1 Mooseksen 11
1 Ja kaikessa maassa oli yksi kieli ja yksi puheenparsi.
And the whole earth had one language, and the same words.
2 Kun he lähtivät liikkeelle itään päin, löysivät he lakeuden Sinearin maassa ja asettuivat sinne.
And it came to pass as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar, and dwelt there.
3 Ja he sanoivat toisillensa: "Tulkaa, tehkäämme tiiliä ja polttakaamme ne koviksi". Ja tiiltä he käyttivät kivenä, ja maapihkaa he käyttivät laastina.
And they said one to another, Come on, let us make bricks, and burn [them] thoroughly. And they had brick for stone, and they had asphalt for mortar.
4 Ja he sanoivat: "Tulkaa, rakentakaamme itsellemme kaupunki ja torni, jonka huippu ulottuu taivaaseen, ja tehkäämme itsellemme nimi, ettemme hajaantuisi yli kaiken maan".
And they said, Come on, let us build ourselves a city and a tower, the top of which [may reach] to the heavens; and let us make ourselves a name, lest we be scattered over the face of the whole earth.
5 Niin Herra astui alas katsomaan kaupunkia ja tornia, jonka ihmislapset olivat rakentaneet.
And Jehovah came down to see the city and the tower which the children of men built.
6 Ja Herra sanoi: "Katso, he ovat yksi kansa, ja heillä kaikilla on yksi kieli, ja tämä on heidän ensimmäinen yrityksensä. Ja nyt ei heille ole mahdotonta mikään, mitä aikovatkin tehdä.
And Jehovah said, Behold, the people is one, and have all one language; and this have they begun to do. And now will they be hindered in nothing that they meditate doing.
7 Tulkaa, astukaamme alas ja sekoittakaamme siellä heidän kielensä, niin ettei toinen ymmärrä toisen kieltä."
Come, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech.
8 Ja niin Herra hajotti heidät sieltä yli kaiken maan, niin että he lakkasivat kaupunkia rakentamasta.
And Jehovah scattered them thence over the face of the whole earth. And they left off building the city.
9 Siitä tuli sen nimeksi Baabel, koska Herra siellä sekoitti kaiken maan kielen; ja sieltä Herra hajotti heidät yli kaiken maan.
Therefore was its name called Babel; because Jehovah there confounded the language of the whole earth. And Jehovah scattered them thence over the face of the whole earth.
10 Tämä on kertomus Seemin suvusta. Kun Seem oli sadan vuoden vanha, syntyi hänelle Arpaksad kaksi vuotta vedenpaisumuksen jälkeen.
These are the generations of Shem. Shem was a hundred years old, and begot Arphaxad two years after the flood.
11 Ja Seem eli Arpaksadin syntymän jälkeen viisisataa vuotta, ja hänelle syntyi poikia ja tyttäriä.
And Shem lived after he had begotten Arphaxad five hundred years, and begot sons and daughters.
12 Kun Arpaksad oli kolmenkymmenen viiden vuoden vanha, syntyi hänelle Selah.
And Arphaxad lived thirty-five years, and begot Shelah.
13 Ja Arpaksad eli Selahin syntymän jälkeen neljäsataa kolme vuotta, ja hänelle syntyi poikia ja tyttäriä.
And Arphaxad lived after he had begotten Shelah four hundred and three years, and begot sons and daughters.
14 Kun Selah oli kolmenkymmenen vuoden vanha, syntyi hänelle Eeber.
And Shelah lived thirty years, and begot Eber.
15 Ja Selah eli Eeberin syntymän jälkeen neljäsataa kolme vuotta, ja hänelle syntyi poikia ja tyttäriä.
And Shelah lived after he had begotten Eber four hundred and three years, and begot sons and daughters.
16 Kun Eeber oli kolmenkymmenen neljän vuoden vanha, syntyi hänelle Peleg.
And Eber lived thirty-four years, and begot Peleg.
17 Ja Eeber eli Pelegin syntymän jälkeen neljäsataa kolmekymmentä vuotta, ja hänelle syntyi poikia ja tyttäriä.
And Eber lived after he had begotten Peleg four hundred and thirty years, and begot sons and daughters.
18 Kun Peleg oli kolmenkymmenen vuoden vanha, syntyi hänelle Regu.
And Peleg lived thirty years, and begot Reu.
19 Ja Peleg eli Regun syntymän jälkeen kaksisataa yhdeksän vuotta, ja hänelle syntyi poikia ja tyttäriä.
And Peleg lived after he had begotten Reu two hundred and nine years, and begot sons and daughters.
20 Kun Regu oli kolmenkymmenen kahden vuoden vanha, syntyi hänelle Serug.
And Reu lived thirty-two years, and begot Serug.
21 Ja Regu eli Serugin syntymän jälkeen kaksisataa seitsemän vuotta, ja hänelle syntyi poikia ja tyttäriä.
And Reu lived after he had begotten Serug two hundred and seven years, and begot sons and daughters.
22 Kun Serug oli kolmenkymmenen vuoden vanha, syntyi hänelle Naahor.
And Serug lived thirty years, and begot Nahor.
23 Ja Serug eli Naahorin syntymän jälkeen kaksisataa vuotta, ja hänelle syntyi poikia ja tyttäriä.
And Serug lived after he had begotten Nahor two hundred years, and begot sons and daughters.
24 Kun Naahor oli kahdenkymmenen yhdeksän vuoden vanha, syntyi hänelle Terah.
And Nahor lived twenty-nine years, and begot Terah.
25 Ja Naahor eli Terahin syntymän jälkeen sata yhdeksäntoista vuotta, ja hänelle syntyi poikia ja tyttäriä.
And Nahor lived after he had begotten Terah a hundred and nineteen years, and begot sons and daughters.
26 Kun Terah oli seitsemänkymmenen vuoden vanha, syntyivät hänelle Abram, Naahor ja Haaran.
And Terah lived seventy years, and begot Abram, Nahor, and Haran.
27 Ja tämä on kertomus Terahin suvusta. Terahille syntyivät Abram, Naahor ja Haaran. Ja Haaranille syntyi Loot.
And these are the generations of Terah: Terah begot Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran begot Lot.
28 Ja Haaran kuoli ennen isäänsä Terahia synnyinmaassansa, Kaldean Uurissa.
And Haran died before the face of his father Terah in the land of his nativity at Ur of the Chaldeans.
29 Ja Abram ja Naahor ottivat itsellensä vaimot; Abramin vaimon nimi oli Saarai, ja Naahorin vaimon nimi oli Milka, Haaranin tytär; Haaran oli Milkan ja Jiskan isä.
And Abram and Nahor took wives: the name of Abram's wife was Sarai; and the name of Nahor's wife, Milcah, a daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah and the father of Iscah.
30 Mutta Saarai oli hedelmätön, hänellä ei ollut lasta.
And Sarai was barren: she had no child.
31 Ja Terah otti poikansa Abramin ja poikansa pojan Lootin, Haaranin pojan, ja miniänsä Saarain, poikansa Abramin vaimon, ja he lähtivät heidän kanssaan Kaldean Uurista mennäksensä Kanaanin maahan, ja he saapuivat Harraniin asti ja asuivat siellä.
And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran his son's son, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son Abram's wife; and they went forth together out of Ur of the Chaldeans, to go into the land of Canaan, and came as far as Haran, and dwelt there.
32 Ja Terahin ikä oli kaksisataa viisi vuotta; sitten Terah kuoli Harranissa.
And the days of Terah were two hundred and five years; and Terah died in Haran.
