1 Pietari, Jesuksen Kristuksen apostoli, valituille muukalaisille, hajalla asuvaisille Pontossa, Galatiassa, Kappadokiassa, Asiassa ja Bityniassa,
Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to the elect who are sojourners of the dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Roman Asia, and Bithynia,
2 Isän Jumalan aivoituksen jälkeen Hengen pyhittämisen kautta, kuuliaisuuteen ja Jesuksen Kristuksen veren priiskottamiseen: armo ja rauha lisääntyköön teille!
according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in the sanctification of the spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ; Grace and peace be multiplied to you.
3 Kiitetty olkoon Jumala ja meidän Herran Jesuksen Kristuksen Isä, joka meitä suuresta laupiudestansa on synnyttänyt jälleen elävään toivoon, Jesuksen Kristuksen ylösnousemisen kautta kuolleista,
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whose great mercy we have been born anew into a living hope, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead;
4 Katoomattomaan ja saastuttamattomaan ja turmelemattomaan perintöön, joka taivaassa tähdelle pantu on teitä varten,
and into an inheritance imperishable and undefiled and fadeless, which has been kept in heaven for you
5 Jotka Jumalan väellä uskon kautta autuuteen kätketään, joka sitä varten valmistettu on, että se viimeisellä ajalla ilmi tulis.
who, through faith, are continuously guarded by the power of God for a salvation, ready to be revealed in the last days.
6 Jossa te saatte iloita, te, joita nyt vähän aikaa, (jos tarvitaan, ) moninaisilla kiusauksilla vaivataan:
Exult in this, though now for a brief moment, if need be, you have suffered many hardships.
7 Että teidän uskonne koettelemus paljoa kalliimmaksi löydettäisiin kuin katoova kulta, joka tulessa koetellaan, kiitokseksi, ylistykseksi ja kunniaksi, koska Jesus Kristus ilmaantuu,
These are in order that the test of your faith, more precious than gold that is perishable and yet is tested by fire, may redound to praise and glory and honor, at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
8 Jota te rakastatte, vaikka ette häntä näe, jonka päälle te myös uskotte, ehkette nyt häntä näe, niin te kuitenkin saatte iloita sanomattomalla ja kunniallisella ilolla,
Him you love, though you have never seen him; in him you ever believe, though even now you see him not, and you are rejoicing with joy unspeakable and full of glory,
9 Ja käsitätte teidän uskonne lopun, sieluin autuuden,
as you continually receive the reward of your faith, even the salvation of your souls.
10 Jota autuutta prophetat ovat etsineet ja tutkineet, jotka teille tulevaista armoa ennustaneet ovat;
Concerning this salvation the Prophets who prophesied regarding the grace intended for you, diligently sought and searched.
11 Ja ovat tutkineet, millä taikka minkäkaltaisella ajalla Kristuksen Henki, joka heissä oli, ilmoitti, joka oli jo ennen todistanut niistä vaivoista, jotka Kristuksessa ovat, ja siitä kunniasta, joka niiden jälkeen tapahtuva oli:
They were searching to know to what time, or to what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them kept pointing, when he ever testified beforehand concerning the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow.

It was revealed to them that it was not for themselves, but for you, that they were ministering the truths which have now been announced to you, by those who preached the gospel to you, through the help of the Holy Spirit sent forth from heaven - truths into which angels long to look.
13 Sentähden vyöttäkäät mielenne kupeet, olkaa raittiit, pankaat täydellinen toivonne siihen armoon, joka teille Jesuksen Kristuksen ilmestyksen kautta taritaan,
So then brace up your minds, be steady in spirit, and fix your hope firmly in the grace that is coming to you, at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
14 Niinkuin kuuliaiset lapset, ei asettaen teitänne niinkuin ennen, kuin te teidän tyhmyydessänne himoissa elitte,
Like obedient children, do not fashion yourselves according to the former passions of your days of ignorance,
15 Vaan sen jälkeen, joka teitä kutsunut on, ja on pyhä, olkaat te myös pyhät kaikissa teidän menoissanne.
but become yourselves holy in your whole manner of living, as He who has called you is holy,
16 Sillä kirjoitettu on: teidän pitää pyhät oleman, sillä minä olen pyhä.
as the Scripture says, You shall be holy, because I am holy.
17 Ja jos te rukoilette sitä Isää, joka tuomitsee kunkin töidensä jälkeen ilman ihmisten muodon katsomista, niin katsokaat, että te teidän viipymisenne ajan pelvossa vaeltaisitte,
And since you call upon him as Father, who impartially judges each one according to his deeds, pass the time of your sojourning here in reverence.
18 Tietäen, ettette ole katoovaisella hopialla eli kullalla lunastetut teidän turhasta menostanne, jonka te isäin säädystä saitte,
For you well know that not with perishable things, with silver or gold, were you redeemed from the emptiness of your manner of life, received by tradition from your ancestors;
19 Vaan kalliilla Kristuksen verellä, niinkuin viattoman ja puhtaan Karitsan;
but with precious blood, like that of a lamb without spot or blemish, even the blood of Christ.
20 Joka tosin jo ennen oli aivottu kuin maailman perustus pantu oli, mutta ilmoitettu viimeisinä aikoina teidän tähtenne,
He was indeed foreknown before the foundation of the world, but was manifested at the end of the times for your sake.
21 Jotka hänen kauttansa uskotte Jumalan päälle, joka hänen kuolleista herätti ja hänelle kunnian antoi, että teillä olis usko ja toivo Jumalan päälle.
Through him you believe in God who raised him from the dead and gave him glory; so that your faith and hope are now in God.
22 Ja tehkäät puhtaaksi teidän sielunne totuuden kuuliaisuudessa, Hengen kautta, veljelliseen rakkauteen, joka vilpitöin olis, ja olkaat keskenänne palavaisessa rakkaudessa puhtaasta sydämestä,
Now that by obedience to the truth you have purified your lives for a brotherly love without hypocrisy, you must love one another from your hearts, fervently.
23 Niinkuin ne, jotka jälleen syntyneet ovat, ei katoovaisesta, vaan katoomattomasta siemenestä, elävästä Jumalan sanasta, joka ijankaikkisesti pysyy. (aiōn g165)
For you have been born anew, not of perishable, but of imperishable seed, by the living, lasting word of God. (aiōn g165)
24 Sillä kaikki liha on niinkuin ruoho ja kaikki ihmisen kunnia niinkuin ruohon kukkanen. Ruoho on kuivunut, ja sen kukkanen lakastunut;
For, All flesh is grass And all its glory like the flower of the grass. The grass fades, The flower falls,
