Proverbs 19
1 Better [is] the poor walking in his integrity, Than the perverse [in] his lips, who [is] a fool.
Mieux vaut le pauvre qui marche dans son intégrité, Que l’homme qui a des lèvres perverses et qui est un insensé.
2 Also, without knowledge the soul [is] not good, And the hasty in feet is sinning.
Le manque de science n’est bon pour personne, Et celui qui précipite ses pas tombe dans le péché.
3 The folly of man perverteth his way, And against Jehovah is his heart wroth.
La folie de l’homme pervertit sa voie, Et c’est contre l’Éternel que son cœur s’irrite.
4 Wealth addeth many friends, And the poor from his neighbour is separated.
La richesse procure un grand nombre d’amis, Mais le pauvre est séparé de son ami.
5 A false witness is not acquitted, Whoso breatheth out lies is not delivered.
Le faux témoin ne restera pas impuni, Et celui qui dit des mensonges n’échappera pas.
6 Many entreat the face of the noble, And all have made friendship to a man of gifts.
Beaucoup de gens flattent l’homme généreux, Et tous sont les amis de celui qui fait des présents.
7 All the brethren of the poor have hated him, Surely also his friends have been far from him, He is pursuing words — they are not!
Tous les frères du pauvre le haïssent; Combien plus ses amis s’éloignent-ils de lui! Il leur adresse des paroles suppliantes, mais ils disparaissent.
8 Whoso is getting heart is loving his soul, He is keeping understanding to find good.
Celui qui acquiert du sens aime son âme; Celui qui garde l’intelligence trouve le bonheur.
9 A false witness is not acquitted, And whoso breatheth out lies perisheth.
Le faux témoin ne restera pas impuni, Et celui qui dit des mensonges périra.
10 Luxury is not comely for a fool, Much less for a servant to rule among princes.
Il ne sied pas à un insensé de vivre dans les délices; Combien moins à un esclave de dominer sur des princes!
11 The wisdom of a man hath deferred his anger, And his glory [is] to pass over transgression.
L’homme qui a de la sagesse est lent à la colère, Et il met sa gloire à oublier les offenses.
12 The wrath of a king [is] a growl as of a young lion, And as dew on the herb his good-will.
La colère du roi est comme le rugissement d’un lion, Et sa faveur est comme la rosée sur l’herbe.
13 A calamity to his father [is] a foolish son, And the contentions of a wife [are] a continual dropping.
Un fils insensé est une calamité pour son père, Et les querelles d’une femme sont une gouttière sans fin.
14 House and wealth [are] the inheritance of fathers, And from Jehovah [is] an understanding wife.
On peut hériter de ses pères une maison et des richesses, Mais une femme intelligente est un don de l’Éternel.
15 Sloth causeth deep sleep to fall, And an indolent soul doth hunger.
La paresse fait tomber dans l’assoupissement, Et l’âme nonchalante éprouve la faim.
16 Whoso is keeping the command is keeping his soul, Whoso is despising His ways dieth.
Celui qui garde ce qui est commandé garde son âme; Celui qui ne veille pas sur sa voie mourra.
17 Whoso is lending [to] Jehovah is favouring the poor, And his deed He repayeth to him.
Celui qui a pitié du pauvre prête à l’Éternel, Qui lui rendra selon son œuvre.
18 Chastise thy son, for there is hope, And to put him to death lift not up thy soul.
Châtie ton fils, car il y a encore de l’espérance; Mais ne désire point le faire mourir.
19 A man of great wrath is bearing punishment, For, if thou dost deliver, yet again thou dost add.
Celui que la colère emporte doit en subir la peine; Car si tu le libères, tu devras y revenir.
20 Hear counsel and receive instruction, So that thou art wise in thy latter end.
Écoute les conseils, et reçois l’instruction, Afin que tu sois sage dans la suite de ta vie.
21 Many [are] the purposes in a man's heart, And the counsel of Jehovah it standeth.
Il y a dans le cœur de l’homme beaucoup de projets, Mais c’est le dessein de l’Éternel qui s’accomplit.
22 The desirableness of a man [is] his kindness, And better [is] the poor than a liar.
Ce qui fait le charme d’un homme, c’est sa bonté; Et mieux vaut un pauvre qu’un menteur.
23 The fear of Jehovah [is] to life, And satisfied he remaineth — he is not charged with evil.
La crainte de l’Éternel mène à la vie, Et l’on passe la nuit rassasié, sans être visité par le malheur.
24 The slothful hath hidden his hand in a dish, Even unto his mouth he bringeth it not back.
Le paresseux plonge sa main dans le plat, Et il ne la ramène pas à sa bouche.
25 A scorner smite, and the simple acts prudently, And give reproof to the intelligent, He understandeth knowledge.
Frappe le moqueur, et le sot deviendra sage; Reprends l’homme intelligent, et il comprendra la science.
26 Whoso is spoiling a father causeth a mother to flee, A son causing shame, and bringing confusion.
Celui qui ruine son père et qui met en fuite sa mère Est un fils qui fait honte et qui fait rougir.
27 Cease, my son, to hear instruction — To err from sayings of knowledge.
Cesse, mon fils, d’écouter l’instruction, Si c’est pour t’éloigner des paroles de la science.
28 A worthless witness scorneth judgment, And the mouth of the wicked swalloweth iniquity.
Un témoin pervers se moque de la justice, Et la bouche des méchants dévore l’iniquité.
29 Judgments have been prepared for scorners, And stripes for the back of fools!
Les châtiments sont prêts pour les moqueurs, Et les coups pour le dos des insensés.
