1 Mutta kun Aradin kuningas, kanaanilainen, joka asui Etelämaassa, kuuli, että Israel oli tulossa Atarimin tietä, ryhtyi hän sotimaan Israelia vastaan ja otti muutamia heistä vangiksi.
And when the Canaanite, the king of 'Arad, who dwelt in the south, heard that Israel was coming by the way of the spies: he made an attack on Israel, and took from them some prisoners.
2 Silloin Israel teki lupauksen Herralle ja sanoi: "Jos sinä annat tämän kansan minun käsiini, niin minä vihin sen kaupungit tuhon omiksi".
And Israel made a vow unto the Lord, and said, If thou wilt but deliver this people into my hand, then will I devote their cities.
3 Ja Herra kuuli, mitä Israel lausui, ja jätti kanaanilaiset hänen käsiinsä. Niin Israel vihki heidät ja heidän kaupunkinsa tuhon omiksi. Ja sen paikan nimeksi pantiin Horma.
And the Lord hearkened to the voice of Israel, and he delivered up the Canaanites; and they devoted them and their cities: and they called the name of the place Chormah.
4 Senjälkeen he lähtivät liikkeelle Hoorin vuorelta Kaislameren tietä kiertääksensä Edomin maan. Mutta matkalla kansa kävi kärsimättömäksi.
And they set forward from mount Hor by the way to the Red Sea, to go round the land of Edom: and the spirit of the people became impatient because of the way.
5 Ja kansa puhui Jumalaa ja Moosesta vastaan: "Minkätähden te johdatitte meidät pois Egyptistä kuolemaan erämaahan? Eihän täällä ole leipää eikä vettä, ja me olemme kyllästyneet tähän huonoon ruokaan."
And the people spoke against God, and against Moses, Wherefore have ye brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? for there is no bread, and there is no water; and our soul loatheth this miserable bread.
6 Silloin Herra lähetti kansan sekaan myrkkykäärmeitä, jotka purivat kansaa, niin että paljon kansaa Israelista kuoli.
And the Lord let loose against the people poisonous serpents, and they bit the people; and there died much people of Israel.
7 Niin kansa tuli Mooseksen luo, ja he sanoivat: "Me teimme syntiä, kun puhuimme Herraa ja sinua vastaan. Rukoile Herraa, että hän poistaa käärmeet meidän kimpustamme." Ja Mooses rukoili kansan puolesta.
And the people then came to Moses, and they said, We have sinned, for we have spoken against the Lord, and against thee; pray unto the Lord, that he take away from us the serpents. And Moses prayed for the people.
8 Silloin Herra sanoi Moosekselle: "Tee itsellesi käärme ja pane se tangon päähän, niin jokainen purtu, joka siihen katsoo, jää eloon".
And the Lord said unto Moses, Make thyself a serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that whoever is bitten shall look at it, and he shall live.
9 Niin Mooses teki vaskikäärmeen ja pani sen tangon päähän; jos ketä käärmeet sitten purivat ja tämä katsoi vaskikäärmeeseen, niin hän jäi eloon.
And Moses made a serpent of copper, and put it upon a pole; and it came to pass, that, when a serpent had bitten any man, and he looked up to the serpent of copper, he remained alive.
10 Sitten israelilaiset lähtivät liikkeelle ja leiriytyivät Oobotiin.
And the children of Israel set forward, and encamped in Oboth.
11 Ja he lähtivät liikkeelle Oobotista ja leiriytyivät Iije-Abarimiin siinä erämaassa, joka on Mooabista itään, auringon nousun puolella.
And they journeyed from Oboth, and encamped at 'Iye-ha'abarim, in the wilderness, which is before Moab, toward the rising of the sun.
12 Sieltä he lähtivät liikkeelle ja leiriytyivät Seredin laaksoon.
From there they set forward and encamped in the valley of Zered.
13 Sieltä he lähtivät liikkeelle ja leiriytyivät erämaahan tuolle puolelle Arnon-jokea, joka lähtee amorilaisten alueelta; sillä Arnon on Mooabin rajana Mooabin ja amorilaisten maan välillä.
From there they set forward, and encamped on the other side of Arnon, which is in the wilderness, and which cometh out of the boundary of the Emorites; for Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and between the Emorites.
14 Sentähden sanotaan "Herran sotien kirjassa": "Vaaheb Suufassa ja Arnonin laaksot
Therefore mention is made in the book of the wars of the Lord, of Vaheb in Supha, and of the brooks of Arnon,
15 ja laaksojen rinteet, jotka ulottuvat Aarin tienoille ja kallistuvat Mooabin rajaan".
And the descent of the brooks, that turneth toward Shebeth-'Ar, and leaneth upon the border of Moab;
16 Ja sieltä he kulkivat Beeriin. Se oli se kaivo, josta Herra oli sanonut Moosekselle: "Kokoa kansa, niin minä annan heille vettä".
And from there to the well; this is the well where the Lord said unto Moses, Assemble the people and I will give them water.
17 Silloin lauloi Israel tämän laulun: "Kuohu, kaivo! -laulakaa sille laulu-
Then did Israel sing this song, Come up, O well; sing ye unto it:
18 kaivo, jonka ruhtinaat kaivoivat, kansan parhaat koversivat valtikallaan, sauvoillansa!" Ja siitä erämaasta he kulkivat Mattanaan
Well, which the princes have dug, which the nobles of the people have hollowed out with the sceptre, with their staves; — and from the wilderness to Mattanah;
19 ja Mattanasta Nahalieliin ja Nahalielista Baamotiin
And from Mattanah to Nachaliel; and from Nachaliel to Bamoth;
20 ja Baamotista siihen laaksoon, joka on Mooabin maassa, Pisgan huipun juurella, joka kohoaa yli erämaan.
And from Bamoth to the valley, which is in the fields of Moab, to the top of Pisgah, which looketh toward the desert.
21 Ja Israel lähetti sanansaattajat Siihonin, amorilaisten kuninkaan, tykö sanomaan:
And Israel sent messengers unto Sichon the king of the Emorites, saying,
22 "Salli minun kulkea maasi läpi. Me emme poikkea pelloille emmekä viinitarhoihin emmekä juo vettä kaivoista. Valtatietä me kuljemme, kunnes olemme päässeet sinun alueesi läpi."
Let me pass through thy land; we will not turn aside into field, or into vineyard; we will not drink the water of a well: by the king's highway will we go along, until we have passed thy border.
23 Mutta Siihon ei sallinut Israelin kulkea alueensa läpi, vaan kokosi kaiken väkensä ja lähti Israelia vastaan erämaahan. Ja kun hän oli tullut Jahaaseen, ryhtyi hän taisteluun Israelia vastaan.
But Sichon would not suffer Israel to pass through his border; and Sichon assembled all his people together; and went out against Israel into the wilderness; and he came to Yahaz, and fought against Israel.
24 Mutta Israel voitti hänet miekan terällä ja valloitti hänen maansa Arnonista Jabbokiin, aina ammonilaisten maahan asti, sillä ammonilaisten raja oli varustettu.
And Israel smote him with the edge of the sword, and took possession of his land from Arnon unto Yabbok, even unto the children of 'Ammon; for the border of the children of 'Ammon was strong.
25 Ja Israel valtasi sieltä kaikki kaupungit; ja Israel asettui kaikkiin amorilaisten kaupunkeihin, Hesboniin ja kaikkiin sen tytärkaupunkeihin.
And Israel took all these cities; and Israel dwelt in all the cities of the Emorites, in Cheshbon, and in all the villages thereof.
26 Sillä Hesbon oli amorilaisten kuninkaan Siihonin kaupunki; hän oli näet käynyt sotaa entistä Mooabin kuningasta vastaan sekä vallannut häneltä kaiken hänen maansa Arnoniin asti.
For Cheshbon was the city of Sichon the king of the Emorites; and he had fought against the former king of Moab, and taken all his land out of his hand, up to the Arnon.
27 Sentähden runosepät sanovat: "Tulkaa Hesboniin! Rakennettakoon ja varustettakoon Siihonin kaupunki.
Therefore said the poets, Come into Cheshbon, let the city of Sichon be built and established.
28 Sillä tuli lähti Hesbonista, liekki Siihonin kaupungista; se kulutti Aar-Mooabin, Arnonin kukkulain valtiaat.
For a fire is gone out of Cheshbon, a flame from the city of Sichon: it hath consumed 'Ar-Moab, the men of the high places of the Arnon.
29 Voi sinua, Mooab! Sinä hukuit, Kemoksen kansa! Poikiensa hän salli tulla pakolaisiksi, tytärtensä amorilaisten kuninkaan Siihonin vangeiksi.
Woe to thee, Moab! thou art lost, O people of Kemosh: he hath suffered his sons to become fugitives, and his daughters to go into captivity, unto the king of the Emorites, Sichon.
30 Me ammuimme heidät, Hesbon kukistui Diibonia myöten; me hävitimme Noofahiin asti, aina Meedebaan saakka."
We have thrown them down; lost is Cheshbon even unto Dibon, and we have laid waste [all] up to Nophach, which reacheth unto Medeba.
31 Niin Israel asettui amorilaisten maahan.
Thus Israel dwelt in the land of the Emorites.
32 Ja Mooses lähetti vakoilemaan Jaeseria, ja he valloittivat sen tytärkaupungit; ja hän karkoitti amorilaiset, jotka siellä olivat.
And Moses sent to spy out Ya'zer, and they captured the villages thereof, and drove out the Emorites that were there.
33 Sitten he kääntyivät toisaalle ja kulkivat Baasanin tietä. Silloin lähti Oog, Baasanin kuningas, heitä vastaan, hän ja kaikki hänen väkensä, Edreihin taistelemaan.
And they turned and went up by the way to Bashan; and 'Og, the king of Bashan, went out against them, he, and all his people, to the battle at Edrei.
34 Mutta Herra sanoi Moosekselle: "Älä pelkää häntä, sillä minä annan sinun käteesi hänet ja kaiken hänen kansansa ja maansa. Ja tee hänelle, niinkuin teit Siihonille, amorilaisten kuninkaalle, joka asui Hesbonissa."
And the Lord said unto Moses, Fear him not; for into thy hand have I delivered him, and all his people, and his land; and thou shalt do unto him as thou hast done unto Sichon, the king of the Emorites, who dwelt at Cheshbon.
35 Ja he voittivat hänet ja hänen poikansa ja kaiken hänen väkensä, päästämättä pakoon ainoatakaan. Niin he valloittivat hänen maansa.
And they smote him and his sons, and all his people, until there was none left unto him that escaped; and they took possession of his land.
