1 Minä olen mies, jonka viheliäisyyttä nähdä täytyy hänen hirmuisuutensa vitsan kautta.
ALEPH. I am the man that sees poverty, through the rod of his wrath upon me.
2 Hän johdatti minua ja vei pimeyteen ja ei valkeuteen.
He has taken me, and led me away into darkness, and not [into] light.
3 Hän on kätensä kääntänyt minua vastaan, ja toimittaa toisin aina minun kanssani.
Nay, against me has he turned his hand all the day.
4 Hän on tehnyt lihani ja nahkani vanhaksi, ja luuni musertanut.
He has made old my flesh and my skin; he has broken my bones.
5 Hän rakensi minua vastaan, ja sapella ja vaivalla hän minua kääri.
BETH. He has built against me, and compassed my head, and brought travail [upon me].
6 Hän on minut pannut pimeyteen, niinkuin aikaa kuolleet.
He has set me in dark places, as them that have long been dead.
7 Hän on minut muurannut sisälle, etten minä pääse ulos, ja minut kovaan jalkapuuhun pannut.
He has builded against me, and I can’t come forth: he has made my brazen [chain] heavy.
8 Ja vaikka minä huudan ja parun, niin hän kuitenkin korvansa tukitsee minun rukouksestani.
GIMEL. Yes, [though] I cry and shout, he shuts out my prayer.
9 Hän on muurannut tieni kiinni vuojonkivillä, ja polkuni sulkenut.
DALETH. He has built up my ways, he has hedged my paths;
10 Hän on väijynyt minua niinkuin karhu, niinkuin jalopeura salaisuudessa.
he has troubled me, [as] a she-bear lying in wait: he is to me [as] a lion in secret places.
11 Hän on minun antanut tieltä eksyä, ja minut repinyt säpäleiksi, ja minut autioksi tehnyt.
He pursued [me] after I departed, and brought me to a stand: he has utterly ruined me.
12 Hän on joutsensa jännittänyt, ja asettanut minun nuolella tarkoitettavaksi.
HE. He has bent his bow, and set me as a mark for the arrow.
13 Hän ampui minun munaskuihini viinensä nuolet.
He has caused the arrows of his quiver to enter into my reins.
14 Minä olen kaiken minun kansani nauru, ja heidän jokapäiväinen virtensä.
I became a laughing stock to all my people; and their song all the day.
15 Hän on haikeudella minut ravinnut, ja koiruoholla juovuttanut.
VAU. He has filled me with bitterness, he has drenched me with gall.
16 Hän on hampaani somerolla rikki musertanut, hän kieritti minun tuhassa.
And he has dashed out my teeth with gravel, he has fed me with ashes.
17 Minun sieluni on ajettu pois rauhasta, minun täytyy hyvän unohtaa.
He has also removed my soul from peace: I forgot prosperity.
18 Minä sanoin: minun voimani ja minun toivoni Herran päälle on kadonnut.
Therefore my success has perished, and my hope from the Lord.
19 Muista siis, kuinka minä niin raadollinen ja hyljätty, koiruoholla ja sapella juotettu olen.
ZAIN. I remembered by reason of my poverty, and because of persecution my bitterness and gall shall be remembered;
20 Minun sieluni sen kyllä muistaa, ja sitä itsellensä tutkistelee.
and my soul shall meditate with me.
21 Minä panen sen sydämeeni; sentähden minä vielä nyt toivon.
This will I lay up in my heart, therefore I will endure.
22 Herran laupiudesta se on, ettemme ratki hukkuneet; ei hänen laupiutensa vielä loppunut.
HETH. [It is] the mercies of the Lord, that he has not failed me, because his compassions are not exhausted. Pity [us], O Lord, early [every] month: for we are not brought to an end, because his compassions are not exhausted.
23 Vaan joka huomen se on uusi, ja sinun uskollisuutes on suuri.
[They are] new every morning: great is your faithfulness.
24 Herra on minun osani, sanoo minun sieluni; sentähden tahdon minä häneen toivoa.
The Lord is my portion, says my soul; therefore will I wait for him.
25 Herra on hyvä niille, jotka häneen toivovat, ja niille sieluille, jotka häntä kysyvät.
TETH. The Lord is good to them that wait for him: the soul which shall seek him
26 Hyvä on olla kärsivällisenä ja Herralta apua toivoa.
[is] good, and shall wait for, and quietly expect salvation of the Lord.
27 Hyvä on ihmiselle ijestä kantaa nuoruudessansa;
TETH. [It is] good for a man when he bears a yoke in his youth.
28 Että hän istuu yksinänsä, on vaiti, kuin jotakin hänen päällensä tulee,
He will sit alone, and be silent, because he has borne [it] upon him.
29 Ja panee suunsa tomuun, ja odottaa toivoa,
30 Ja antaa löydä poskillensa, ja paljon pilkkaa kärsii.
JOD. He will give [his] cheek to him that smites him: he will be filled full with reproaches.
31 Sillä ei Herra syökse pois ijankaikkisesti.
For the Lord will not reject for ever.
32 Vaan hän saattaa murheelliseksi, ja taas armahtaa suuresta laupiudestansa.
CHAPH. For he that has brought down will pity, and [that] according to the abundance of his mercy.
33 Sillä ei hän sydämestänsä ihmisiä kurita eikä murheesen saata,
He has not answered [in anger] from his heart, though he has brought low the children of a man.
34 Niinkuin hän tahtois raadolliset maan päällä ratki jalkainsa alla polkea,
LAMED. To bring down under his feet all the prisoners of the earth,
35 Ja antais jonkun miehen oikeuden Ylimmäisen edessä tulla käännetyksi pois,
to turn aside the judgment of a man before the face of the Most High,
36 Ja ihmistä väärin tuomita asiassansa, niinkuin ei Herra sitä näkisikään.
to condemn a man [unjustly] in his judgment, the Lord has not given commandment.
37 Kuka tohtii siis sanoa: senkaltaiset tapahtuvat ilman Herran käskyä?
Who has thus spoken, and it has come to pass? the Lord has not commanded it.
38 Eikö paha ja hyvä tule Korkeimman suusta?
Out of the mouth of the Most High there shall not come forth evil and good.
39 Miksi siis ihmiset nurisevat eläissänsä? Jokainen nuriskaan syntejänsä vastaan.
MEM. Why should a living man complain, a man concerning his sin?
40 Tutkistelkaamme ja etsikäämme meidän menoamme, ja palatkaamme Herran tykö.
NUN. Our way has been searched out and examined, and we will turn to the Lord.
41 Nostakaamme meidän sydämemme ja kätemme taivaasen päin, Jumalan tykö.
Let us lift up our hearts with [our] hand to the lofty One in heaven.
42 Me, me olemme syntiä tehneet ja kovakorvaiset olleet; (sentähden) et sinä säästänytkään.
We have sinned, we have transgressed; and you have not pardoned.
43 Vaan sinä olet vihalla meitä peittänyt ja vainonnut, ja armottomasti surmannut.
SAMECH. You has visited [us] in wrath, and driven us away: you has slain, you has not pitied.
44 Sinä verhoitit itses pilvellä, ettei rukous päässyt sen lävitse.
You have veiled yourself with a cloud because of prayer, that I might be blind,
45 Sinä olet meitä tunkioksi ja saastaisuudeksi kansain seassa tehnyt.
and be cast off. AIN. You have set us [alone] in the midst of the nations.
46 Kaikki meidän vihollisemme ovat suutansa ammottaneet meitä vastaan.
All our enemies have opened their mouth against us.
47 Me painetaan alas ja rangaistaan pelvolla ja ahdistuksella.
Fear and wrath are come upon us, suspense and destruction.
48 Minun silmäni vuotavat vesi-ojia minun kansani tyttären surkeuden tähden.
Mine eye shall pour down torrents of water, for the destruction of the daughter of my people.
49 Minun silmäni vuotavat ja ei taida lakata; ei he asetu,
PHE. Mine eye is drowned [with tears], and I will not be silent, so that there shall be no rest,
50 Siihenasti että Herra katsoo taivaasta alas ja näkee.
until the Lord look down, and behold from heaven.
51 Minun silmäni kuluttaa minulta elämäni kaikkein minun kaupunkini tytärten tähden.
Mine eye shall prey upon my soul, because of all the daughters of the city.
52 Minun viholliseni ovat minua kovin ajaneet takaa, niinkuin lintua ilman syytä.
TSADE. The fowlers chased me as a sparrow, all mine enemies destroyed my life in a pit without cause,
53 He ovat minun elämäni kuoppaan salvanneet, ja heittäneet kiven minun päälleni.
and laid a stone upon me.
54 Ovat myös vedet minun pääni ylitse käyneet; niin minä sanoin: nyt minä ratki hukassa olen.
Water flowed over my head: I said, I am cut off.
55 Minä huusin avukseni sinun nimeäs, Herra, alhaalta kuopasta;
KOPH. I called upon your name, O Lord, out of the lowest dungeon.
56 Ja sinä kuulit minun ääneni, älä korvias kätke minun huokauksestani ja huudostani.
You heard my voice: close not your ears to my supplication.
57 Sinä lähenet kuin minä sinua huudan, ja sanot: älä pelkää.
You drew near to my help: in the day wherein I called upon you you said to me, Fear not.
58 Sinä, Herra, ratkaiset minun sieluni asian, ja lunastat minun henkeni.
RECHS. O Lord, you has pleaded the causes of my soul; you has redeemed my life.
59 Herra katso, kuinka minulle niin vääryyttä tehdään, ja tuomitse minun oikeuteni.
You have seen, O Lord, my troubles: you have judged my cause.
60 Sinä näet kaikki heidän kostonsa ja kaikki heidän ajatuksensa minusta.
You have seen all their vengeance, [you have looked] on all their devices against me.
61 Herra, sinä kuulet heidän pilkkansa ja kaikki heidän ajatuksensa minua vastaan,
CHSEN. You have heard their reproach [and] all their devices against me;
62 Minun vainollisteni huulet ja heidän neuvonsa minua vastaan yli päivää.
the lips of them that rose up against me, and their plots against me all the day;
63 Katso, kuin he istuvat eli nousevat, niin he minusta virsiä laulavat.
their sitting down and their rising up: look you upon their eyes.
64 Kosta heille, Herra, niinkuin he ansainneet ovat, heidän kättensä töiden jälkeen.
You will render them a recompense, O Lord, according to the works of their hands.
65 Anna heidän sydämensä vavista ja sinun kiroustas tuta.
THAU. You will give them [as] a covering, the grief of my heart.
66 Vainoo heitä hirmuisuudella, ja hukuta heitä Herran taivaan alta.
You will persecute them in anger, and will consume them from under the heaven, O Lord.
