1 Roboam se rendit à Sichem, car tout Israël était venu à Sichem pour le faire roi.
And Rehoboam goes to Shechem, for all Israel has come to Shechem to make him king.
2 Lorsque Jéroboam, fils de Nebath, en eut connaissance (car il était encore en Égypte, où il s'était enfui de la présence du roi Salomon, et Jéroboam vivait en Égypte;
And it comes to pass, at Jeroboam son of Nebat’s hearing (and he [is] yet in Egypt where he has fled from the presence of Solomon the king, and Jeroboam dwells in Egypt),
3 et on l'envoya chercher), Jéroboam et toute l'assemblée d'Israël vinrent et parlèrent à Roboam, en disant:
that they send and call for him; and they come—Jeroboam and all the assembly of Israel—and speak to Rehoboam, saying,
4 « Ton père a rendu notre joug difficile. Maintenant donc, allège le dur service de ton père et le lourd joug qu'il nous a imposé, et nous te servirons. »
“Your father hardened our yoke, and you, now, lighten [some] of the hard service of your father, and his heavy yoke that he put on us, and we serve you.”
5 Il leur dit: « Partez pour trois jours, puis revenez vers moi. » Alors les gens sont partis.
And he says to them, “Yet go [for] three days, and come back to me”; and the people go.
6 Le roi Roboam consulta les vieillards qui s'étaient présentés devant Salomon, son père, de son vivant, et dit: « Quel conseil me donnez-vous pour répondre à ces gens? »
And King Rehoboam consults with the elderly who have been standing in the presence of his father Solomon, in his being alive, saying, “How are you counseling to answer this people?”
7 Ils répondirent: « Si tu veux être aujourd'hui le serviteur de ce peuple, si tu le sers et si tu lui réponds par de bonnes paroles, alors ils seront tes serviteurs pour toujours. »
And they speak to him, saying, “If, today, you are a servant of this people, and have served them, and answered them, and spoken good words to them, then they have been servants to you [for] all the days.”
8 Mais il abandonna le conseil des vieillards qu'ils lui avaient donné, et tint conseil avec les jeunes gens qui avaient grandi avec lui, et qui se tenaient devant lui.
And he forsakes the counsel of the elderly which they counseled him, and consults with the boys who have grown up with him, who are standing before him;
9 Il leur dit: « Quel conseil donnez-vous, pour que nous répondions à ces gens qui m'ont parlé en disant: « Allègez le joug que votre père a mis sur nous? »".
and he says to them, “What are you counseling, and we answer this people, who have spoken to me, saying, Lighten [some] of the yoke that your father put on us?”
10 Les jeunes gens qui avaient grandi avec lui lui dirent: « Dis à ces gens qui t'ont parlé en disant: « Ton père a rendu notre joug lourd, mais allège-le pour nous », dis-leur: « Mon petit doigt est plus gros que la taille de mon père.
And they speak to him—the boys who had grown up with him—saying, “Thus you say to this people who have spoken to you, saying, Your father made our yoke heavy, and you, make [it] light on us; thus you speak to them, My little [finger] is thicker than the loins of my father;
11 Mon père vous a chargé d'un joug lourd, mais moi, je vais ajouter à votre joug. Mon père vous a châtiés avec des fouets, mais moi, je vous châtierai avec des scorpions.'"
and now, my father laid a heavy yoke on you, and I add to your yoke; my father disciplined you with whips, and I discipline you with scorpions.”
12 Jéroboam et tout le peuple se présentèrent à Roboam le troisième jour, comme le roi le leur avait demandé, en disant: « Revenez me voir le troisième jour. »
And they come—Jeroboam and all the people—to Rehoboam, on the third day, as the king had spoken, saying, “Come back to me on the third day.”
13 Le roi répondit durement au peuple, abandonna le conseil des vieillards qu'ils lui avaient donné,
And the king answers the people sharply, and forsakes the counsel of the elderly which they counseled him,
14 et leur parla selon le conseil des jeunes gens, en disant: « Mon père a rendu votre joug pesant, mais moi, j'ajouterai à votre joug. Mon père vous a châtiés avec des fouets, mais moi je vous châtierai avec des scorpions. »
and speaks to them, according to the counsel of the boys, saying, “My father made your yoke heavy, and I add to your yoke; my father disciplined you with whips, and I discipline you with scorpions”;
15 Et le roi n'écouta pas le peuple, car c'était une chose provoquée par l'Éternel, afin d'affermir sa parole, que l'Éternel avait dite par Achija de Silo à Jéroboam, fils de Nebath.
and the king did not listen to the people, for the revolution was from YHWH, in order to establish His word that YHWH spoke by the hand of Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam son of Nebat.
16 Lorsque tout Israël vit que le roi ne les écoutait pas, le peuple prit la parole et dit au roi: « Quelle part avons-nous en David? Nous n'avons pas d'héritage dans le fils de Jessé. À tes tentes, Israël! Occupe-toi maintenant de ta propre maison, David. » Et Israël s'en alla vers ses tentes.
And all Israel sees that the king has not listened to them, and the people send the king back word, saying, “What portion do we have in David? Indeed, there is no inheritance in the son of Jesse; [return] to your tents, O Israel; now see your house, O David!” And Israel goes to its tents.
17 Mais quant aux enfants d'Israël qui habitaient dans les villes de Juda, Roboam régnait sur eux.
As for the sons of Israel, those dwelling in the cities of Judah—Rehoboam reigns over them.
18 Alors le roi Roboam envoya Adoram, qui était à la tête des hommes soumis au travail forcé, et tout Israël le lapida à mort. Le roi Roboam se hâta de monter sur son char, pour fuir à Jérusalem.
And King Rehoboam sends Adoram who [is] over the tribute, and all Israel casts stones at him, and he dies; and King Rehoboam has strengthened himself to go up into a chariot to flee to Jerusalem;
19 Ainsi Israël s'est rebellé contre la maison de David jusqu'à ce jour.
and Israel transgresses against the house of David to this day.
20 Lorsque tout Israël apprit que Jéroboam était de retour, ils l'envoyèrent appeler à l'assemblée et l'établirent roi sur tout Israël. Il n'y eut personne qui suivit la maison de David, sauf la tribu de Juda seulement.
And it comes to pass, at all Israel hearing that Jeroboam has returned, that they send and call him to the congregation, and cause him to reign over all Israel; none has been after the house of David except the tribe of Judah alone.
21 Lorsque Roboam fut arrivé à Jérusalem, il rassembla toute la maison de Juda et la tribu de Benjamin, cent quatre-vingt mille hommes d'élite qui étaient des guerriers, pour combattre la maison d'Israël, afin de ramener la royauté à Roboam, fils de Salomon.
And Rehoboam comes to Jerusalem, and assembles all the house of Judah and the tribe of Benjamin, one hundred and eighty thousand chosen warriors, to fight with the house of Israel, to bring back the kingdom to Rehoboam son of Solomon.
22 Mais la parole de Dieu fut adressée à Shemaya, homme de Dieu, en ces termes:
And the word of God is to Shemaiah a man of God, saying,
23 « Parle à Roboam, fils de Salomon, roi de Juda, à toute la maison de Juda et de Benjamin, et au reste du peuple, et dis-lui:
“Speak to Rehoboam son of Solomon, king of Judah, and to all the house of Judah and Benjamin, and the rest of the people, saying,
24 « Yahvé dit: Vous ne monterez pas et vous ne combattrez pas contre vos frères, les enfants d'Israël. Chacun retournera dans sa maison, car cette chose vient de moi. »" Ils écoutèrent donc la parole de Yahvé, s'en retournèrent et poursuivirent leur chemin, selon la parole de Yahvé.
Thus said YHWH: You do not go up nor fight with your brothers the sons of Israel; let each return to his house, for this thing has been from Me”; and they hear the word of YHWH, and turn back to go according to the word of YHWH.
25 Jéroboam bâtit Sichem dans la montagne d'Ephraïm, et il y habita; puis il sortit de là et bâtit Penuel.
And Jeroboam builds Shechem in the hill-country of Ephraim, and dwells in it, and goes out there, and builds Penuel;
26 Jéroboam disait en son cœur: « Maintenant le royaume va revenir à la maison de David.
and Jeroboam says in his heart, “Now the kingdom turns back to the house of David—
27 Si ce peuple monte pour offrir des sacrifices dans la maison de l'Éternel à Jérusalem, le cœur de ce peuple se tournera de nouveau vers son seigneur, vers Roboam, roi de Juda; il me tuera et reviendra à Roboam, roi de Juda. »
if this people goes up to make sacrifices in the house of YHWH in Jerusalem, then the heart of this people has turned back to their lord, to Rehoboam king of Judah, and they have slain me, and turned back to Rehoboam king of Judah.”
28 Le roi tint conseil et fit deux veaux d'or, et il leur dit: « C'est trop pour vous de monter à Jérusalem. Regardez et contemplez vos dieux, Israël, qui vous ont fait monter du pays d'Égypte! »
And the king takes counsel, and makes two calves of gold, and says to them, “Enough of you from going up to Jerusalem; behold, your gods, O Israel, which brought you up out of the land of Egypt.”
29 Il plaça l'un à Béthel, et l'autre à Dan.
And he sets the one in Beth-El, and the other he has put in Dan,
30 Cela devint un péché, car le peuple alla jusqu'à Dan pour se prosterner devant celui qui était là.
and this thing becomes a sin, and the people go before the one—to Dan.
31 Il fit des maisons de hauts lieux et établit des prêtres parmi tout le peuple, qui n'étaient pas des fils de Lévi.
And he makes the house of high places, and makes priests from the extremities of the people, who were not of the sons of Levi;
32 Jéroboam institua une fête au huitième mois, le quinzième jour du mois, comme la fête qui a lieu en Juda, et il monta à l'autel. Il le fit à Béthel, en sacrifiant aux veaux qu'il avait faits, et il plaça à Béthel les prêtres des hauts lieux qu'il avait faits.
and Jeroboam makes a festival in the eighth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, like the festival that [is] in Judah, and he offers on the altar—so he did in Beth-El—to sacrifice to the calves which he made, and he has appointed in Beth-El the priests of the high places that he made.
33 Il monta à l'autel qu'il avait fait à Béthel, le quinzième jour du huitième mois, au mois qu'il avait choisi de son propre cœur; il donna une fête aux enfants d'Israël, et il monta à l'autel pour brûler des parfums.
And he offers up on the altar that he made in Beth-El, on the fifteenth day of the eighth month, in the month that he devised from his own heart, and he makes a festival for the sons of Israel, and offers on the altar—to make incense.
