1 Jumalatoin pakenee, ja ei kenkään aja häntä takaa; vaan jumalinen on rohkia niinkuin nuori jalopeura.
The wicked flee when no man pursueth; but the righteous are bold as a lion.
2 Maakunnan synnin tähden tulee valtakuntaan monta päämiestä; vaan toimellisten ja ymmärtäväisten ihmisten tähden pysyy se kauvan.
By the transgression of a land many are the princes thereof; but by a man of understanding [and] of knowledge, [its] stability is prolonged.
3 Nälkäinen, joka köyhiä vaivaa, on niinkuin sadekuuro, joka hedelmän turmelee.
A poor man who oppresseth the helpless is a sweeping rain which leaveth no food.
4 Jotka lain hylkäävät, ne ylistävät jumalattomia; vaan jotka lain kätkevät, ovat heille vihaiset.
They that forsake the law praise the wicked; but such as keep the law contend with them.
5 Ei pahat ihmiset oikeudesta lukua pidä; vaan jotka Herraa etsivät, he ottavat kaikista vaarin.
Evil men understand not judgment; but they that seek Jehovah understand everything.
6 Parempi on köyhä joka vakuudessansa vaeltaa, kuin rikas, joka väärillä teillä käyskentelee.
Better is the poor that walketh in his integrity, than he that is perverse, double in ways, though he be rich.
7 Joka lain kätkee, se on toimellinen lapsi; mutta joka tuhlaajaa ruokkii, se häpäisee isänsä.
Whoso observeth the law is a son that hath understanding; but he that is a companion of profligates bringeth shame to his father.
8 Joka tavaransa enentää korolla ja voitolla, se kokoo köyhäin tarpeeksi.
He that by usury and unjust gain increaseth his substance gathereth it for him that is gracious to the poor.
9 Joka korvansa kääntää pois lain kuulosta, hänen rukouksensakin on kauhistus.
He that turneth away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer is an abomination.
10 Joka jumaliset saattaa väärälle tielle, hän lankee omaan kuoppaansa; mutta hurskaat perivät hyvyyden.
Whoso causeth the upright to go astray in an evil way, shall himself fall into his own pit; but the perfect shall inherit good.
11 Rikas luulee itsensä viisaaksi, vaan toimellinen köyhä ymmärtää hänen.
A rich man is wise in his own eyes; but the poor that hath understanding searcheth him out.
12 Kuin vanhurskaat vallitsevat, niin käy sangen hyvin; vaan koska jumalattomat hallitsevat, niin muuttet ovat kansan seassa.
When the righteous triumph, there is great glory; but when the wicked rise, men conceal themselves.
13 Joka pahan tekonsa kieltää, ei hän menesty; vaan joka sen tunnustaa ja hylkää, hänelle tapahtuu laupius.
He that covereth his transgressions shall not prosper; but whoso confesseth and forsaketh [them] shall obtain mercy.
14 Autuas on se ihminen, joka aina pelkää; vaan joka sydämensä paaduttaa, se lankee onnettomuuteen.
Happy is the man that feareth always; but he that hardeneth his heart shall fall into evil.
15 Jumalatoin päämies, joka köyhää kansaa hallitsee, on kiljuva jalopeura ja ahne karhu.
A roaring lion, and a ranging bear, is a wicked ruler over a poor people.
16 Kuin hallitsia on ilman toimeta, niin paljon vääryyttä tapahtuu; vaan joka vihaa ahneutta, hän saa kauvan elää.
The prince void of intelligence is also a great oppressor: he that hateth covetousness shall prolong [his] days.
17 Ihminen, joka jonkun sielun veressä vääryyttä tekee, ei pääse, vaikka hän hamaan hautaan pakenis.
A man laden with the blood of [any] person, fleeth to the pit: let no man stay him.
18 Joka vakuudessa vaeltaa, se on tallessa; mutta joka käy pahaa tietä, hänen täytyy joskus langeta.
Whoso walketh in integrity shall be saved; but he that is perverted in [his] double ways, shall fall in one [of them].
19 Joka peltonsa viljelee, hän saa leipää yltäisesti; vaan joka pyytää joutilaana käydä, se ravitaan köyhyydellä.
He that tilleth his land shall be satisfied with bread; but he that followeth the worthless shall have poverty enough.
20 Uskollinen mies runsaasti siunataan; vaan joka pyrkii rikkauden perään, ei hän ole viaton.
A faithful man aboundeth with blessings; but he that maketh haste to be rich shall not be innocent.
21 Ei ole se hyvä, että joku katsoo muotoa; sillä ihminen taitaa tehdä leivän kappaleen tähden väärin.
To have respect of persons is not good; but for a piece of bread will a man transgress.
22 Joka äkisti rikkautta pyytää, ja on kade, hänelle tulee köyhyys, ettei hän tiedäkään.
He that hath an evil eye hasteth after wealth, and knoweth not that poverty shall come upon him.
23 Joka ihmistä rankaisee, hän löytää paremman ystävyyden kuin se, joka puhuu ymötämielin.
He that rebuketh a man shall afterwards find more favour than he that flattereth with the tongue.
24 Joka ottaa isältänsä ja äidiltänsä, ja sanoo; ei se ole synti, hän on hävittäjän kanssaveli.
Whoso robbeth his father and his mother, and saith, It is no transgression, the same is the companion of a destroyer.
25 Ylpiä ihminen saattaa riidan; mutta joka luottaa Herraan, hän kostuu.
He that is puffed up in soul exciteth contention; but he that relieth upon Jehovah shall be made fat.
26 Joka omaan sydämeensä uskaltaa, hän on tyhmä; mutta joka viisaudessa vaeltaa, hän vapahdetaan.
He that confideth in his own heart is a fool; but whoso walketh wisely, he shall be delivered.
27 Joka vaivaiselle antaa, ei häneltä puutu; vaan joka silmänsä hänestä kääntää, se tulee pahasti kirotuksi.
He that giveth unto the poor shall not lack; but he that withdraweth his eyes shall have many a curse.
28 Kuin jumalattomat tulevat, niin kansa itsensä kätkee; mutta kuin ne hukkuvat, niin vanhurskaat enenevät.
When the wicked rise, men hide themselves; but when they perish, the righteous increase.
