Numbers 21
1 And the Canaanite — king Arad — dwelling in the south, heareth that Israel hath come the way of the Atharim, and he fighteth against Israel, and taketh [some] of them captive.
Lorsque le roi d’Arad Chananéen, qui habitait vers le midi, eut appris cela, c’est-à-dire, qu’Israël était venu par le chemin des espions, il combattit contre lui, et étant vainqueur, il en emporta le butin.
2 And Israel voweth a vow to Jehovah, and saith, 'If Thou dost certainly give this people into my hand, then I have devoted their cities;'
Mais Israël se liant par un vœu au Seigneur, dit: Si vous livrez ce peuple à ma main, je détruirai toutes ses villes.
3 and Jehovah hearkeneth to the voice of Israel, and giveth up the Canaanite, and he devoteth them and their cities, and calleth the name of the place Hormah.
Et le Seigneur exauça les prières d’Israël, et il livra le Chananéen qu’Israël fit périr, ses villes ayant été renversées; et il appela ce lieu du nom de Horma, c’est-à-dire anathème.
4 And they journey from mount Hor, the way of the Red Sea, to compass the land of Edom, and the soul of the people is short in the way,
Or, ils partirent aussi du mont Hor par la voie qui conduit à la mer Rouge, pour aller autour de la terre d’Edom. Et le peuple commença à s’ennuyer du chemin et de la fatigue;
5 and the people speak against God, and against Moses, 'Why hast thou brought us up out of Egypt to die in a wilderness? for there is no bread, and there is no water, and our soul hath been weary of this light bread.'
Et il parla contre Dieu et contre Moïse, et dit: Pourquoi nous as-tu retirés de l’Egypte, pour que nous mourions dans le désert? Le pain nous manque, il n’y a pas d’eau; notre âme a déjà des nausées à cause de cette nourriture très légère.
6 And Jehovah sendeth among the people the burning serpents, and they bite the people, and much people of Israel die;
C’est pourquoi le Seigneur envoya contre le peuple des serpents brûlants: à cause des blessures et de la mort d’un grand nombre.
7 and the people come in unto Moses and say, 'We have sinned, for we have spoken against Jehovah, and against thee; pray unto Jehovah, and He doth turn aside from us the serpent;' and Moses prayeth in behalf of the people.
On vint à Moïse et on dit: avons péché, parce que Nous nous avons parlé contre le Seigneur et contre toi: prie pour qu’il éloigne de nous les serpents. Et Moïse pria pour le peuple,
8 And Jehovah saith unto Moses, 'Make for thee a burning [serpent], and set it on an ensign; and it hath been, every one who is bitten and hath seen it — he hath lived.
Et le Seigneur lui dit: Fais un serpent d’airain, et expose-le comme un signe: celui qui ayant été blessé, le regardera, vivra.
9 And Moses maketh a serpent of brass, and setteth it on the ensign, and it hath been, if the serpent hath bitten any man, and he hath looked expectingly unto the serpent of brass — he hath lived.
Moïse fit donc un serpent d’airain et l’exposa comme un signe: lorsque les blessés le regardaient, ils étaient guéris.
10 And the sons of Israel journey, and encamp in Oboth.
Or les enfants d’Israël étant partis, campèrent à Oboth.
11 And they journey from Oboth, and encamp in Ije-Abarim, in the wilderness that [is] on the front of Moab, at the rising of the sun.
D’où étant sortis, ils plantèrent leurs tentes à Jéabarim, dans le désert qui regarde Moab, contre le côté oriental.
12 From thence they have journeyed, and encamp in the valley of Zared.
Et partant de là, ils vinrent au torrent de Zared;
13 From thence they have journeyed, and encamp beyond Arnon, which [is] in the wilderness which is coming out of the border of the Amorite, for Arnon [is] the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorite;
Le laissant, ils campèrent contre Arnon, qui est dans le désert, et s’avance sur les confins de l’Amorrhéen; puisqu’Arnon est la frontière de Moab, divisant les Moabites et les Amorrhéens.
14 therefore it is said in a book, 'The wars of Jehovah,' — 'Waheb in Suphah, And the brooks of Arnon;
D’où il est dit dans le livre des guerres du Seigneur: Comme il a fait en la mer Rouge, ainsi il fera dans les torrents d’Arnon.
15 And the spring of the brooks, Which turned aside to the dwelling of Ar, And hath leaned to the border of Moab.'
Les rochers des torrents se sont inclinés, pour se reposer en Ar, et pour retomber dans les confins des Moabites.
16 And from thence [they journeyed] to Beer; it [is] the well [concerning] which Jehovah said to Moses, 'Gather the people, and I give to them — water.'
Au sortir de ce lieu parut un puits, au sujet duquel le Seigneur dit à Moïse: Assemble le peuple, et je lui donnerai de l’eau.
17 Then singeth Israel this song, concerning the well — they have answered to it:
Alors Israël chanta ce cantique: Que le puits monte. Ils chantaient tous ensemble:
18 'A well — digged it have princes, Prepared it have nobles of the people, With the lawgiver, with their staves.' And from the wilderness [they journeyed] to Mattanah,
Le puits qu’ont creusé des princes, et qu’ont préparé les chefs de la multitude avec celui qui a donné la loi, et avec leurs bâtons. Du désert, ils vinrent à Matthana,
19 and from Mattanah to Nahaliel, and from Nahaliel to Bamoth,
De Matthana à Nahaliel, de Nahaliel à Bamoth;
20 and from Bamoth in the valley which [is] in the field of Moab [to] the top of Pisgah, which hath looked on the front of the wilderness.
Après Bamoth est une vallée dans la contrée de Moab, près du sommet de Phasga, qui regarde contre le désert.
21 And Israel sendeth messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorite, saying,
Or Israël envoya des messagers à Séhon, roi des Amorréhens, disant:
22 'Let me pass through thy land, we do not turn aside into a field, or into a vineyard, we do not drink waters of a well; in the king's way we go, till that we pass over thy border.'
Je demande instamment qu’il me soit permis de passer par ta terre: nous ne nous détournerons point dans les champs et les vignes, nous ne boirons point l’eau des puits; c’est par la voie publique que nous marcherons, jusqu’à ce que nous soyons passés hors de tes frontières.
23 And Sihon hath not suffered Israel to pass through his border, and Sihon gathereth all his people, and cometh out to meet Israel into the wilderness, and cometh in to Jahaz, and fighteth against Israel.
Séhon ne voulut pas accorder qu’Israël passât par ses confins; bien plus, son armée assemblée, il sortit au devant dans le désert et vint à Jasa, et combattit contre lui.
24 And Israel smiteth him by the mouth of the sword, and possesseth his land from Arnon unto Jabbok — unto the sons of Ammon; for the border of the sons of Ammon [is] strong.
Israël le frappa du tranchant du glaive et posséda sa terre depuis Arnon jusqu’à Jeboc et aux enfants d’Ammon, parce que les frontières des Ammonites étaient gardées par une forte garnison.
25 And Israel taketh all these cities, and Israel dwelleth in all the cities of the Amorite, in Heshbon, and in all its villages;
Israël prit donc toutes ses cités et il habita dans les villes de l’Amorrhéen, c’est-à-dire, dans Hésébon et ses bourgades.
26 for Heshbon is a city of Sihon king of the Amorite, and he hath fought against the former king of Moab, and taketh all his land out of his hand, unto Arnon;
La ville d’Hésébon était à Séhon, roi des Amorréhens qui combattit contre le roi de Moab et prit toute la terre qui avait été de sa domination jusqu’à Arnon.
27 therefore those using similes say — 'Enter ye Heshbon, Let the city of Sihon be built and ready,
C’est pourquoi on dit dans le proverbe: Venez à Hésébon; que la ville de Séhon soit bâtie et construite.
28 For fire hath gone out from Heshbon, A flame from the city of Sihon, It hath consumed Ar of Moab, Owners of the high places of Arnon.
Un feu est sorti d’Hésébon, une flamme, de la ville de Séhon, et elle a dévoré Ar des Moabites et les habitants des hauteurs d’Arnon.
29 Woe to thee, O Moab, Thou hast perished, O people of Chemosh, He hath given his sons who escape — Also his daughters — Into captivity, to a king of the Amorite — Sihon!
Malheur à toi, Moab! Tu as péri, peuple de Chamos. Il a mis ses fils en fuite et livré ses filles captives au roi des Amorrhéens, à Séhon.
30 And we shoot them, Perished hath Heshbon unto Dibon, And we make desolate unto Nophah, Which [is] unto Medeba.'
Leur joug a été entièrement détruit, depuis Hésébon jusqu’à Dibon; dans leur lassitude ils sont parvenus à Nophé et jusqu’à Médaba.
31 And Israel dwelleth in the land of the Amorite,
Israël habita donc dans la terre de l’Amorrhéen.
32 and Moses sendeth to spy out Jaazer, and they capture its villages, and dispossess the Amorite who [is] there,
Or, Moïse envoya des gens pour explorer Jazer; ils en prirent les bourgades et s’emparèrent des habitants.
33 and turn and go up the way of Bashan, and Og king of Bashan cometh out to meet them, he and all his people, to battle, [at] Edrei.
Ensuite, ils se détournèrent, et montèrent par le chemin de Basan; mais Og, roi de Basan, vint à leur rencontre pour les combattre à Edraï.
34 And Jehovah saith unto Moses, 'Fear him not, for into thy hand I have given him, and all his people, and his land, and thou hast done to him as thou hast done to Sihon king of the Amorite, who is dwelling in Heshbon.'
Alors le Seigneur dit à Moïse: Ne le crains point, je l’ai livré à ta main, lui, tout son peuple et sa terre; et tu lui feras comme tu as fait à Séhon, roi des Amorrhéens, qui habitait Hésébon.
35 And they smite him, and his sons, and all his people, until he hath not left to him a remnant, and they possess his land.
Ils le frappèrent donc, et lui avec ses enfants, et tout son peuple, jusqu’à une entière extermination, et ils possédèrent sa terre.
