1 Koskas istus ja syöt jonkun herran kanssa, niin ota visu vaari, kuka edessäs on.
When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider diligently him that is before thee;
2 Ja pane veitsi kaulaas, jos sinä tahdot henkes pitää.
And put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite.
3 Älä himoitse hänen herkustansa; sillä se on petollinen leipä.
Be not desirous of his dainties; seeing they are deceitful meat.
4 Älä vaivaa sinuas tullakses rikkaksi, ja lakkaa sinun viisaudesta.
Weary not thyself to be rich; cease from thine own wisdom.
5 Älä lennätä silmiäs sen jälkeen, jota et sinä taida saada; sillä se tekee itsellensä siivet niinkuin kotka, ja lentää taivasta päin.
Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? for [riches] certainly make themselves wings, like an eagle that flieth toward heaven.
6 Älä syö leipää kateen kanssa, ja älä himoitse hänen hänen herkkuansa.
Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainties:
7 Sillä niinkuin hän itse sydämessänsä ajattelee, niin se on; hän sanoo sinulle: syö ja juo, ja ei kuitenkaan ole hänen mielensä sinun kanssas.
For as he reckoneth within himself, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.
8 Sinun palas, jotka syönyt olet, pitää sinun oksentaman, ja sinun ystävälliset puhees pitää hukkaan tuleman.
The morsel which thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up, and lose thy sweet words.
9 Älä puhu hullun korvissa; sillä hän katsoo sinun toimellisen puheen ylön.
Speak not in the hearing of a fool; for he will despise the wisdom of thy words.
10 Älä siirrä takaperin entisiä rajoja, ja älä mene orpoin pellolle.
Remove not the ancient landmark; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless:
11 Sillä heidän lunastajansa on voimallinen: hän toimittaa heidän asiansa sinua vastaan.
For their redeemer is strong; he shall plead their cause against thee.
12 Anna sydämes kuritukseen, ja korvas toimelliseen puheesen.
Apply thine heart unto instruction, and thine ears to the words of knowledge.
13 Älä lakkaa lasta kurittamasta; sillä jos sinä häntä vitsalla lyöt, niin ei hän kuole.
Withhold not correction from the child: [for] if thou beat him with the rod, he shall not die.
Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from Sheol. (Sheol h7585)
15 Poikani, jos sinä viisas olet, niin myös sydämeni iloitsee.
My son, if thine heart be wise, my heart shall be glad, even mine:
16 Ja minun munaskuuni ovat riemuiset, koska sinun huules puhuvat, mikä oikia on.
Yea, my reins shall rejoice, when thy lips speak right things.
17 Älköön sinun sydämes kiivoitelko syntisiä, vaan olkoon Herran pelvossa joka päivä.
Let not thine heart envy sinners: but [be thou] in the fear of the LORD all the day long:
18 Sillä se on sinulle viimein hyväksi, ja ei sinun odottamises puutu.
For surely there is a reward; and thy hope shall not be cut off.
19 Kuule, poikani, ja ole viisas, ja johdata sydämes tielle.
Hear thou, my son, and be wise, and guide thine heart in the way.
20 Älä ole juomarien ja syömärien seassa.
Be not among winebibbers; among gluttonous eaters of flesh:
21 Sillä juomarit ja syömärit köyhtyvät, ja unikeko pitää ryysyissä käymän.
For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe [a man] with rags.
22 Kuule isääs, joka sinun siittänyt on, ja älä katso äitiäs ylön, kuin hän vanhaksi tulee.
Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old.
23 Osta totuutta, ja älä sitä myy, niin myös viisautta, oppia ja ymmärrystä.
Buy the truth, and sell it not; [yea], wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.
24 Vanhurskaan isä suuresti riemuitsee; ja joka viisaan siittänyt on, hän iloitsee hänestä.
The father of the righteous shall greatly rejoice: and he that begetteth a wise child shall have joy of him.
25 Anna isäs ja äitis iloita; ja riemuitkaan se, joka sinun synnyttänyt on.
Let thy father and thy mother be glad, and let her that bare thee rejoice.
26 Anna minulle, poikani, sydämes, ja sinun silmäs pitäköön minun tieni.
My son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes delight in my ways.
27 Sillä portto on syvä kuoppa, ja vieras vaimo on ahdas kaivo.
For a whore is a deep ditch; and a strange woman is a narrow pit.
28 Ja hän väijyy niinkuin saalista, ja saattaa monta tottelemattomaksi ihmisten seassa.
Yea, she lieth in wait as a robber, and increaseth the treacherous among men.
29 Kussa on kipu? kussa murhe? kussa tora? kussa valitus? kenellä haavat ilman syytä? kenellä punaiset silmät?
Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath complaining? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes?
30 Siinä, kussa viinan tykönä viivytään, ja tullaan tyhjentämään, mitä sisälle pantu on.
They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek out mixed wine.
31 Älä katsele viinaa, vaikka se punoittaa, ja on selkiänä lasissa, ja huokiasti menee alas;
Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth its colour in the cup, when it goeth down smoothly.
32 Vaan viimeiseltä puree se niinkuin käärme, ja pistää niinkuin kyykäärme.
At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.
33 Niin katsovat sinun silmäs muita vaimoja, ja sinun sydämes puhuu toimettomia asioita,
Thine eyes shall behold strange things, and thine heart shall utter froward things.
34 Ja sinä tulet niinkuin se, joka makaa keskellä merta, ja niinkuin se joka makaa ylhäällä haahden pielen päässä.
Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast.
35 Sinä sanot; he löivät minua, vaan en minä kipua tuntenut; he sysivät minua, ja en minä tiennyt. Kuin minä herään, niin tahdon minä vielä niin tehdä, ja sitä enempi etsiä.
They have stricken me, [shalt thou say], and I was not hurt; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.
