1 Sest see Melkisedek oli Saalemi kuningas ja Kõigekõrgema Jumala preester. Ta kohtus Aabrahamiga, kui see pöördus tagasi pärast võitu kuningate üle, ja õnnistas teda
For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of God Most High, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him,
2 ning Aabraham jagas talle ühe kümnendiku kõigest. Tema nimi tähendab kõigepealt „Õiguse kuningas“, peale selle ka Saalemi kuningas, mis tähendab „Rahu kuningas“.

3 Ta on ilma isa, ema ja sugupuuta, tema päevadel pole algust ega elul lõppu, aga sarnaselt Jumala Pojaga jääb ta preestriks igavesti.

But without any dispute the lesser is blessed by the greater.
8 Ühel juhul võtavad kümnist surelikud inimesed, teisel aga see, kelle kohta tunnistatakse, et ta elab.
Here people who die receive tithes, but there one receives tithes of whom it is testified that he lives.
9 Võiks isegi öelda, et ka Leevi, kes kogus kümnist, oli ise maksnud kümnist Aabrahami kaudu,
We can say that through Abraham even Levi, who receives tithes, has paid tithes,
10 sest ta oli alles oma esiisa niuetes, kui Melkisedek Aabrahamiga kohtus.
for he was yet in the body of his father when Melchizedek met him.
11 Niisiis, kui täiuslikkus oleks olnud saavutatav leviitide preestriameti kaudu – sellele pani ju aluse rahvale antud Seadus –, miks pidi siis veel tulema teine preester Melkisedeki korra järgi, mitte aga Aaroni korra järgi?
Now if perfection was through the Levitical priesthood (for under it the people have received the law), what further need was there for another priest to arise after the order of Melchizedek, and not be called after the order of Aaron?
12 Kui preestriamet muutub, sünnib paratamatult ka Seaduse muutmine.
For the priesthood being changed, there is of necessity a change made also in the law.
13 Sest see, kelle tulekust räägitakse, on pärit teisest suguharust, kellest veel ükski ei ole teeninud altari juures.
For he of whom these things are said belongs to another tribe, from which no one has officiated at the altar.
14 On ju teada, et meie Issand on võrsunud Juuda suguharust, kellele Mooses ei ole preestriametiks mingit korraldust andnud.
For it is evident that our Lord has sprung out of Judah, about which tribe Moses spoke nothing concerning priesthood.
15 Mis me oleme öelnud, saab veel selgemaks, kui see teistsugune preester tõuseb Melkisedeki sarnasena,
This is yet more abundantly evident, if after the likeness of Melchizedek there arises another priest,
16 olles saanud preestriks mitte maise Seaduse korralduse tõttu, vaid hävimatu elu väe tõttu.
who has been made, not after the law of a fleshly commandment, but after the power of an endless life;
17 Sest on tunnistatud: „Sina oled preester igavesti, preester Melkisedeki korra järgi.“ (aiōn )
for it is testified, "You are a priest for the age (aiōn ), according to the order of Melchizedek."
18 Eelnev korraldus kaotab kehtivuse, sest see oli jõuetu ja kasutu –
For there is an annulling of a foregoing commandment because of its weakness and uselessness
19 Seadus ei teinud ju midagi täiuslikuks –, selle asemele tuuakse aga parem lootus, mille kaudu me saame tulla Jumala ligi.
(for the law made nothing perfect), and a bringing in of a better hope, through which we draw near to God.
20 Ja seda ei tehtud ilma vandeta! Teised said preestriteks ilma vandeta,
Inasmuch as he was not made priest without the taking of an oath
21 aga tema sai preestriks vandega, kui Jumal ütles talle: „Issand on vandunud ega muuda meelt: „Sina oled igavesti preester!““ (aiōn )
(for they indeed have been made priests without an oath), but he with an oath by him that says of him, "The Lord swore and will not change his mind, 'You are a priest for the age (aiōn ), according to the order of Melchizedek.'"
22 Selle vande tõttu on Jeesus saanud parema lepingu käendajaks.
By so much, Jesus has become the guarantee of a better covenant.
23 Preestreid on tõepoolest palju olnud, sest surm ei lubanud neil ametis jätkata,
Many, indeed, have been made priests, because they are hindered from continuing by death.
24 kuid Jeesuse preestriteenistus on muutumatu, sest tema püsib igavesti. (aiōn )
But he, because he lives for the age (aiōn ), has his priesthood unchangeable.
25 Sellepärast suudab ta päästa igaveseks neid, kes tema kaudu Jumala juurde tulevad, sest ta elab alati, et nende eest paluda.
Therefore he is also able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, seeing that he lives forever to make intercession for them.
26 Just sellist ülempreestrit me vajame: tema on püha, veatu, puhas, eraldatud patustest ja ülendatud üle taevaste.
For such a high priest was fitting for us: holy, guiltless, undefiled, separated from sinners, and made higher than the heavens;
27 Erinevalt teistest ülempreestritest ei ole temal vaja päevast päeva tuua esmalt ohvreid omaenda pattude eest ja siis rahva pattude eest, sest seda ta on teinud ühe korra ja lõplikult, kui ta tõi ohvriks iseenda.
who does not need, like those high priests, to offer up sacrifices daily, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. For he did this once for all, when he offered up himself.
28 Sest Seadus seab ülempreestriteks inimesi nende nõrkuses, aga vandetõotus, mis tuli Seadusest hiljem, seab ülempreestriks Poja, kes on saanud täiuslikuks igavesti. (aiōn )
For the law appoints men as high priests who have weakness, but the word of the oath which came after the law appoints a Son for the age (aiōn ) who has been perfected.
