5 Mooseksen 19

1 Kuin Herra sinun Jumalas on hävittänyt pakanat, joiden maan Herra sinun Jumalas sinulle antaa, niitä omistaakses ja asuakses heidän kaupungeissansa ja huoneissansa,

When the LORD your God cuts off the nations whose land the LORD your God gives you, and you succeed them and dwell in their cities and in their houses,

2 Niin eroita sinulles kolme kaupunkia sen maan keskellä, jonka Herra sinun Jumalas antaa sinun omistaakses,

you shall set apart three cities for yourselves in the middle of your land, which the LORD your God gives you to possess.

3 Ja valmista sinulles tie, ja jaa maas rajat, jonka Herra sinun Jumalas sinulle antaa perinnöksi, kolmeen osaan, sen paeta, joka miesvahinkoon tullut on.

You shall prepare the way, and divide the borders of your land which the LORD your God causes you to inherit into three parts, that every man slayer may flee there.

4 Ja se olkaan miehentappajan meno, joka sinne paeta ja elää saa: joka tappaa lähimmäisensä tietämätä, ja ei ennen vihannut häntä,

This is the case of the man slayer who shall flee there and live: Whoever kills his neighbour unintentionally, and didn’t hate him in time past—

5 Vaan niinkuin joku menis metsään lähimmäisensä kanssa puita hakkaamaan, ja nostais käsin kirveensä hakkaamaan puuta maahan, ja kirves lähtis varresta, ja osais loukata lähimmäisensä niin että hän siitä kuolis: sen pitää yhteen näistä kaupungeista pakeneman ja saaman elää,

as when a man goes into the forest with his neighbour to chop wood and his hand swings the axe to cut down the tree, and the head slips from the handle and hits his neighbour so that he dies—he shall flee to one of these cities and live.

6 Ettei verenkostaja ajaisi miehentappajaa niinkauvan kuin hänen sydämensä on katkera, ja saavuttaisi häntä että matka pitkä on, ja löis hänen kuoliaaksi, vaikka ei hän kuoleman syytä ole tehnyt; sillä ei hän ennen vihannut häntä.

Otherwise, the avenger of blood might pursue the man slayer while hot anger is in his heart and overtake him, because the way is long, and strike him mortally, even though he was not worthy of death, because he didn’t hate him in time past.

7 Sentähden käsken minä sinua, sanoen: eroita sinulles kolme kaupunkia.

Therefore I command you to set apart three cities for yourselves.

8 Ja jos Herra sinun Jumalas sinun maas rajat levittää, niinkuin hän vannoi isilles, ja antaa sinulle kaiken sen maan, jonka hän lupasi isilles antaa,

If the LORD your God enlarges your border, as he has sworn to your fathers, and gives you all the land which he promised to give to your fathers;

9 Jos muutoin pidät kaikki nämät käskyt, ja teet sen jälkeen kuin minä sinulle tänäpänä käsken, ettäs rakastat Herraa sinun Jumalaas ja vaellat hänen teissänsä kaikkena elinaikanas: niin lisää vielä kolme kaupunkia näihin kolmeen,

and if you keep all this commandment to do it, which I command you today, to love the LORD your God, and to walk ever in his ways, then you shall add three cities more for yourselves, in addition to these three.

10 Ettei viatointia verta vuodatettaisi sinun maassas, jonka Herra sinun Jumalas sinulle antaa perinnöksi, ja veren vika tulisi sinun päälles.

This is so that innocent blood will not be shed in the middle of your land which the LORD your God gives you for an inheritance, leaving blood guilt on you.

11 Mutta jos joku vihaa lähimmäistänsä ja väijyy häntä ja karkaa hänen päällensä ja tappaa hänen, ja se pakenee yhteen niistä kaupungeista;

But if any man hates his neighbour, lies in wait for him, rises up against him, strikes him mortally so that he dies, and he flees into one of these cities;

12 Niin vanhimmat hänen kaupungistansa lähettäkään sinne sanan, ja tuokaan hänen sieltä, ja antakaan hänen verenkostajan käsiin, että hän kuolis.

then the elders of his city shall send and bring him there, and deliver him into the hand of the avenger of blood, that he may die.

13 Ei sinun silmäs pidä armaitseman häntä, ja sinun pitää ottaman pois viattoman veren Israelista, ettäs menestyisit.

Your eye shall not pity him, but you shall purge the innocent blood from Israel that it may go well with you.

14 Ei sinun pidä siirtämän lähimmäises rajaa, jonka entiset panneet ovat sinun perintöös, kuin sinä perit siinä maassa, jonka Herra sinun Jumalas sinulle antaa omistaakses.

You shall not remove your neighbour’s landmark, which they of old time have set, in your inheritance which you shall inherit, in the land that the LORD your God gives you to possess.

15 Ei pidä todistajan yksinänsä astuman edes ketäkään vastaan, jostakusta pahasta teosta ja synnistä, mikä ikänä paha teko se olis joka tehdään; mutta kahden eli kolmen todistajan suussa ovat kaikki asiat vahvat.

One witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity, or for any sin that he sins. At the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall a matter be established.

16 Jos väärä todistaja tulee ja todistaa jotakuta vastaan ja soimaa hänelle jotain syntiä,

If an unrighteous witness rises up against any man to testify against him of wrongdoing,

17 Niin molemmat ne miehet, jotka riitelevät, seisokaan Herran edessä, pappein ja tuomarein edessä, jotka siihen aikaan ovat,

then both the men, between whom the controversy is, shall stand before the LORD, before the priests and the judges who shall be in those days;

18 Ja tuomarit visusti tutkistelkaan sitä, ja katso, jos todistaja on väärä todistaja, ja todistaa väärin veljeänsä vastaan;

and the judges shall make diligent inquisition; and behold, if the witness is a false witness, and has testified falsely against his brother,

19 Niin tehkäät hänelle niinkuin hän aikoi tehdä veljellensä, ettäs erottaisit pahan sinustas,

then you shall do to him as he had thought to do to his brother. So you shall remove the evil from amongst you.

20 Ja muut sen kuulisivat ja pelkäisivät, ja ei tekisi enää senkaltaista pahaa teidän seassanne.

Those who remain shall hear, and fear, and will never again commit any such evil amongst you.

21 Sinun silmäs ei pidä säästämän häntä: henki hengestä, silmä silmästä, hammas hampaasta, käsi kädestä, jalka jalasta.

Your eyes shall not pity: life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.
