1 Ja Siphiläiset tulivat Saulin tykö Gibeaan ja sanoivat: eikö David ole lymyssä Hakilan kukkulalla korven kohdalla?

Then the Ziphites came to Saul at Gibeah, saying, "Look, David is hiding himself on the hill of Hakilah, which is near Jeshimon."

2 Niin nousi Saul ja meni Siphin korpeen, ja hänen kanssansa kolmetuhatta valittua miestä Israelista, etsimään Davidia Siphin korvesta.

Then Saul arose, and went down to the wilderness of Ziph, having three thousand chosen men of Israel with him, to seek David in the wilderness of Ziph.

3 Ja Saul sioitti itsensä Hakilan kukkulalle korven kohdalle tien viereen, mutta David pysyi korvessa ja näki Saulin tulevan perässänsä korpeen.

Saul camped on the hill of Hakilah, which is before Jeshimon, near the road. But David stayed in the wilderness, and he saw that Saul came after him into the wilderness.

4 Niin David lähetti vakoojat ja ymmärsi Saulin totisesti tulleen.

David therefore sent out spies, and understood that Saul had certainly come.

5 Ja David nousi ja tuli siihen paikkaan, johonka Saul itsensä sioittanut oli; ja David näki paikan, kussa Saul ja hänen sotapäämiehensä Abner Neerin poika oli; sillä Saul makasi vaunuin piirissä, ja sotaväki sioitettuna hänen ympärillänsä.

David arose, and came to the place where Saul had camped; and David saw the place where Saul lay, and Abner the son of Ner, the captain of his army: and Saul lay within the place of the wagons, and the people were camped around him.

6 Silloin vastasi David ja sanoi Ahimelekille, Hetiläiselle, ja Abisaille ZeruJan pojalle Joabin veljelle: kuka menee minun kanssani Saulin tykö leiriin? Abisai sanoi: minä menen kanssas.

Then answered David and said to Ahimelech the Hethite, and to Abishai the son of Zeruiah, brother to Joab, saying, "Who will go down with me to Saul to the camp?" Abishai said, "I will go down with you."

7 Niin tuli David ja Abisai kansan tykö yöllä, ja katso, Saul makasi nukkuneena vaunuin piirissä, ja hänen keihäänsä pistetty maahan hänen päänsä pohjaan; mutta Abner ja kansa makasi hänen ympärillänsä.

So David and Abishai came to the people by night: and, look, Saul lay sleeping within the place of the wagons, with his spear stuck in the ground at his head; and Abner and the people lay around him.

8 Silloin sanoi Abisai Davidille: Jumala on sulkenut tänäpänä vihamiehes sinun kätees: nyt minä syöksen häntä keihäällä maata vasten yhden kerran, niin etten minä enään tarvitse kertoa sitä.

Then Abishai said to David, "God has delivered up your enemy into your hand this day. Now therefore please let me strike him with the spear to the earth at one stroke, and I will not strike him the second time."

9 Mutta David sanoi Abisaille: älä surmaa häntä; sillä kuka satuttaa kätensä Herran voideltuun ja on viatoin?

David said to Abishai, "Do not destroy him; for who can put forth his hand against YHWH's anointed, and be guiltless?"

10 Vielä sanoi David: niin totta kuin Herra elää; jollei Herra lyö häntä, elikkä tule hänen aikansa kuolla, eli mene sotaann ja huku,

David said, "As YHWH lives, YHWH will strike him; or his day shall come to die; or he shall go down into battle and perish.

11 Niin antakoon Herra kaukana olla minusta, että minä satuttaisin käteni Herran voideltuun: ota nyt vaivoin keihäs hänen päänsä pohjasta ja vesimalja, ja käykäämme.

YHWH forbid that I should put forth my hand against YHWH's anointed; but now please take the spear that is at his head, and the jar of water, and let us go."

12 Niin otti David keihään ja vesimaljan Saulin pään pohjasta, ja he menivät matkaansa; ja ei yhtään ollut, joka sen näki taikka huomaitsi, eli heräsi, vaan he makasivat kaikki nukkuneena, sillä Herralta oli tullut syvä uni heidän päällensä.

So David took the spear and the jar of water at his head, and they went away. And no one saw it or knew about it, nor did any awake. For they were all asleep, because a deep sleep from YHWH had fallen on them.

13 Kuin David oli tullut ylitse toiselle puolelle, meni hän kauvas vuoren kukkulalle, että iso väli oli heidän välillänsä.

Then David crossed over to the other side and stood on the top of the hill some distance away; there was a great distance between them.

14 Ja David huusi kansalle ja Abnerille Neerin pojalle ja sanoi: etkös vastaa, Abner? Abner vastasi ja sanoi: kukas olet, ettäs niin huudat kuningasta?

And David called to the people, and to Abner, saying, "Will you not answer, Abner?" Then Abner replied, "Who are you that calls?"

15 Ja David sanoi Abnerille: etkös ole mies? ja kuka on sinun vertaises Israelissa? Miksi et varjellut herraas kuningasta? Sillä yksi kansasta on mennyt tappamaan kuningasta sinun herraas.

David said to Abner, "Aren't you a man? Who is like you in Israel? Why then have you not kept watch over your lord, the king? For one of the people came in to destroy the king your lord.

16 Ei se ole oikein minkä sinä tehnyt olet. Niin totta kuin Herra elää, te olette kuoleman lapset, ettette varjelleet herraanne, Herran voideltua. Ja nyt katso, kussa kuninkaan keihäs ja vesimalja on, jotka hänen päänsä pohjassa olivat?

This thing isn't good that you have done. As YHWH lives, you are worthy to die, because you have not kept watch over your lord, YHWH's anointed. Now look, where is the king's spear, and where is the jar of water that was by his head?"

17 Niin Saul tunsi Davidin äänen ja sanoi: eikö se ole sinun äänes, minun poikani David? David sanoi: minun ääneni se on, herrani kuningas.

Saul knew David's voice, and said, "Is this your voice, my son David?" David said, "It is my voice, my lord, O king."

18 Ja vielä sanoi: miksi minun herrani vainoo palveliaansa? Sillä mitä minä olen tehnyt ja mitä pahaa on minun kädessäni?

He said, "Why does my lord pursue after his servant? For what have I done? Or what evil is in my hand?

19 Niin kuulkaan siis nyt herrani kuningas palveliansa sanan: Jos Herra on yllyttänyt sinun minua vastaan, niin anna joku ruokauhri sytytettää, mutta jos ihmiset sen tekevät, niin olkoon he kirotut Herran edessä, että he tänäpänä ovat minun syösseet ulos, etten minä pysyisi Herran perimisessä, ja sanovat: mene ja palvele muukalaisia jumalia.

Now therefore, please let my lord the king hear the words of his servant. If it is so that God has stirred you up against me, let him accept an offering. But if it is from human beings, they are cursed before YHWH; for they have driven me out this day that I shouldn't cling to YHWH's inheritance, saying, 'Go, serve other gods.'

20 Niin älköön minun vereni langatko maahan Herran eteen; sillä Israelin kuningas on lähtenyt yhtä kirppua etsimään, niinkuin hän takaa ajelis peltokanaa vuorilla.

Now therefore, do not let my blood fall to the earth away from the presence of YHWH; for the king of Israel has come out to seek my life, as when one hunts a partridge in the mountains."

21 Ja Saul sanoi: minä olen syntiä tehnyt. Tule jälleen poikani David! sillä en minä sinulle enää tee pahaa, että minun sieluni on tänäpänä ollut kallis sinun silmäis edessä: katso, minä olen tehnyt tyhmästi ja sangen hullusti.

Then Saul said, "I have sinned. Come back, my son David, for I will not harm you, because my life was precious in your eyes this day. Look, I have behaved foolishly, and have made a great mistake."

22 David vastasi ja sanoi: katso, tässä on kuninkaan keihäs, tulkaan yksi palvelioistas tänne ja ottakaan sen.

And David answered and said, "Look, the king's spear. Now let one of the young men come over and get it.

23 Herra maksaa jokaiselle hänen vanhurskautensa ja uskonsa jälkeen; sillä Herra on sinun tänäpänä antanut minun käteeni, vaan en minä tahtonut satuttaa kättäni Herran voideltuun.

YHWH will render to every man his righteousness and his faithfulness; because YHWH delivered you into my hand today, and I wouldn't put forth my hand against YHWH's anointed.

24 Ja katso, niinkuin sinun sielus tänäpänä on paljo pidettävä ollut minun silmäini edessä, niin olkoon myös minun sieluni paljo pidettävä Herran silmäin edessä, ja vapahtakoon minua kaikesta minun murheestani.

Look, as your life was respected this day in my eyes, so let my life be respected in the eyes of YHWH, and let him deliver me out of all oppression."

25 Saul sanoi Davidille: siunattu ole sinä, poikani David: sinä teet ja toimitat, sinä taidat ja voit. Niin David meni matkaansa, ja Saul palasi kotiansa.

Then Saul said to David, "You are blessed, my son. You will accomplish much, and will surely be successful." So David went his way, and Saul returned to his place.
