And in the fifteenth year of the government of Tiberius Caesar — Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod tetrarch of Galilee, and Philip his brother, tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene —
2 esime Anas kple Kayafa wonye nunɔlagãwo la, Mawu ƒe nya va na Yohanes, ame si nye Zekaria ƒe vi la le gbedzi.
Annas and Caiaphas being chief priests — there came a word of God unto John the son of Zacharias, in the wilderness,
3 Yohanes nɔ tsatsam tso teƒe yi teƒe le Yɔdan tɔsisi la ƒe go eveawo dzi, nɔ mawunya gblɔm be amewo nede tsi ta; ne wòafia be wotrɔ dzi me, ale be wòatsɔ woƒe nu vɔ̃wo ake wo.
and he came to all the region round the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of reformation — to remission of sins,
4 Abe ale si woŋlɔe le Nyagblɔɖila Yesaya ƒe nyagblɔɖigbalẽ me ene be, “Ame si le ɣli dom tso gbea dzi ƒe gbee nye esi, ‘Miɖe mɔ na Yehowa be wòazɔ edzi! Miwɔ eƒe mɔwo dzɔdzɔe.
as it hath been written in the scroll of the words of Isaiah the prophet, saying, 'A voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, straight make ye His paths;
5 Balimewo katã akɔ kpo, eye woabɔbɔ to kple togbɛ ɖe sia ɖe ɖe anyi. Mixe ʋe siwo le baliwo me! Miwɔ mɔ gɔglɔ̃wo woadzɔ! Miwɔ mɔ tsakliwo zɔzrɔ̃e.
every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be made low, and the crooked shall become straightness, and the rough become smooth ways;
6 Ekema amegbetɔƒomea katã akpɔ ɖeɖe si Mawu ɖo ɖa la.’”
and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.'
7 Yohanes gblɔ mawunya na ame siwo vaa egbɔ be wòade mawutsi ta na yewo be, “Ame kae xlɔ̃ nu mi dawo ƒe dzidzimeviwo be miasi le Mawu ƒe dɔmedzoe si gbɔna la nu?
Then said he to the multitudes coming forth to be baptised by him, 'Brood of vipers! who did prompt you to flee from the coming wrath?
8 Gbã la, miyi ne miaɖee fia be yewotrɔ dzi me to agbe nyui nɔnɔ me. Migabu be nya vɔ̃ aɖeke madzɔ ɖe mia dzi, elabena mienye Abraham ƒe dzidzimeviwo ta o. Esia ɖeɖe menye naneke o, elabena Mawu ate ŋu ana kpe siawo natrɔ zu viwo na Abraham.
make, therefore, fruits worthy of the reformation, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have a father — Abraham; for I say to you, that God is able out of these stones to raise children to Abraham;
9 Woɖo ʋɔnudɔdrɔ̃ ƒe fiá atiwo ƒe kewo dzi. Ɛ̃, le nyateƒe me la, ati sia ati si metse ku nyui o la, woalãe ƒu anyi, eye woatsɔe ade dzo me.”
and already also the axe unto the root of the trees is laid, every tree, therefore, not making good fruit is cut down, and to fire it is cast.'
10 Ameha la ɖo eŋu nɛ be, “Nu ka nèdi tso mía si be míawɔ?”
And the multitudes were questioning him, saying, 'What, then, shall we do?'
11 Yohanes ɖo eŋu na wo be, “Ne awu eve le ame aɖe si la, nena ame si ɖeke mele esi o, eye ame si si nuɖuɖu le la newɔ nenema ke.”
and he answering saith to them, 'He having two coats — let him impart to him having none, and he having victuals — in like manner let him do.'
12 Dugadzɔla siwo nye amebala vɔ̃ɖiwo la gɔ̃ hã va do ɖe egbɔ be wòade mawutsi ta na yewo. Wobiae be, “Nufiala nu ka míawɔ?”
And there came also tax-gatherers to be baptised, and they said unto him, 'Teacher, what shall we do?'
13 Yohanes ɖo eŋu na wo be, “Mito nyateƒe le miaƒe dugadzɔdzɔ me. Mikpɔ nyuie be miagadzɔ ga le ame aɖeke si wu ale si woɖo na mi la o.”
and he said unto them, 'Exact no more than that directed you.'
14 Asrafo aɖewo siwo le afi ma la biae be, “Míawo ya ɖe aleke míawɔ?” Yohanes ɖo eŋu na wo be, “Migaxɔ ga le amewo si akpasesẽtɔe o. Ne mienya be ame aɖe mewɔ nane o la, migahe nya ɖe eŋu alakpatɔe o. Fetu si miexɔna la hã nedze mia ŋu!”
And questioning him also were those warring, saying, 'And we, what shall we do?' and he said unto them, 'Do violence to no one, nor accuse falsely, and be content with your wages.'
15 Ame sia ame kloe nɔ mɔ kpɔm be ava kpuie le ŋkeke mawo me, ale be wotsi dzi vevie be yewoanya nenye be Yohanes ye nye Kristo loo alo menye eyae o?
And the people are looking forward, and all are reasoning in their hearts concerning John, whether or not he may be the Christ;
16 Yohanes ɖo woƒe biabia la ŋu hegblɔ na wo be, “Nye la, tsi metsɔ le tsi dem ta na amewoe, gake ame aɖe gbɔna kpuie, ame si si ŋusẽ le wum boo, ame si nyemedze ŋutɔ gɔ̃ hã be matu eƒe atokotawo nu ka o. Eya ade mawutsi ta na mi kple dzo kple Gbɔgbɔ Kɔkɔe.
John answered, saying to all, 'I indeed with water do baptise you, but he cometh who is mightier than I, of whom I am not worthy to loose the latchet of his sandals — he shall baptise you with the Holy Spirit and with fire;
17 Ame si si lugbɔnu le, be wòatsɔ akplɔ eƒe lugbɔƒe ƒiaƒiaƒia, alɔ lu la ɖe eƒe ava me. Ke atɔ dzo tsroa kple dzo matsimatsi.”
whose winnowing shovel [is] in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his floor, and will gather the wheat to his storehouse, and the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.'
18 Yohanes xlɔ̃ nu amewo vevie kple nya siawo esime wònɔ nyanyui la gblɔm na wo.
And, therefore, indeed with many other things, exhorting, he was proclaiming good news to the people,
19 Yohanes he nya ɖe Herod si nye dziɖula nɔ Galilea ŋu le dutoƒe, elabena exɔ nɔvia srɔ̃ Herodia ɖe. Hekpe ɖe nu vɔ̃ bubu geɖe siwo hã wòwɔ ŋu la,
and Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him concerning Herodias the wife of Philip his brother, and concerning all the evils that Herod did,
20 Herod lé Yohanes hã de gaxɔ me.
added also this to all, that he shut up John in the prison.
21 Gbe ɖeka la, Yesu ŋutɔ hã va ge ɖe ame siwo Yohanes nɔ mawutsi dem ta na la dome. Yohanes de mawutsi ta nɛ, eye esi Yesu nɔ gbe dom ɖa la, dziƒowo nu ʋu,
And it came to pass, in all the people being baptised, Jesus also being baptised, and praying, the heaven was opened,
22 eye Gbɔgbɔ Kɔkɔe la ɖiɖi ɖe edzi le akpakpa ƒe nɔnɔme me, eye gbe aɖe ɖi tso dziƒo be, “Wòe nye vinye si gbɔ nyemelɔ̃a nu le o, wò me mekpɔa ŋudzedze le.”
and the Holy Spirit came down in a bodily appearance, as if a dove, upon him, and a voice came out of heaven, saying, 'Thou art My Son — the Beloved, in thee I did delight.'
23 Yesu xɔ abe ƒe blaetɔ̃ ene hafi dze mawunyagbɔgblɔ gɔme le dutoƒo. Amewo nya Yesu abe Yosef ƒe vi ene. Yosef fofoe nye Heli,
And Jesus himself was beginning to be about thirty years of age, being, as was supposed, son of Joseph,
24 Heli fofoe nye Matat, Matat fofoe nye Levi, Levi fofoe nye Melki, Melki fofoe nye Yanai, Yanai fofoe nye Yosef,
the [son] of Eli, the [son] of Matthat, the [son] of Levi, the [son] of Melchi, the [son] of Janna, the [son] of Joseph,
25 Yosef fofoe nye Matatias, Matatias fofoe nye Amos, Amos fofoe nye Nahum, Nahum fofoe nye Esli, Esli fofoe nye Nagai,
the [son] of Mattathias, the [son] of Amos, the [son] of Naum, the [son] of Esli,
26 Nagai fofoe nye Mat, Mat fofoe nye Matatias, Matatias fofoe nye Semein, Semein fofoe nye Yosek, Yosek fofoe nye Yoda, Yoda fofoe nye Yoana.
the [son] of Naggai, the [son] of Maath, the [son] of Mattathias, the [son] of Semei, the [son] of Joseph, the [son] of Juda,
27 Yoana fofoe nye Resa, Resa fofoe nye Zerubabel, Zerubabel fofoe nye Sealtiel, Sealtiel fofoe nye Neri.
the [son] of Joanna, the [son] of Rhesa, the [son] of Zerubbabel, the [son] of Shealtiel,
28 Neri fofoe nye Melki, Melki fofoe nye Adi, Adi fofoe nye Kosam, Kosam fofoe nye Elmadam, Elmadam fofoe nye Er,
the [son] of Neri, the [son] of Melchi, the [son] of Addi, the [son] of Cosam, the [son] of Elmodam, the [son] of Er,
29 Er fofoe nye Yosua, Yosua fofoe nye Elieza, Elieza fofoe nye Yorim, Yorim fofoe nye Matat, Matat fofoe nye Levi,
the [son] of Jose, the [son] of Eliezer, the [son] of Jorim, the [son] of Matthat,
30 Levi fofoe nye Simeon, Simeon fofoe nye Yuda, Yuda fofoe nye Yosef, Yosef fofoe nye Yonam, Yonam fofoe nye Eliakim,
the [son] of Levi, the [son] of Simeon, the [son] of Juda, the [son] of Joseph, the [son] of Jonan, the [son] of Eliakim,
31 Eliakim fofoe nye Melea, Melea fofoe nye Mena, Mena fofoe nye Matata, Matata fofoe nye Natan, Natan fofoe nye David,
the [son] of Melea, the [son] of Mainan, the [son] of Mattatha, the [son] of Nathan,
32 David fofoe nye Yese, Yese fofoe nye Obed, Obed fofoe nye Boaz, Boaz fofoe nye Salmon, Salmon fofoe nye Naheson,
the [son] of David, the [son] of Jesse, the [son] of Obed, the [son] of Booz, the [son] of Salmon, the [son] of Nahshon,

the [son] of Amminadab, the [son] of Aram, the [son] of Esrom, the [son] of Pharez,
34 Yuda fofoe nye Yakob, Yakob fofoe nye Isak, Isak fofoe nye Abraham, Abraham fofoe Tera, Tera fofoe nye Nahɔ,
the [son] of Judah, the [son] of Jacob, the [son] of Isaac, the [son] of Abraham, the [son] of Terah, the [son] of Nahor,

the [son] of Serug, the [son] of Reu, the [son] of Peleg, the [son] of Eber,

the [son] of Salah, the [son] of Cainan, the [son] of Arphaxad, the [son] of Shem, the [son] of Noah, the [son] of Lamech,
37 Lamek fofoe nye Metusela, Metusela fofoe nye Enɔk, Enɔk fofoe nye Yared, Yared fofoe nye Mahalalel, Mahalalel fofoe nye Kenan,
the [son] of Methuselah, the [son] of Enoch, the [son] of Jared, the [son] of Mahalaleel,
38 Kenan fofoe nye Enos, Enos fofoe nye Set, Set fofoe nye Adam, Adam fofoe nye Mawu.
the [son] of Cainan, the [son] of Enos, the [son] of Seth, the [son] of Adam, the [son] of God.
