Matteuksen 14
1 Siihen aikaan kuuli Herodes tetrarka Jesuksen sanoman,
At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the reports about Jesus
2 Ja sanoi palvelioillensa: tämä on Johannes Kastaja: hän on noussut kuolleista, ja sentähden tekee hän senkaltaisia väkeviä töitä.
and said to his servants, “This is John the Baptist; he has risen from the dead! That is why miraculous powers are at work in him.”
3 Sillä Herodes oli ottanut Johanneksen kiinni, sitonut ja vankiuteen pannut, Herodiaksen, veljensä Philippuksen emännän tähden.
Now Herod had arrested John and bound him and put him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife,
4 Sillä Johannes oli hänelle sanonut: ei sinulle ole luvallinen häntä pitää.
because John had been telling him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.”
5 Ja kuin hän tahtoi hänen tappaa, pelkäsi hän kansaa; sillä he pitivät hänen prophetana.
Although Herod wanted to kill John, he was afraid of the people, because they regarded John as a prophet.
6 Mutta kun Herodeksen syntymäjuhlaa pidettiin, hyppäsi Herodiaksen tytär heidän edessänsä; ja se kelpasi Herodekselle.
On Herod’s birthday, however, the daughter of Herodias danced before them and pleased Herod
7 Sentähden lupasi hän hänelle vannotulla valalla antaa, mitä hän anois.
so much that he promised with an oath to give to her whatever she asked.

Prompted by her mother, she said, “Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.”

The king was grieved, but because of his oaths and his guests, he ordered that her wish be granted
10 Ja lähetti leikkaamaan Johanneksen kaulaa tornissa.
and sent to have John beheaded in the prison.
11 Ja hänen päänsä kannettiin vadissa ja annettiin piialle, ja hän vei sen äidillensä.
John’s head was brought in on a platter and presented to the girl, who carried it to her mother.
12 Ja hänen opetuslapsensa tulivat, ja ottivat pois hänen ruumiinsa, ja hautasivat sen; ja menivät ja ilmoittivat Jesukselle.
Then John’s disciples came and took his body and buried it. And they went and informed Jesus.
13 Ja kuin Jesus sen kuuli, meni hän sieltä pois haahdella erämaahan yksinänsä. Ja kuin kansa se kuuli, noudattivat he häntä jalkaisin kaupungeista.
When Jesus heard about John, He withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. But the crowds found out about it and followed Him on foot from the towns.
14 Ja Jesus meni ulos, ja näki paljon kansaa, ja armahti heidän päällensä, ja paransi heidän sairaitansa.
When He stepped ashore and saw a large crowd, He had compassion on them and healed their sick.
15 Mutta kun ehtoo tuli, tulivat hänen opetuslapsensa hänen tykönsä, ja sanoivat: tämä on erämaa, ja aika on jo kulunut: laske kansa, että he menisivät kyliin itsellensä ruokaa ostamaan.
When evening came, the disciples came to Him and said, “This is a desolate place, and the hour is already late. Dismiss the crowds so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.”
16 Niin Jesus sanoi heille: ei tarvitse heidän mennä pois: antakaat te heidän syödä.
“They do not need to go away,” Jesus replied. “You give them something to eat.”
17 Mutta he sanoivat hänelle: ei meillä ole tässä enempi kuin viisi leipää ja kaksi kalaa.
“We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish,” they answered.
18 Hän sanoi: tuokaat minulle ne tänne.
“Bring them here to Me,” Jesus said.
19 Ja hän käski kansan istua ruoholle, ja otti ne viisi leipää ja kaksi kalaa, katsahti ylös taivaasen, kiitti, ja mursi, ja antoi leivät opetuslapsille, ja opetuslapset antoivat kansalle.
And He directed the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, He spoke a blessing. Then He broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people.
20 Ja he söivät kaikki, ja ravittiin. Niin he kokosivat tähteistä muruja, kaksitoistakymmentä koria täyteen.
They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.
21 Mutta niitä, jotka olivat syöneet, oli lähes viisituhatta miestä, ilman vaimoja ja lapsia.
About five thousand men were fed, in addition to women and children.
22 Ja kohta vaati Jesus opetuslapsiansa haahteen astumaan, ja menemään hänen edellään toiselle rannalle, niinkauvan kuin hän kansan olis tyköänsä laskenut.
Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of Him to the other side, while He dismissed the crowds.
23 Ja kuin hän oli kansan laskenut, astui hän yksinänsä vuorelle rukoilemaan. Ja kuin ehtoo joutui, oli hän siellä yksinänsä.
After He had sent them away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray. When evening came, He was there alone,
24 Mutta haaksi oli jo keskellä merta, ja ahdistettiin aalloilta; sillä vastatuuli oli.
but the boat was already far from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.
25 Mutta yöllä, neljännessä vartiossa, tuli Jesus heidän tykönsä, käyden merellä.
During the fourth watch of the night, Jesus went out to them, walking on the sea.
26 Ja kuin opetuslapset näkivät hänen merellä käyvän, peljästyivät he, ja sanoivat: kyöpeli se on; ja huusivat pelvon tähden.
When the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost!” they said, and cried out in fear.
27 Niin Jesus puhui kohta heille ja sanoi: olkaat hyvässä turvassa! minä olen: älkäät peljästykö.
But Jesus spoke up at once: “Take courage! It is I. Do not be afraid.”
28 Niin vastasi Pietari häntä ja sanoi: Herra, jos sinä olet, niin käske minun tulla tykös vetten päällä.
“Lord, if it is You,” Peter replied, “command me to come to You on the water.”
29 Niin hän sanoi: tule! Ja Pietari astui ulos haahdesta ja kävi vetten päällä, että hän menis Jesuksen tykö.
“Come,” said Jesus. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water, and came toward Jesus.
30 Ja kuin hän näki ankaran tuulen, niin hän peljästyi, ja rupesi vajoomaan, huusi sanoen: Herra, auta minua!
But when he saw the strength of the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”
31 Niin Jesus ojensi kohta kätensä, ja tarttui häneen, ja sanoi hänelle: oi sinä heikko-uskoinen, miksis epäilit?
Immediately Jesus reached out His hand and took hold of Peter. “You of little faith,” He said, “why did you doubt?”
32 Kuin he astuivat haahteen, niin tuuli tyveni.
And when they had climbed back into the boat, the wind died down.
33 Mutta ne, jotka olivat haahdessa, tulivat ja kumarsivat häntä, ja sanoivat: totisesti olet sinä Jumalan Poika.
Then those who were in the boat worshiped Him, saying, “Truly You are the Son of God!”
34 Ja kuin he olivat menneet ylitse, tulivat he Genesaretin maalle.
When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret.
35 Ja kuin sen paikan miehet tunsivat hänen, lähettivät he ympäri kaikkea sitä maata, ja toivat hänen tykönsä kaikkinaisia sairaita,
And when the men of that place recognized Jesus, they sent word to all the surrounding region. People brought all the sick to Him
36 Ja rukoilivat häntä, että he ainoastaan hänen vaatteensa palteeseen saisivat ruveta. Ja kaikki, jotka siihen rupesivat, tulivat terveiksi.
and begged Him just to let them touch the fringe of His cloak. And all who touched Him were healed.
