Proverbs 6
1 My son! if thou hast been surety for thy friend, Hast stricken for a stranger thy hand,
Mon fils, si tu t’es rendu garant pour ton ami, et que tu aies engagé à un étranger ta main,
2 Hast been snared with sayings of thy mouth, Hast been captured with sayings of thy mouth,
Tu t’es enlacé par les paroles de ta bouche, et tu as été pris par tes propres discours.
3 Do this now, my son, and be delivered, For thou hast come into the hand of thy friend. Go, trample on thyself, and strengthen thy friend,
Fais donc ce que je dis, mon fils, délivre-toi toi-même, parce que tu es tombé dans la main de ton prochain. Cours de tous côtés, hâte-toi, réveille ton ami;
4 Give not sleep to thine eyes, And slumber to thine eyelids,
N’accorde point de sommeil à tes yeux, et que tes paupières ne s’assoupissent point.
5 Be delivered as a roe from the hand, And as a bird from the hand of a fowler.
Dégage-toi, comme un petit daim qui échappe de la main, et comme un oiseau qui fuit de la main d’un oiseleur.
6 Go unto the ant, O slothful one, See her ways and be wise;
Va à la fourmi, ô paresseux, et considère ses voies, et apprends la sagesse;
7 Which hath not captain, overseer, and ruler,
La fourmi, quoiqu’elle n’ait ni chef, ni maître, ni prince,
8 She doth prepare in summer her bread, She hath gathered in harvest her food.
Prépare dans l’été sa nourriture, et rassemble durant la moisson ce qu’elle doit manger.
9 Till when, O slothful one, dost thou lie? When dost thou arise from thy sleep?
Jusqu’à quand, paresseux, dormiras-tu? quand sortiras-tu de ton sommeil?
10 A little sleep, a little slumber, A little clasping of the hands to rest,
Tu dormiras un peu, tu sommeilleras un peu, tu mettras un peu les mains l’une dans l’autre, afin que tu dormes:
11 And thy poverty hath come as a traveller, And thy want as an armed man.
Et viendra à toi, comme un coureur de chemin, la détresse; et la pauvreté comme un homme armé. Mais si tu es actif, viendra ta moisson comme une source abondante, et la détresse fuira loin de toi.
12 A man of worthlessness, a man of iniquity, Walking [with] perverseness of mouth,
Un homme apostat, homme inutile, va tenant des discours pervers,
13 Winking with his eyes, speaking with his feet, Directing with his fingers,
Fait signe des yeux, frappe du pied, parle avec un doigt,
14 Frowardness [is] in his heart, devising evil at all times, Contentions he sendeth forth.
Avec un cœur dépravé il machine le mal, et en tout temps il sème des querelles;
15 Therefore suddenly cometh his calamity, Instantly he is broken — and no healing.
En un moment lui viendra sa perte, et soudain il sera brisé, et il n’aura plus de remède.
16 These six hath Jehovah hated, Yea, seven [are] abominations to His soul.
Il y a six choses que hait le Seigneur, et la septième, son âme la déteste:
17 Eyes high — tongues false — And hands shedding innocent blood —
Des yeux altiers, une langue menteuse, des mains versant un sang innocent,
18 A heart devising thoughts of vanity — Feet hasting to run to evil —
Un cœur formant des pensées très mauvaises, des pieds prompts à courir au mal,
19 A false witness [who] doth breathe out lies — And one sending forth contentions between brethren.
Un témoin fallacieux proférant des mensonges, et celui qui, entre des frères, sème des discordes.
20 Keep, my son, the command of thy father, And leave not the law of thy mother.
Conserve, mon fils, les préceptes de ton père, et ne rejette pas la loi de ta mère.
21 Bind them on thy heart continually, Tie them on thy neck.
Lie-les dans ton cœur continuellement, et mets-les autour de ton cou.
22 In thy going up and down, it leadeth thee, In thy lying down, it watcheth over thee, And thou hast awaked — it talketh [with] thee.
Lorsque tu vas et viens, qu’ils marchent avec toi: lorsque tu dors, qu’ils te gardent, et te réveillant, parle avec eux;
23 For a lamp [is] the command, And the law a light, And a way of life [are] reproofs of instruction,
Parce qu’un commandement est un flambeau, et la loi, une lumière, et que c’est la voie de la vie qu’une remontrance de discipline;
24 To preserve thee from an evil woman, From the flattery of the tongue of a strange woman.
Afin qu’ils te préservent d’une femme corrompue et de la langue flatteuse d’une étrangère.
25 Desire not her beauty in thy heart, And let her not take thee with her eyelids.
Que ton cœur ne se passionne point pour sa beauté; et ne sois point pris par les signes de ses yeux;
26 For a harlot consumeth unto a cake of bread, And an adulteress the precious soul hunteth.
Car le prix d’une prostituée est à peine d’un pain seul; mais une femme ravit l’âme précieuse d’un homme.
27 Doth a man take fire into his bosom, And are his garments not burnt?
Est-ce qu’un homme peut cacher du feu dans son sein, sans que ses vêtements s’embrasent?
28 Doth a man walk on the hot coals, And are his feet not scorched?
Ou marcher sur des charbons ardents, sans que soient brûlées les plantes de ses pieds?
29 So [is] he who hath gone in unto the wife of his neighbour, None who doth touch her is innocent.
Ainsi celui qui s’approche de la femme de son prochain ne sera pas pur lorsqu’il l’aura touchée.
30 They do not despise the thief, When he stealeth to fill his soul when he is hungry,
Ce n’est pas une grande faute, lorsque quelqu’un dérobe afin de remplir son âme affamée;
31 And being found he repayeth sevenfold, All the substance of his house he giveth.
Pris, il rendra même le septuple, et il livrera tout ce qu’il a dans sa maison.
32 He who committeth adultery [with] a woman lacketh heart, He is destroying his soul who doth it.
Mais celui qui est adultère, à cause de son manque de cœur, perdra son âme;
33 A stroke and shame he doth find, And his reproach is not wiped away,
Il rassemble sur lui la turpitude et l’ignominie, et son opprobre ne sera pas effacé;
34 For jealousy [is] the fury of a man, And he doth not spare in a day of vengeance.
Parce que la jalousie et la fureur du mari ne pardonneront pas au jour de la vengeance,
35 He accepteth not the appearance of any atonement, Yea, he doth not consent, Though thou dost multiply bribes!
Et il n’acquiescera aux prières de personne, et il ne recevra pas pour satisfaction les dons les plus nombreux.
