1 “Amegbetɔ si nyɔnu dzi ƒe agbemeŋkekewo le kpuie eye woyɔ fũu kple fukpekpe.
Man that is born of a woman is of few days and full of trouble.
2 Ekena abe seƒoƒo ene eye wòyrɔna, ele abe vɔvɔli si dzona kaba eye metɔna ɖi o la ene.
He comes forth like a flower, and is cut down: he flees also as a shadow, and continues not.
3 Ɖe nàke ŋku ɖe esia tɔgbi ŋua? Ɖe nàkplɔe va ʋɔnui le ŋkuwòmea?
And does you open your eyes on such an one, and bring me into judgment with you?
4 Ame ka ate ŋu aɖe nu dzadzɛ tso nu si medza o la me? Ɖeka pɛ teti hã o!
Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one.
5 Èɖo ame ƒe ŋkekewo ɖi xoxo; èɖo eƒe ɣletiwo da ɖi eye nèɖo liƒo siwo dzi mate ŋu agbɔ o la ɖi nɛ.
Seeing his days are determined, the number of his months are with you, you have appointed his bounds that he cannot pass;
6 Eya ta ɖe ŋku ɖa le eŋu eye nàɖe asi le eŋu va se ɖe esime eƒe ɣeyiɣi de abe agbatedɔwɔla ene.
Turn from him, that he may rest, till he shall accomplish, as an hireling, his day.
For there is hope of a tree, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again, and that the tender branch thereof will not cease.
8 Eƒe kewo anya do xoxo ɖe tome eye eƒe takpo aku ɖe tome,
Though the root thereof wax old in the earth, and the stock thereof die in the ground;
9 ke hã la, ne tsi nya ʋẽ ɖee ko la, egadzena eye wòtoa alɔwo abe ati si wodo ene.
Yet through the scent of water it will bud, and bring forth boughs like a plant.
10 Gake ne amegbetɔ ya ku la, wotsɔnɛ mlɔa anyie kpoo nenema; egbɔa eƒe gbɔgbɔ mamlɛa eye meganɔa agbe o.
But man dies, and wastes away: yes, man gives up the ghost, and where is he?
As the waters fail from the sea, and the flood decays and dries up:
12 nenemae amegbetɔ mlɔa anyie eye megafɔna o va se ɖe esime dziƒo nu ava yi. Amegbetɔwo magafɔ alo anyɔ tso woƒe alɔ̃dɔdɔ me o.
So man lies down, and rises not: till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep.
13 “O, ne ɖe nàɣlam ɖe yɔdo me, atsyɔ nu dzinye va se ɖe esime wò dziku nu va yi ɖe! Alo nàɖo ɣeyiɣi nam eye emegbe nàɖo ŋku dzinye ɖe! (Sheol h7585)
O that you would hide me in the grave, that you would keep me secret, until your wrath be past, that you would appoint me a set time, and remember me! (Sheol h7585)
14 Ne ame ku la, ɖe wòaganɔ agbea? Le nye ɣeyiɣi sesẽwo me hã, manɔ nye yeyewɔwɔ ƒe ŋkeke la lalam.
If a man die, shall he live again? all the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change come.
15 Àyɔm eye matɔ, wò dzi alé dzo ɖe nu si wò asiwo wɔ la ŋu.
You shall call, and I will answer you: you will have a desire to the work of your hands.
16 Ekema àxlẽ nye afɔɖeɖewo, ke menye be wò ŋku nanɔ nye nu vɔ̃wo ŋu o.
For now you number my steps: do you not watch over my sin?
17 Woatre nye dzidadawo nu ɖe akplo me eye àtsyɔ nu nye nu vɔ̃wo dzi.
My transgression is sealed up in a bag, and you sew up my iniquity.
And surely the mountains falling comes to nothing, and the rock is removed out of his place.
The waters wear the stones: you wash away the things which grow out of the dust of the earth; and you destroy the hope of man.
20 Èdzea edzi kple ŋusẽ zi ɖeka eye ɖe wòvɔnae nye ekema; ètrɔa eƒe dzedzeme henyanɛ dzonae.
You prevail for ever against him, and he passes: you change his countenance, and send him away.
21 Ne wode bubu via ŋutsuwo ŋu hã la, menyanɛ o, ne woɖi gbɔ̃ wo hã la, mekpɔnɛ o.
His sons come to honor, and he knows it not; and they are brought low, but he perceives it not of them.
But his flesh on him shall have pain, and his soul within him shall mourn.
