1 Kaikella on määräaika, ja aikansa on joka asialla taivaan alla.
Alle thingis han tyme, and alle thingis vndur sunne passen bi her spaces.
2 Aika on syntyä ja aika kuolla. Aika on istuttaa ja aika repiä istutus.
Tyme of birthe, and time of diyng; tyme to plaunte, and tyme to drawe vp that that is plauntid.
3 Aika on surmata ja aika parantaa. Aika on purkaa ja aika rakentaa.
Tyme to sle, and tyme to make hool; tyme to distrie, and tyme to bilde.
4 Aika on itkeä ja aika nauraa. Aika on valittaa ja aika hypellä.
Tyme to wepe, and tyme to leiye; tyme to biweile, and tyme to daunse.
5 Aika on heitellä kiviä ja aika kerätä kivet. Aika on syleillä ja aika olla syleilemättä.
Tyme to scatere stoonys, and tyme to gadere togidere; tyme to colle, and tyme to be fer fro collyngis.
6 Aika on etsiä ja aika kadottaa. Aika on säilyttää ja aika viskata pois.
Tyme to wynne, and tyme to leese; tyme to kepe, and tyme to caste awei.
7 Aika on reväistä rikki ja aika ommella yhteen. Aika on olla vaiti ja aika puhua.
Tyme to kitte, and tyme to sewe togidere; tyme to be stille, and tyme to speke.
8 Aika on rakastaa ja aika vihata. Aika on sodalla ja aika rauhalla.
Tyme of loue, and tyme of hatrede; tyme of batel, and tyme of pees.
9 Mitä hyötyä on työntekijällä siitä, mistä hän näkee vaivaa?
What hath a man more of his trauel?
10 Minä olen katsonut sitä työtä, minkä Jumala on antanut ihmislapsille, heidän sillä itseään rasittaaksensa.
I siy the turment, which God yaf to the sones of men, that thei be occupied therynne.
11 Kaiken hän on tehnyt kauniisti aikanansa, myös iankaikkisuuden hän on pannut heidän sydämeensä; mutta niin on, ettei ihminen käsitä tekoja, jotka Jumala on tehnyt, ei alkua eikä loppua.
God made alle thingis good in her tyme, and yaf the world to disputyng of hem, that a man fynde not the werk which God hath wrouyt fro the bigynnyng `til in to the ende.
12 Minä tulin tietämään, ettei heillä ole muuta onnea kuin iloita ja tehdä hyvää eläessänsä.
And Y knew that no thing was betere `to a man, `no but to be glad, and to do good werkis in his lijf.
13 Mutta jokaiselle ihmiselle on sekin, että hän syö ja juo ja nauttii hyvää kaiken vaivannäkönsä ohessa, Jumalan lahja.
For whi ech man that etith and drinkith, and seeth good of his trauel; this is the yifte of God.
14 Minä tulin tietämään, että kaikki, mitä Jumala tekee, pysyy iäti. Ei ole siihen lisäämistä eikä siitä vähentämistä. Ja Jumala on sen niin tehnyt, että häntä peljättäisiin.
I haue lerned that alle werkis, whiche God made, lasten stidfastli `til in to with outen ende; we moun not adde ony thing to tho, nether take awei fro tho thingis, whiche God made, that he be dred.
15 Mitä nyt on, sitä on ollut jo ennenkin; ja mitä vasta on oleva, sitä on ollut jo ennenkin. Jumala etsii jälleen sen, mikä on mennyttä.
That thing that is maad, dwellith perfitli; tho thingis that schulen come, weren bifore; and God restorith that, that is goon.
16 Vielä minä näin auringon alla oikeuspaikan, ja siinä oli vääryys, ja vanhurskauden paikan, ja siinä oli vääryys.
I siy vndur sunne vnfeithfulnesse in the place of doom; and wickidnesse in the place of riytfulnesse.
17 Minä sanoin sydämessäni: Vanhurskaan ja väärän tuomitsee Jumala, sillä siellä on jokaisella asialla ja jokaisella teolla aikansa.
And Y seide in myn herte, The Lord schal deme a iust man, and an vnfeithful man; and the tyme of ech thing schal be thanne.
18 Minä sanoin sydämessäni: Ihmislasten tähden se niin on, jotta Jumala heitä koettelisi ja he tulisivat näkemään, että he omassa olossaan ovat eläimiä.
I seide in myn herte of the sones of men, that God schulde preue hem, and schewe that thei ben lijk vnresonable beestis.
19 Sillä ihmislasten käy niinkuin eläintenkin; sama on kumpienkin kohtalo. Niinkuin toiset kuolevat, niin toisetkin kuolevat; yhtäläinen henki on kaikilla. Ihmisillä ei ole mitään etua eläinten edellä, sillä kaikki on turhuutta.
Therfor oon is the perisching of man and of beestis, and euene condicioun is of euer eithir; as a man dieth, `so and tho beestis dien; alle beestis brethen in lijk maner, and a man hath no thing more than a beeste.
20 Kaikki menee samaan paikkaan. Kaikki on tomusta tullut, ja kaikki palajaa tomuun.
Alle thingis ben suget to vanyte, and alle thingis goen to o place; tho ben maad of erthe, and tho turnen ayen togidere in to erthe.
21 Kuka tietää ihmisen hengestä, kohoaako se ylös, ja eläimen hengestä, vajoaako se alas maahan?
Who knowith, if the spirit of the sones of Adam stieth vpward, and if the spirit of beestis goith dounward?
22 Niin minä tulin näkemään, että ei ole mitään parempaa, kuin että ihminen iloitsee teoistansa, sillä se on hänen osansa. Sillä kuka tuo hänet takaisin näkemään iloksensa sitä, mikä tulee hänen jälkeensä?
And Y perseyuede that no thing is betere, than that a man be glad in his werk, and that this be his part; for who schal brynge hym, that he knowe thingis that schulen come after hym?
