detachments, and they come into the midst of the camp in the morning-watch, and strike Ammon until the heat of the day; and it comes to pass that those left are scattered, and there have not been left two of them together.
12 Le peuple dit à Samuel: « Qui est celui qui a dit: « Saül régnera-t-il sur nous? ». Amène ces hommes, afin que nous les mettions à mort! ».
And the people say to Samuel, “Who is he that says, Saul reigns over us? Give up the men, and we put them to death.”
13 Saül dit: « Personne ne sera mis à mort aujourd'hui, car aujourd'hui Yahvé a sauvé Israël. »
And Saul says, “There is no man put to death on this day, for today YHWH has worked salvation in Israel.”
14 Alors Samuel dit au peuple: « Venez! Allons à Gilgal, et renouvelons-y la royauté. »
And Samuel says to the people, “Come and we go to Gilgal, and renew the kingdom there”;
15 Tout le peuple alla à Guilgal; et là, à Guilgal, ils établirent Saül comme roi devant Yahvé. Là, ils offrirent des sacrifices de paix devant Yahvé, et là, Saül et tous les hommes d'Israël se réjouirent grandement.
and all the people go to Gilgal, and cause Saul to reign there before YHWH in Gilgal, and sacrifice sacrifices of peace-offerings there before YHWH, and Saul rejoices there—and all the men of Israel—very greatly.
