1 Kuin siis Festus oli tullut maakuntaan, meni hän Kesareasta kolmannen päivän perästä ylös Jerusalemiin.
Festus therefore having come into the province, after three days went up from Caesarea to Jerusalem.
2 Niin ylimmäinen pappi ja ylimmäiset Juudalaisista tulivat hänen eteensä Paavalia vastaan, ja rukoilivat häntä,
And the chief priests and the leaders of the Jews brought a complaint before him against Paul, and besought him,
3 Ja pyysivät häneltä suosiota häntä kohtaan, että hän kutsuttais hänen Jerusalemiin, ja väijyivät häntä tappaaksensa tiellä.
asking for themselves a favor against him, that he would send for him to Jerusalem, intending to place men in wait to kill him on the road.
4 Niin Festus vastasi, että Paavali piti hyvin kätkettämän Kesareassa, ja että hän tahtoi itse pian sinne vaeltaa.
But Festus answered that Paul was in custody at Caesarea, and that he himself was going thither shortly.
5 Jotka siis teidän seassanne, sanoi hän, voimalliset ovat, ne tulkaan alas meidän kanssamme, ja jos jotakin vääryyttä on tässä miehessä, niin kantakaan he hänen päällensä.
Let those therefore, said he, who have authority among you, go down with me and accuse this man, if he is guilty of anything.
6 Kuin hän siis oli heidän tykönänsä viipynyt enempi kuin kymmenen päivää, läksi hän alas Kesareaan. Ja toisena päivänä istui hän tuomioistuimelle ja käski Paavalin tuoda edes.
And having tarried among them not more than eight or ten days, he went down to Caesarea; and on the morrow, sitting on the judgment-seat, ordered Paul to be brought.
7 Kuin hän oli tullut edes, seisoivat ne Juudalaiset ympärillä, jotka olivat Jerusalemista tulleet alas, ja toivat edes monta ja suurta vikaa Paavalia vastaan, joita ei he voineet vahvistaa;
And when he had come, the Jews who came down from Jerusalem stood around, bringing many and heavy charges which they could not prove;
8 Sillä hän vastasi edestänsä: en minä ole mitään rikkonut Juudalaisten lakia, en templiä, enkä keisaria vastaan.
while Paul said in his defence, Neither against the law of the Jews, nor against the temple, nor against Caesar have I committed any offence.
9 Niin Festus tahtoi Juudalaisten mieltä noutaa, vastasi Paavalia ja sanoi: tahdotkos mennä ylös Jerusalemiin ja siellä näistä oikeudella seisoa minun edessäni?
But Festus, wishing to gain favor with the Jews, answered Paul and said, Art thou willing to go up to Jerusalem, and there be tried on these charges before me?
10 Mutta Paavali sanoi: minä seison keisarin oikeudessa, ja siinä tulee minua tuomita: en minä ole Juudalaisille mitään vääryyttä tehnyt, kuin sinä itsekin paremmin tiedät.
But Paul said, I stand at the judgment-seat of Caesar, where I ought to be tried. To the Jews I have done no wrong, as thou also very well knowest.
11 Sillä jos minä olen jonkun vahingoittanut, eli minun henkeni rikkonut, niin en minä tahdo välttää kuolemaa: jos ei taas mitään niistä ole, mitä he minun päälleni kantavat, niin ei yksikään taida minua antaa heidän käsiinsä: minä turvaan keisariin.
If indeed I am an offender, and have done anything deserving death, I refuse not to die; but if there be nothing in the charges which they bring against me, no man can give me up to them. I appeal to Caesar.
12 Silloin Festus puhutteli raatia ja vastasi: keisariin sinä turvasit, keisarin tykö pitää myös sinun menemän.
Then Festus having conferred with the council, answered, Thou hast appealed to Caesar; to Caesar shalt thou go.
13 Mutta kuin muutamat päivät olivat kuluneet, tuli kuningas Agrippa ja Bernise alas Kesareaan Festusta tervehtimään.
And after some days Agrippa the king and Bernice came to Caesarea to greet Festus.
14 Ja kuin he siellä monta päivää viipyivät, jutteli Festus Paavalin asian kuninkaalle ja sanoi: yksi mies on jäänyt Felikseltä sidottuna,
And while they were making a stay of some days there, Festus laid the case of Paul before the king, saying, There is a certain man left in bonds by Felix,
15 Josta, kuin minä Jerusalemissa olin, ylimmäiset papit ja Juudalaisten vanhimmat tulivat ja ilmoittivat minulle, pyytäin tuomiota hänen ylitsensä.
against whom, when I was at Jerusalem, the chief priests and the elders of the Jews brought a complaint, asking for judgment against him.
16 Joille minä vastasin: ei se ole Roomalaisten tapa, että joku ihminen ennen annetaan surmata, kuin se, jonka päälle kannetaan, saa päällekantajat rinnallensa ja saa tilan edestänsä vastata kanteesta.
To whom I answered, It is not the custom of the Romans to give up any man on a charge, before the accused hath the accusers face to face, and hath opportunity to answer for himself concerning the crime laid against him.
17 Sentähden kuin he tänne kokoon tulivat, istuin minä kohta toisena päivänä viivyttelemättä tuomio-istuimelle, ja käskin miehen tuoda edes.
When therefore they had come together here, without any delay I sat on the judgment-seat on the day after, and ordered the man to be brought forward.
18 Kuin päällekantajat tulivat, niin ei he yhtään syytä tuoneet edes niistä, mitä minä luulin.
And his accusers standing around him brought no accusation of such things as I had conjectured,
19 Mutta heillä oli muutamia kysymyksiä häntä vastaan heidän taikauksistansa ja yhdestä kuolleesta Jesuksesta, jonka Paavali todisti elävän.
but had against him certain questions of their own religion, and of one Jesus that was dead, whom Paul affirmed to be alive.
20 Vaan että minä siitä kysymyksestä epäilin, kysyin minä, josko hän olis tahtonut mennä Jerusalemiin ja siellä näistä tuomittaa.
And I being at a loss about such questions, asked him if he was willing to go to Jerusalem and there be put on trial for these matters.
21 Mutta koska Paavali lykkäsi asiansa keisarin tutkimisen alle, annoin minä hänen kätkettää, siihen asti kuin minä hänen keisarin tykö lähettäisin.
But Paul having appealed to be kept in custody for the judgment of Augustus, I ordered him to be kept till I should send him up to Caesar.
22 Niin Agrippa sanoi Festukselle: minäkin kuulisin mielelläni sitä miestä. Hän sanoi: huomenna saat sinä häntä kuulla.
Then Agrippa said to Festus, I should like to hear the man myself. Tomorrow, said he, thou shalt hear him.
23 Ja toisena päivänä tuli Agrippa ja Bernise suurella koreudella, ja menivät raastupaan, päämiesten ja kaupungin ylimmäisten kanssa, ja Paavali tuotiin edes Festuksen käskyn jälkeen.
Accordingly on the morrow Agrippa and Bernice came with great pomp, and entered into the place of hearing, with the chief captains and principal men of the city, and at the order of Festus Paul was brought forward.
24 Ja Festus sanoi: kuningas Agrippa ja kaikki miehet, jotka tässä meidän kanssamme olette, te näette sen, josta kaikki Juudalaisten joukko on minua rukoillut Jerusalemissa ja myös täällä, huutain, ettei hänen pitäisi enempi elämän.
And Festus said: King Agrippa, and all men who are here present with us! Ye see this man about whom the whole multitude of the Jews applied to me both at Jerusalem and here, crying out that he ought no longer to live.
25 Mutta kuin minä ymmärsin, ettei hän ollut mitään kuoleman ansiota tehnyt, ja että hän myös itse turvasi keisariin, niin minä aioin hänen sinne lähettää.
But having found that he had done nothing deserving death, and he himself having appealed to Augustus, I determined to send him;
26 Josta ei minulla ole mitään vahvaa herralle kirjoittaa: sentähden tuotin minä hänen teidän eteenne, ja enimmiten sinun etees, kuningas Agrippa, että kuin hänen asiansa visummasti tutkittaisiin, minulla olis jotakin kirjoittamista;
and as I have nothing certain to write about him to the emperor, I have brought him forward before you, and specially before thee, king Agrippa, that when the examination hath been made, I may have something to write.
27 Sillä se on minun nähdäkseni toimetoin, että hän sidottuna lähetetään, ja ei hänen syytänsä ilmoiteta.
For it seemeth to me unreasonable to send a prisoner and not signify the charges against him;
