Proverbs 27
1 Boast not thyself of to-morrow, For thou knowest not what a day bringeth forth.
Ne te vante pas du lendemain, Car tu ne sais pas ce qu’un jour peut enfanter.
2 Let another praise thee, and not thine own mouth, A stranger, and not thine own lips.
Qu’un autre te loue, et non ta bouche, Un étranger, et non tes lèvres.
3 A stone [is] heavy, and the sand [is] heavy, And the anger of a fool Is heavier than they both.
La pierre est pesante et le sable est lourd, Mais l’humeur de l’insensé pèse plus que l’un et l’autre.
4 Fury [is] fierce, and anger [is] overflowing, And who standeth before jealousy?
La fureur est cruelle et la colère impétueuse, Mais qui résistera devant la jalousie?
5 Better [is] open reproof than hidden love.
Mieux vaut une réprimande ouverte Qu’une amitié cachée.
6 Faithful are the wounds of a lover, And abundant the kisses of an enemy.
Les blessures d’un ami prouvent sa fidélité, Mais les baisers d’un ennemi sont trompeurs.
7 A satiated soul treadeth down a honeycomb, And [to] a hungry soul every bitter thing [is] sweet.
Celui qui est rassasié foule aux pieds le rayon de miel, Mais celui qui a faim trouve doux tout ce qui est amer.
8 As a bird wandering from her nest, So [is] a man wandering from his place.
Comme l’oiseau qui erre loin de son nid, Ainsi est l’homme qui erre loin de son lieu.
9 Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart, And the sweetness of one's friend — from counsel of the soul.
L’huile et les parfums réjouissent le cœur, Et les conseils affectueux d’un ami sont doux.
10 Thine own friend, and the friend of thy father, forsake not, And the house of thy brother enter not In a day of thy calamity, Better [is] a near neighbour than a brother afar off.
N’abandonne pas ton ami et l’ami de ton père, Et n’entre pas dans la maison de ton frère au jour de ta détresse; Mieux vaut un voisin proche qu’un frère éloigné.
11 Be wise, my son, and rejoice my heart. And I return my reproacher a word.
Mon fils, sois sage, et réjouis mon cœur, Et je pourrai répondre à celui qui m’outrage.
12 The prudent hath seen the evil, he is hidden, The simple have passed on, they are punished.
L’homme prudent voit le mal et se cache; Les simples avancent et sont punis.
13 Take his garment, when a stranger hath been surety, And for a strange woman pledge it.
Prends son vêtement, car il a cautionné autrui; Exige de lui des gages, à cause des étrangers.
14 Whoso is saluting his friend with a loud voice, In the morning rising early, A light thing it is reckoned to him.
Si l’on bénit son prochain à haute voix et de grand matin, Cela est envisagé comme une malédiction.
15 A continual dropping in a day of rain, And a woman of contentions are alike,
Une gouttière continue dans un jour de pluie Et une femme querelleuse sont choses semblables.
16 Whoso is hiding her hath hidden the wind, And the ointment of his right hand calleth out.
Celui qui la retient retient le vent, Et sa main saisit de l’huile.
17 Iron by iron is sharpened, And a man sharpens the face of his friend.
Comme le fer aiguise le fer, Ainsi un homme excite la colère d’un homme.
18 The keeper of a fig-tree eateth its fruit, And the preserver of his master is honoured.
Celui qui soigne un figuier en mangera le fruit, Et celui qui garde son maître sera honoré.
19 As [in] water the face [is] to face, So the heart of man to man.
Comme dans l’eau le visage répond au visage, Ainsi le cœur de l’homme répond au cœur de l’homme.
Le séjour des morts et l’abîme sont insatiables; De même les yeux de l’homme sont insatiables. (Sheol h7585)
21 A refining pot [is] for silver, and a furnace for gold, And a man according to his praise.
Le creuset est pour l’argent, et le fourneau pour l’or; Mais un homme est jugé d’après sa renommée.
22 If thou dost beat the foolish in a mortar, Among washed things — with a pestle, His folly turneth not aside from off him.
Quand tu pilerais l’insensé dans un mortier, Au milieu des grains avec le pilon, Sa folie ne se séparerait pas de lui.
23 Know well the face of thy flock, Set thy heart to the droves,
Connais bien chacune de tes brebis, Donne tes soins à tes troupeaux;
24 For riches [are] not to the age, Nor a crown to generation and generation.
Car la richesse ne dure pas toujours, Ni une couronne éternellement.
25 Revealed was the hay, and seen the tender grass, And gathered the herbs of mountains.
Le foin s’enlève, la verdure paraît, Et les herbes des montagnes sont recueillies.
26 Lambs [are] for thy clothing, And the price of the field [are] he-goats,
Les agneaux sont pour te vêtir, Et les boucs pour payer le champ;
27 And a sufficiency of goats' milk [is] for thy bread, For bread to thy house, and life to thy damsels!
Le lait des chèvres suffit à ta nourriture, à celle de ta maison, Et à l’entretien de tes servantes.
