Johanneksen 11
1 Niin mies sairasti, nimeltä Latsarus, Betaniasta, Marian ja hänen sisarensa Martan kylästä.
Now a certain man, named Lazarus, of Bethany, was lying ill-- Bethany being the village of Mary and her sister Martha.
2 Mutta Maria oli se, joka voiteli Herran voiteella ja hänen jalkansa hiuksillansa kuivaksi, jonka veli Latsarus sairasti.
(It was the Mary who poured the perfume over the Lord and wiped His feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ill.)
3 Niin hänen sisarensa lähettivät hänen tykönsä, ja sanoivat: Herra, katso, se sairastaa, jotas rakastat.
So the sisters sent to Him to say, "Master, he whom you hold dear is ill."
4 Kuin Jesus sen kuuli, sanoi hän: ei tämä tauti ole kuolemaksi, vaan Jumalan kunniaksi, että Jumalan Poika sen kautta kunnioittettaisiin.
Jesus received the message and said, "This illness is not to end in death, but is to promote the glory of God, in order that the Son of God may be glorified by it."
5 Mutta Jesus rakasti Marttaa, ha hänen sisartansa, ja Latsarusta.
Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.
6 Kuin hän siis kuuli hänen sairastavan, niin hän viipyi siinä paikassa kaksi päivää.
When, however, He heard that Lazarus was ill, He still remained two days in that same place.
7 Sitte sanoi hän opetuslapsillensa: menkäämme jälleen Juudeaan.
Then, after that, He said to the disciples, "Let us return to Judaea."
8 Sanoivat hänelle opetuslapset: Rabbi, äsken etsivät Juudalaiset sinua kivittääksensä, ja sinä menet taas sinne.
"Rabbi," exclaimed the disciples, "the Jews have just been trying to stone you, and do you think of going back there again?"
9 Vastasi Jesus: eikö kaksitoistakymmentä ole päivän hetkeä? Jos joku päivällä vaeltaa, ei hän loukkaa itsiänsä; sillä hän näkee tämän maailman valkeuden.
"Are there not twelve hours in the day?" replied Jesus. "If any one walks in the daytime, he does not stumble--because he sees the light of this world.
10 Mutta jos joku yöllä vaeltaa, hän loukkaa itsensä; sillä ei valkeus ole hänessä.
But if a man walks by night, he does stumble, because the light is not in him."
11 Näitä hän puhui, ja sanoi sitte heille: ystävämme Latsarus makaa, mutta minä menen häntä unesta herättämään.
He said this, and afterwards He added, "Our friend Lazarus is sleeping, but I will go and wake him."
12 Niin sanoivat hänen opetuslapsensa: Herra, jos hän makaa, kyllä hän paranee.
"Master," said the disciples, "if he is asleep he will recover."
13 Mutta Jesus sanoi hänen kuolemastansa; vaan he luulivat hänen sanovan unen makaamisesta.
Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought He referred to the rest taken in ordinary sleep.
14 Niin Jesus sanoi heille selkiästi: Latsarus on kuollut.
So then He told them plainly,
15 Ja minä iloitsen teidän tähtenne, etten minä siellä ollut, että te uskoisitte. Mutta menkäämme hänen tykönsä.
"Lazarus is dead; and for your sakes I am glad I was not there, in order that you may believe. But let us go to him."
16 Niin sanoi Toomas, joka kutsutaan kaksoiseksi, muille opetuslapsille: käykäämme myös me, että me kuolisimme hänen kanssansa.
"Let us go also," Thomas, the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, "that we may die with him."
17 niin Jesus tuli ja löysi hänen jo neljä päivää maanneen haudassa.
On His arrival Jesus found that Lazarus had already been three days in the tomb.
18 Mutta Betania oli läsnä Jerusalemia, lähes viisitoitakymmentä vakomittaa.
Bethany was near Jerusalem, the distance being a little less than two miles;
19 Ja monta Juudalaisista oli tullut Martan ja Marian tykö, lohduttamaan heitä heidän veljensä tähden.
and a considerable number of the Jews were with Martha and Mary, having come to express sympathy with them on the death of their brother.
20 Kuin Martta kuuli Jesuksen tulevan, juoksi hän häntä vastaa; mutta Maria istui kotona.
Martha, however, as soon as she heard the tidings, "Jesus is coming," went to meet Him; but Mary remained sitting in the house.
21 Niin Martta sanoi Jesukselle: Herra, jos sinä olisit täällä ollut, niin ei minun veljeni olisi kuollut.
So Martha came and spoke to Jesus. "Master, if you had been here," she said, "my brother would not have died.
22 Mutta minä tiedän vielä, että kaikki, mitä sinä anot Jumalalta, ne Jumala sinulle antaa.
And even now I know that whatever you ask God for, God will give you."
23 Jesus sanoi hänelle: sinun veljes on nouseva ylös.
"Your brother shall rise again," replied Jesus.
24 Martta sanoi hänelle: minä tiedän hänen nousevan ylösnousemisessa viimeisenä päivänä.
"I know," said Martha, "that he will rise again at the resurrection, on the last day."
25 Sanoi Jesus hänelle: minä olen ylösnousemus ja elämä: joka uskoo minun päälleni, hän elää, ehkä hän olis kuollut.
"I am the Resurrection and the Life," said Jesus; "he who believes in me, even if he has died, he shall live;
26 Ja jokainen, joka elää ja uskoo minun päälleni, ei hänen pidä kuoleman ijankaikkisesti: uskotkos sen? (aiōn g165)
and every one who is living and is a believer in me shall never, never die. Do you believe this?" (aiōn g165)
27 Hän sanoi hänelle: jaa Herra, minä uskon sinun Kristukseksi, Jumalan Pojaksi, joka tuleva oli maailmaan.
"Yes, Master," she replied; "I thoroughly believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world."
28 Ja kuin hän näitä sanonut oli, meni hän pois ja kutsui sisarensa Marian salaa, sanoen: Mestari on tullut ja kutsuu sinua.
After saying this, she went and called her sister Mary privately, telling her, "The Rabbi is here and is asking for you."
29 Kuin hän sen kuuli, nousi hän kohta ja tuli hänen tykösä.
So she, on hearing that, rose up quickly to go to Him.
30 (Sillä ei Jesus ollut vielä kylään tullut, vaan oli siinä paikassa, jossa Martta oli hänen kohdannut.)
Now Jesus was not yet come into the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met Him.
31 Kuin siis Juudalaiset, jotka hänen kanssansa huoneessa olivat lohduttamassa häntä, näkivät Marian nousevan ja menevän ulos, seurasivat he häntä, sanoen: hän menee haudalle itkemään.
So the Jews who were with Mary in the house sympathizing with her, when they saw that she had risen hastily and had gone out, followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to weep aloud there.
32 Kuin Maria sinne tuli, kussa Jesus oli, ja näki hänen, lankesi hän hänen jalkainsa juureen ja sanoi hänelle: Herra, jos olisit täällä ollut, ei olisi minun veljeni kuollut.
Mary then, when she came to Jesus and saw Him, fell at His feet and exclaimed, "Master, if you had been here, my brother would not have died."
33 Kuin Jesus näki hänen itkevän ja Juudalaiset, jotka hänen kanssansa tulleet olivat, itkevän, kauhistui hän hengessä ja tuli sangen murheelliseksi,
Seeing her weeping aloud, and the Jews in like manner weeping who had come with her, Jesus, curbing the strong emotion of His spirit,
34 Ja sanoi: kuhunka te hänen panitte? He sanoivat hänelle: Herra, tule ja katso.
though deeply troubled, asked them, "Where have you laid him?" "Master, come and see," was their reply.
35 Ja Jesus itki.
Jesus wept.
36 Niin sanoivat Juudalaiset: katso, kuinka hän rakasti häntä.
"See how dear he held him," said the Jews.
37 Mutta muutamat heistä sanoivat: eikö tämä, joka sokian silmät avasi, tainnut tehdä, ettei tämäkään kuollut olisi?
But others of them asked, "Was this man who opened the blind man's eyes unable to prevent this man from dying?"
38 Niin Jesus kauhistui taas itsessänsä, ja tuli haudan tykö. Mutta siinä oli kuoppa, ja kivi sen päälle pantu.
Jesus, however, again restraining His strong feeling, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone had been laid against the mouth of it.
39 Jesus sanoi: ottakaat kivi pois. Sanoi hänelle Martta, sen sisar, joka kuollut oli: Herra, jo hän haisee, sillä hän on neljä päivää kuolleena ollut.
"Take away the stone," said Jesus. Martha, the sister of the dead man, exclaimed, "Master, by this time there is a foul smell; for it is three days since he died."
40 Jesus sanoi hänelle: enkö minä sinulle sanonut: jos sinä uskoisit, niin sinä näkisit Jumalan kunnian.
"Did I not promise you," replied Jesus, "that if you believe, you shall see the glory of God?"
41 Ja he ottivat kiven pois sialtansa, johon kuollut pantu oli. Niin Jesus nosti silmänsä ylös ja sanoi: Isä, minä kiitän sinua, ettäs minua kuulit.
So they removed the stone. Then Jesus lifted up His eyes and said, "Father, I thank Thee that Thou hast heard me.
42 Mutta minä tiedän myös, ettäs aina minua kuulet; vaan kansan tähden, joka tässä ympäri seisoo, sanon minä, että he uskoisivat sinun minun lähettäneeksi.
I know that Thou always hearest me; but for the sake of the crowd standing round I have said this--that they may believe that Thou didst send me."
43 Ja kuin hän nämät sanonut oli, huusi hän suurella äänellä: Latsarus, tule ulos.
After speaking thus, He called out in a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out."
44 Ja se kuollut tuli ulos sidottuna käsistä ja jaloista kääriliinalla, ja hänen kasvonsa olivat sidotut ympäri hikiliinalla. Jesus sanoi heille: päästäkäät häntä ja antakaat hänen mennä.
The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped in cloths, and his face wrapped round with a towel. "Untie him," said Jesus, "and let him go free."
45 Niin monta Juudalaista, jotka olivat Marian tykö tulleet, ja näkivät mitä Jesus teki, uskoivat hänen päällensä.
Thereupon a considerable number of the Jews--namely those who had come to Mary and had witnessed His deeds--became believers in Him;
46 Mutta muutamat heistä menivät Pharisealaisten tykö ja ilmoittivat heille, mitä Jesus oli tehnyt.
though some of them went off to the Pharisees and told them what He had done.
47 Niin ylimmäiset papit ja Pharisealaiset kokosivat neuvon, ja sanoivat: mitä me teemme? sillä tämä ihminen tekee monta ihmiettä.
Therefore the High Priests and the Pharisees held a meeting of the Sanhedrin. "What steps are we taking?" they asked one another; "for this man is performing a great number of miracles.
48 Jos me sallimme hänen niin olla, niin kaikki uskovat hänen päällensä, ja Roomalaiset tulevat ja ottavat pois sekä meidän maamme että kansamme.
If we leave him alone in this way, everybody will believe in him, and the Romans will come and blot out both our city and our nation."
49 Mutta yksi heistä, Kaiphas nimeltä, joka oli sinä vuonna ylimmäinne pappi, sanoi heille: ette mitään tiedä:
But one of them, named Caiaphas, being High Priest that year, said, "You know nothing about it.
50 Ette myös ajattele, että se on meille tarpeellinen, että yksi ihminen kuolee kansan tähden, ettei kaikki kansa hukkuisi.
You do not reflect that it is to your interest that one man should die for the people rather than the whole nation perish."
51 Mutta ei hän sitä itsestänsä sanonut; vaan että hän oli sinä vuonna ylimmäinen pappi, niin hän ennusti, että Jesuksen piti kuoleman kansan tähden,
It was not as a mere man that he thus spoke. But being High Priest that year he was inspired to declare that Jesus was to die for the nation,
52 Ja ei ainoastaan kansan tähden, mutta että hänen piti ne Jumalan lapset, jotka hajoitetut olivat, yhteen kokooman.
and not for the nation only, but in order to unite into one body all the far-scattered children of God.
53 Mutta siitä päivästä pitivät he yhteen neuvoa, kuolettaaksensa häntä.
So from that day forward they planned and schemed in order to put Him to death.
54 Ei siis Jesus vaeltanut enää Juudalaisten seassa julkisesti, vaan meni sieltä yhteen maan paikkaan lähes korpea, siihen kaupunkiin, joka kutsutaan Epharaim, ja oleskeli siellä opetuslastensa kanssa.
Therefore Jesus no longer went about openly among the Jews, but He left that neighbourhood and went into the district near the Desert, to a town called Ephraim, and remained there with the disciples.
55 Mutta Juudalaisten pääsiäinen lähestyi, ja monta siitä maakunnasta meni pääsiäisen edellä Jerusalemiin puhdistamaan itsiänsä.
The Jewish Passover was coming near, and many from that district went up to Jerusalem before the Passover, to purify themselves.
56 Niin he etsivät Jesusta ja puhuivat keskenänsä, seisoen templissä: mitä te luulette, ettei hän ole juhlalle tullut?
They therefore looked out for Jesus, and asked one another as they stood in the Temple, "What do you think? --will he come to the Festival at all?"
57 Ja ylimmäiset papit ja Pharisealaiset olivat käskyn antaneet, että jos joku tietäis, kussa hän olis, niin hänen piti sen ilmoittaman, että he ottaisivat hänen kiinni.
Now the High Priests and the Pharisees had issued orders that if any one knew where He was, he should give information, so that they might arrest Him.
