1 Ja hän läksi sieltä ja meni isänsä maalle, ja hänen opetuslapsensa seurasivat häntä.
Jesus left that place, and accompanied by his disciples, came into his own part of the country.
2 Ja kuin sabbati tuli, rupesi hän synagogassa opettamaan; ja monta, jotka kuulivat, hämmästyivät, sanoen: kusta tällä nämät ovat? ja mikä viisaus hänelle annettu on, että myös senkaltaiset väkevät työt hänen kättensä kautta tapahtuvat?
When it came Sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue; many, as they listened, were deeply impressed. "Where did he get all this?" they asked; "What is the wisdom that is given to this man, and miracles such as these that happen at his hands?
3 Eikö tämä ole se seppä, Marian poika, Jakobin ja Joseen ja Juudaan ja Simonin veli? eikö myös hänen sisarensa ole tässä meidän kanssamme? ja he pahenivat hänessä.
Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, and the brother of Jamesand Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us?"
4 Mutta Jesus sanoi heille: ei propheta muualla ole katsottu ylön kuin isänsä maalla ja lankoinsa seassa ja kotonansa.
So they disapproved of him. Then Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor except in his native land and among his relatives and in his home."
5 Ja ei hän voinut siellä yhtään väkevää työtä tehdä, vaan ainoastaan pani kätensä harvain sairasten päälle ja paransi heitä;
And he was unable to do any miracle there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick folk and healed them.
6 Ja ihmetteli heidän epäuskoansa. Ja hän vaelsi ympäri kyliä, opettain ympäristöllä,
And he wondered at their lack of faith. So he went among the neighboring villages, teaching.

Then summoning the Twelve to him, he began to send them out two by two, giving them authority over unclean spirits.

He bade them take nothing but a staff for their journey; no bread, no wallet, no coins in their purse;

they were to wear sandals, but not to put on two tunics.
10 Ja hän sanoi heille: kussa ikänä te huoneeseen menette sisälle, niin olkaat siinä, niinkauvan kuin te sieltä menette pois.
"Wherever you enter a house," he told them, "remain there until you leave the place;
11 Ja jotka ei teitä vastaan ota, eikä kuule teitä, niin menkäät pois sieltä ja pyyhkikäät tomu, joka teidän jalkainne alla on, heille todistukseksi. Totisesti sanon minä teille: Sodomalle ja Gomorralle on tuomiopäivänä huokiampi kuin sille kaupungille.
and if any place does not receive you, or listen to you, as you go out of it shake off the dust under your feet, as a warning to them."
12 Ja he läksivät ulos ja saarnasivat, että he parannuksen tekisivät,
So they fared forth and summoned men to repentance.
13 Ja ajoivat ulos monta perkelettä, ja voitelivat öljyllä monta sairasta, ja paransivat.
They cast out many demons, and anointed many sick people with oil and cured them.
14 Ja kuningas Herodes sai sen kuulla (sillä hänen nimensä oli jo julistettu), ja sanoi: Johannes, joka kastoi, on noussut kuolleista, ja sentähden voimat vaikuttavat hänessä.
King Herod heard it, for the name of Jesus had become well known, People were saying, "Johnthe Baptist is risen from the dead, and on that account these powers are working in him."
15 Muut sanoivat: se on Elias: mutta toiset sanoivat: se on propheta, taikka niinkuin joku prophetaista.
"He is Elijah," said others. And still others were saying, "He is a prophet, like one of the old prophets."
16 Mutta kuin Herodes se kuuli, sanoi hän: se on Johannes, jonka kaulan minä annoin leikata, hän on kuolleista noussut.
But when Herod heard, he said, "That Johnwhom I beheaded has come back to life."
17 Sillä Herodes oli lähettänyt Johannesta ottamaan kiinni, ja pani hänen torniin, Herodiaksen, veljensä Philippuksen emännän tähden, jonka hän oli nainut.
Now this Herod had sent and arrested John, and bound him in prison, for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, whom he had married.
18 Sillä Johannes oli Herodekselle sanonut: ei sinulle ole luvallista pitää veljes emäntää.
For Johnhad often told Herod, "It is not right for you to live with your brother’s wife."
19 Ja Herodias väijyi häntä, ja tahtoi häntä tappaa; mutta ei hän saanut.
So Herodias hated him, and wished to put him to death;
20 Sillä Herodes pelkäsi Johannesta, että hän tiesi hänen hurskaaksi ja pyhäksi mieheksi, ja otti vaarin hänestä, ja kuuli häntä monessa asiassa, ja kuulteli häntä mielellänsä.
but she could not, for Herod was afraid of Johnbecause he knew that he was a just and holy man. So he kept him safe. When he listened to Johnhe was much exercised, yet he found pleasure in listening to him.
21 Ja kuin sovelias päivä tuli, että Herodes syntymäpäivänänsä teki ehtoollisen ylimmäisillensä ja päämiehille ja esimiehille Galileassa,
Then came a convenient day, when Herod on his birthday held a feast for his lords and generals and the leading men of Galilee,
22 Ja Herodiaksen tytär tuli sisälle ja hyppäsi, ja se kelpasi Herodekselle ja ynnä atrioitseville, sanoi kuningas piialle: ano minulta mitäs tahdot, ja minä annan sinulle.
at which the daughter of Herodias herself came in and danced. She charmed Herod and his guests. "Ask me whatever you want," said the king to the young girl, "and I will give it to you."
23 Ja hän vannoi hänelle: mitä ikänä sinä minulta anot, niin minä annan sinulle, puoleen minun valtakuntaani asti.
He even swore to her that whatever she asked, he would give it to her, up to half his kingdom.
24 Mutta se meni ulos ja sanoi äidillensä: mitä minun pitää anoman? vaan se sanoi: Johannes Kastajan päätä.
So she came out and said to her mother, "What shall I ask for?" "The head of Johnthe Baptist," she replied.
25 Ja hän kohta meni sisälle kiiruusti kuninkaan tykö, anoi sanoen: minä tahdon, ettäs minulle annat juuri nyt Johannes Kastajan pään vadissa.
So she at once hurried in to the king and made her request, "I want you," she said, "to give me, without delay, the head of Johnthe Baptist on a charger."
26 Niin kuningas tuli sangen murheelliseksi; kuitenkin valan tähden ja niiden, jotka ynnä atrioitsivat, ei tahtonut häneltä kieltää.
Then the king was exceedingly sorry; yet on account of his oaths and his guests he was unwilling to disappoint her.
27 Ja kuningas lähetti kohta murhaajan, ja käski hänen päänsä tuoda.
So he sent at once a soldier of the guard with orders to bring his head.
28 Niin se meni ja leikkasi hänen kaulansa tornissa, ja toi hänen päänsä vadissa, ja antoi sen piialle; ja piika antoi sen äidillensä.
And he went and beheaded Johnin prison, brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the young girl, and she gave it to her mother.
29 Ja kuin hänen opetuslapsensa sen kuulivat, tulivat he ja ottivat hänen ruumiinsa, ja panivat sen hautaan.
When John’s disciples heard of this, they came, and took his body, and laid it in a tomb.
30 Ja apostolit kokoontuivat Jesuksen tykö, ja ilmoittivat hänelle kaikki sekä ne, mitkä he tekivät, ja mitä he opettivat.
When the apostles had come back to Jesus, they told him all the things they had done, and all they had taught.
31 Ja hän sanoi heille: tulkaat te yksinänne erinäiseen paikkaan ja levätkäät vähä; sillä monta oli, jotka tulivat ja menivät, niin ettei he syödäkään joutaneet.
Then he said to them, "Come apart, yourselves, to a quiet spot, and rest a while." For there were many coming and going, and they could not get time even to eat.
32 Ja he menivät korpeen haahdella erinänsä.
So they sailed away privately to a solitary place.
33 Ja kansa näki heidän menevän, ja moni tunsi hänen, ja juoksivat sinne jalkaisin kaikista kaupungeista, ja he ennättivät heitä, ja he kokoontuivat hänen tykönsä.
However, many saw them going, and recognized them, and ran together by land from all the neighboring towns, and arrived there first.
34 Ja Jesus läksi ulos ja näki paljon kansaa, ja hän armahti heitä; sillä he olivat niinkuin lampaat, joilla ei ole paimenta, ja rupesi heitä opettamaan paljon.
So when Jesus landed he saw a vast multitude, and he was moved with compassion for them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd, and he began to teach them many things.
35 Ja kuin päivä paljon kulunut oli, tulivat hänen opetuslapsensa hänen tykönsä, sanoen: tämä on erämaa, ja aika on jo kulunut.
Then when the day was now far spent, his disciples came to him and said. "This place is desert, and the day is now far spent.
36 Laske heitä, että he menisivät ympäri kyliin ja majoihin, ostamaan itsellensä leipiä; sillä ei heillä ole syötävää.
Send the people away so that they may go to the farms and villages about here, and buy themselves something to eat."
37 Mutta hän vastaten sanoi heille: antakaa te heille syötävää. Ja he sanoivat hänelle: pitääkö meidän menemän kahdellasadalla penningillä leipiä ostamaan, ja antamaan heidän syödä?
In answer he said to them, "You yourselves are to give them food." "Are we to go and buy fifty dollars worth of bread," they said, "and give them food?"
38 Mutta hän sanoi heille: kuinka monta leipää teillä on? menkäät ja katsokaat. Ja kuin he katsoivat, sanoivat he: viisi, ja kaksi kalaa.
"How many loaves have you?" he answered. "Go and see." When they had found out, they said, "Five, and two fishes."
39 Ja hän käski heidän istuttaa kaikki atrioitsemaan eri joukkoihin viheriäisen ruohon päälle.
Then he directed them to make all sit down by companies on the green grass.
40 Ja he istuivat joukoissa sadoin ja viisinkymmenin.
And they sat down like beds in a garden, by hundreds and by fifties.
41 Ja kuin hän otti ne viisi leipää ja kaksi kalaa, katsoi hän taivaaseen, kiitti ja mursi leivät, ja antoi opetuslapsillensa pantaa niiden eteen: ja ne kaksi kalaa jakoi hän kaikille.
Then he took the five loaves and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven he blessed, broke the loaves in pieces, and kept giving to the disciples to distribute.
42 Ja he söivät kaikki ja ravittiin.
The two fish also he divided to them all.
43 Ja he korjasivat kaksitoistakymmentä täysinäistä koria muruja, ja myös kaloista.
All ate and had enough; and they carried away broken fragments of bread and of fish, enough to fill twelve baskets.
44 Ja niitä, kuin söivät, oli lähes viisituhatta miestä.
Those who ate the bread were five thousand adult men.
45 Ja hän ajoi kohta opetuslapsensa astumaan haahteen ja edellä menemään meren ylitse Betsaidaan, siihenasti kuin hän päästäis kansan.
Then he at once compelled the disciples to embark in the boat and go before him to Bethsaida on the other side, while he sent the people away.
46 Ja kuin hän oli päästänyt heidät, meni hän vuorelle rukoilemaan.
After he had taken leave of them, he went away into the mountain to pray.
47 Ja kuin ehtoo tuli, oli haaksi keskellä merta, ja hän yksinänsä maalla.
And when evening came, the boat was half-way across the sea, while he was on shore alone;
48 Ja hän näki heidän olevan hädässä soutamisessa; (sillä heillä oli vastainen). Ja liki neljäntenä yön vartiona tuli hän heidän tykönsä, käyden meren päällä, ja tahtoi mennä heidän ohitsensa.
but when he saw them distressed in rowing (for the wind was against them), about the fourth watch of the night he went to them, walking upon the sea,
49 Mutta kuin he näkivät hänen käyvän meren päällä, luulivat he olevan kyöpelin ja huusivat.
they thought it was an apparition and shrieked aloud, for they all saw him and were terrified.
50 (Sillä kaikki näkivät hänen ja hämmästyivät.) Ja hän puhui kohta heidän kanssansa ja sanoi heille: olkaat hyvässä turvassa, minä olen, älkäät peljätkö.
But he at once spoke with them, saying. "Courage! It is I. Do not be afraid!"
51 Ja hän astui heidän tykönsä haahteen, ja tuuli heikkeni. Ja he paljoa enemmän keskenänsä hämmästyivät ja ihmettelivät;
Then he got into the boat beside them, and the wind ceased, and they were utterly astounded,
52 Sillä ei he ymmärtäneet leivistäkään, vaan heidän sydämensä oli paatunut.
for they had not understood about the loaves; on the contrary their heart was hardened.
53 Ja kuin he olivat meneet ylitse, tulivat he Genesaretin maalle ja laskivat satamaan.
When they had crossed over they landed at Gennesaret and moored to the shore.
54 Ja kuin he menivät ulos haahdesta, niin he kohta tunsivat hänen,
As soon as they got out of the boat, the people at once recognized him,
55 Ja juoksivat ympäri kaiken sen ympäristön, ja rupesivat sairaita viemään vuoteissansa, kussa he kuulivat hänen olevan.
and began running over that whole country, and carrying the sick about on their beds, wherever they heard he was.
56 Ja kuhunka hän meni sisälle kyliin eli kaupunkeihin taikka majoihin, niin he panivat kujille sairaita, ja rukoilivat häntä, että he ainoastaan hänen vaatteensa palteeseen saisivat ruveta, ja niin monta kuin häneen rupesi, ne paranivat.
And whenever he entered into villages or cities or the fields they would lay the sick in the market-places and beseech him to let them touch even the tassel of his cloak, and all who touched him were made well.
