1 Veljeni, älköön teidän uskonne meidän kirkastettuun Herraamme, Jeesukseen Kristukseen, olko sellainen, joka katsoo henkilöön.
My brothers, practice your faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, without showing partiality.
2 Sillä jos kokoukseenne tulee mies, kultasormus sormessa ja loistavassa puvussa, ja tulee myös köyhä ryysyissä,
Suppose a man in fine clothing comes into your assembly wearing a gold ring, and a poor man in filthy clothing also comes in.
3 ja te katsotte loistavapukuisen puoleen ja sanotte: "Istu sinä tähän mukavasti", ja köyhälle sanotte: "Seiso sinä tuossa", tahi: "Istu tähän jalkajakkarani viereen",
If you pay attention to the man who is wearing fine clothing and say to him, “Yoʋ sit here in a good place,” but you say to the poor man, “Yoʋ stand there, or sit here under my footstool,”
4 niin ettekö ole joutuneet ristiriitaan itsenne kanssa, ja eikö teistä ole tullut väärämielisiä tuomareita?
have you not made distinctions among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?
5 Kuulkaa, rakkaat veljeni. Eikö Jumala ole valinnut niitä, jotka maailman silmissä ovat köyhiä, olemaan rikkaita uskossa ja sen valtakunnan perillisiä, jonka hän on luvannut niille, jotka häntä rakastavat?
Listen, my beloved brothers, has not God chosen the poor of the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom that he has promised to those who love him?
6 Mutta te olette häväisseet köyhän. Eivätkö juuri rikkaat teitä sorra, ja eivätkö juuri he vedä teitä tuomioistuimien eteen?
But you have dishonored the poor man. Is it not the rich who oppress you? Are they not the ones who drag you into court?

Do they not blaspheme the good name by which you are called?
8 Vaan jos täytätte kuninkaallisen lain Raamatun mukaan: "Rakasta lähimmäistäsi niinkuin itseäsi", niin te hyvin teette;
If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, “Yoʋ shall love yoʋr neighbor as yoʋrself,” you do well.
9 mutta jos te henkilöön katsotte, niin teette syntiä, ja laki näyttää teille, että olette lainrikkojia.
But if you show partiality, you commit sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors.
10 Sillä joka pitää koko lain, mutta rikkoo yhtä kohtaa vastaan, se on syypää kaikissa kohdin.
For whoever keeps the entire law but stumbles in one point has become guilty of it all.
11 Sillä hän, joka on sanonut: "Älä tee huorin", on myös sanonut: "Älä tapa"; jos et teekään huorin, mutta tapat, olet lainrikkoja.
For he who said, “Yoʋ shall not commit adultery,” also said, “Yoʋ shall not murder.” Now if yoʋ do not commit adultery but do commit murder, yoʋ have become a transgressor of the law.
12 Puhukaa niin ja tehkää niin kuin ne, jotka vapauden laki on tuomitseva.
Speak and act as those who will be judged by the law of liberty.
13 Sillä tuomio on laupeudeton sille, joka ei ole laupeutta tehnyt; laupeudelle tuomio koituu kerskaukseksi.
For judgment is without mercy to anyone who has not shown mercy; mercy triumphs over judgment.
14 Mitä hyötyä, veljeni, siitä on, jos joku sanoo itsellään olevan uskon, mutta hänellä ei ole tekoja? Ei kaiketi usko voi häntä pelastaa?
What is the benefit, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him?
15 Jos veli tai sisar on alaston ja jokapäiväistä ravintoa vailla
If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacks daily food,
16 ja joku teistä sanoo heille: "Menkää rauhassa, lämmitelkää ja ravitkaa itsenne", mutta ette anna heille ruumiin tarpeita, niin mitä hyötyä siitä on?
and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them anything to address their physical needs, what is the benefit?
17 Samoin uskokin, jos sillä ei ole tekoja, on itsessään kuollut.
In the same way faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.
18 Joku ehkä sanoo: "Sinulla on usko, ja minulla on teot"; näytä sinä minulle uskosi ilman tekoja, niin minä teoistani näytän sinulle uskon.
But someone will say, “Yoʋ have faith, and I have works.” Show me yoʋr faith by yoʋr works, and I, by my works, will show yoʋ my faith.
19 Sinä uskot, että Jumala on yksi. Siinä teet oikein; riivaajatkin sen uskovat ja vapisevat.
Yoʋ believe that God is one; yoʋ do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder!
20 Mutta tahdotko tietää, sinä turha ihminen, että usko ilman tekoja on voimaton?
Do yoʋ want to be shown, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead?
21 Eikö Aabraham, meidän isämme, tullut vanhurskaaksi teoista, kun vei poikansa Iisakin uhrialttarille?
Was not our father Abraham justified by works when he offered his son Isaac on the altar?
22 Sinä näet, että usko vaikutti hänen tekojensa mukana, ja teoista usko tuli täydelliseksi;
Do yoʋ see how faith was active along with his works, and by works his faith was brought to completion?
23 ja niin toteutui Raamatun sana: "Aabraham uskoi Jumalaa, ja se luettiin hänelle vanhurskaudeksi", ja häntä sanottiin Jumalan ystäväksi.
And the Scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness,” and he was called a friend of God.
24 Te näette, että ihminen tulee vanhurskaaksi teoista eikä ainoastaan uskosta.
You see then that a person is justified by works, and not by faith alone.
25 Eikö samoin myös portto Raahab tullut vanhurskaaksi teoista, kun hän otti lähettiläät luokseen ja päästi heidät toista tietä pois?
In the same way, was not Rahab the prostitute also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out by another way?
26 Sillä niinkuin ruumis ilman henkeä on kuollut, niin myös usko ilman tekoja on kuollut.
For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is also dead.
