Nehemiah 9
1 And in the twenty and fourth day of this month have the sons of Israel been gathered, with fasting, and with sackcloth, and earth upon them;
Or, au vingt-quatrième jour de ce mois, les enfants d’Israël s’assemblèrent dans le jeûne, dans des sacs, et ayant de la terre sur eux.
2 and the seed of Israel are separated from all sons of a stranger, and stand and confess concerning their sins, and the iniquities of their fathers,
Et la race des enfants d’Israël fut séparée de tout fils étranger; et ils se tinrent debout, et ils confessaient leurs péchés et les iniquités de leurs pères.
3 and rise up on their station, and read in the book of the law of Jehovah their God a fourth of the day, and a fourth they are confessing and bowing themselves to Jehovah their God.
Ainsi ils se levèrent pour se tenir debout, ils lurent dans le volume de la loi du Seigneur leur Dieu quatre fois dans le jour, et quatre fois ils confessaient leurs péchés et adoraient le Seigneur leur Dieu.
4 And there stand up on the ascent, of the Levites, Jeshua, and Bani, Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani, Chenani, and they cry with a loud voice unto Jehovah their God.
Or sur l’estrade des Lévites se levèrent Josué, Bani, Cedmihel, Sabania, Bonni, Sarébias, Bani et Chanani, et ils crièrent avec une voix forte vers le Seigneur leur Dieu.
5 And the Levites say, [even] Jeshua, and Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabniah, Sherebiah, Hodijah, Shebaniah, Pethahiah, 'Rise, bless Jehovah your God, from the age unto the age, and they bless the name of Thine honour that [is] exalted above all blessing and praise.
Et les Lévites Josué, Cedmihel, Bonni, Hasebnia, Sérébia, Odaïa, Sebnia, Phathahia, dirent: Levez-vous; bénissez le Seigneur votre Dieu depuis l’éternité jusqu’à l’éternité; qu’ils bénissent donc le nom sublime de votre gloire en toute bénédiction et louange.
6 Thou [art] He, O Jehovah, Thyself — Thou hast made the heavens, the heavens of the heavens, and all their host, the earth and all that [are] on it, the seas and all that [are] in them, and Thou art keeping all of them alive, and the host of the heavens to Thee are bowing themselves.
C’est vous-même, Seigneur, vous seul qui avez fait le ciel, et le ciel des cieux, et toute leur milice; la terre, et tout ce qui est en elle; les mers, et tout ce qui est en elles; et c’est vous qui vivifiez toutes choses, et l’armée du ciel vous adore.
7 'Thou [art] He, O Jehovah God, who didst fix on Abraham, and didst bring him out from Ur of the Chaldeans, and didst make his name Abraham,
C’est vous-même, Seigneur Dieu, qui avez choisi Abram, qui l’avez retiré du feu des Chaldéens, et qui lui avez donné le nom d’Abraham.
8 and didst find his heart stedfast before Thee, so as to make with him the covenant, to give the land of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, and the Perizzite, and the Jebusite, and the Girgashite, to give [it] to his seed. 'And Thou dost establish Thy words, for Thou [art] righteous,
Et vous avez trouvé son cœur fidèle devant vous, et vous avez fait avec lui alliance pour lui donner la terre du Chananéen, de l’Héthéen, de l’Amorrhéen, du Phérézéen, du Jébuséen et du Gergéséen, pour la donner à sa postérité; et vous avez accompli vos paroles, parce que vous êtes juste.
9 and dost see the affliction of our fathers in Egypt, and their cry hast heard by the sea of Suph,
Et vous avez vu l’affliction de nos pères en Égypte, et vous avez entendu leur cri sur la mer Rouge.
10 and dost give signs and wonders on Pharaoh, and on all his servants, and on all the people of his land, for Thou hast known that they have acted proudly against them, and Thou makest to Thee a name as [at] this day.
Et vous avez fait éclater des signes et des merveilles sur Pharaon, et sur tous ses serviteurs, et sur tout le peuple de ce pays; car vous avez connu qu’ils avaient agi insolemment contre eux, et vous vous êtes fait un nom comme il est encore en ce jour.
11 And the sea Thou hast cleaved before them, and they pass over into the midst of the sea on the dry land, and their pursuers Thou hast cast into the depths, as a stone, into the strong waters.
Et vous avez divisé la mer devant eux, et ils ont passé au milieu de la mer à sec; et ceux qui les poursuivaient, vous les avez jetés au fond, comme une pierre dans de grandes eaux.
12 And by a pillar of cloud Thou hast led them by day, and by a pillar of fire by night, to lighten to them the way in which they go.
Et dans une colonne de nuée, vous avez été leur guide pendant le jour, et dans une colonne de feu pendant la nuit, afin que leur apparût la voie dans laquelle ils entraient.
13 'And on mount Sinai Thou hast come down, even to speak with them from the heavens, and Thou dost give to them right judgments, and true laws, good statutes and commands.
Vous êtes descendu aussi sur la montagne de Sinaï, et vous avez parlé avec eux du haut du ciel; et vous leur avez donné des ordonnances justes et une loi de vérité, des cérémonies et des bons préceptes.
14 And Thy holy sabbath Thou hast made known to them, and commands, and statutes, and law, Thou hast commanded for them, by the hand of Moses Thy servant;
Et vous leur avez montré votre sabbat sanctifié, et vous leur avez prescrit et des commandements et des cérémonies, et une loi, par l’entremise de Moïse, votre serviteur.
15 and bread from the heavens Thou hast given to them for their hunger, and water from a rock hast brought out to them for their thirst, and dost say to them to go in to possess the land that Thou hast lifted up Thy hand to give to them.
Vous leur avez donné aussi un pain du ciel dans leur faim, et vous avez fait jaillir de l’eau d’une pierre pour eux, lorsqu’ils avaient soif; et vous leur avez dit qu’ils entreraient, pour la posséder, dans la terre sur laquelle vous avez levé la main, jurant que vous la leur donneriez.
16 'And they and our fathers have acted proudly, and harden their neck, and have not hearkened unto Thy commands,
Mais eux et nos pères ont agi insolemment; ils ont rendu leur cou inflexible, et ils n’ont pas écouté vos commandements.
17 yea, they refuse to hearken, and have not remembered Thy wonders that Thou hast done with them, and harden their neck and appoint a head, to turn back to their service, in their rebellion; and Thou [art] a God of pardons, gracious, and merciful, long-suffering, and abundant in kindness, and hast not forsaken them.
Et ils n’ont pas voulu entendre, et ils ne se sont pas souvenus de vos merveilles que vous aviez faites pour eux; ils ont même rendu leur cou inflexible; et ils ont établi un chef, pour retourner à leur servitude comme par rébellion. Mais vous, Dieu propice, clément et miséricordieux, ayant de la longanimité et une abondante miséricorde, vous ne les avez point abandonnés,
18 'Also, when they have made to themselves a molten calf, and say, this [is] thy god that brought thee up out of Egypt, and do great despisings,
Lors même qu’ils se firent un veau jeté en fonte, et qu’ils dirent: C’est là votre Dieu qui vous a tirés de l’Egypte, et qu’ils firent de grands blasphèmes.
19 and Thou, in Thine abundant mercies, hast not forsaken them in the wilderness — the pillar of the cloud hath not turned aside from off them by day, to lead them in the way, and the pillar of the fire by night, to give light to them and the way in which they go.
Mais vous, dans vos miséricordes sans nombre, vous ne les avez point abandonnés dans le désert; la colonne de nuée ne se retira point d’eux pendant le jour pour les conduire dans leur voie, ni la colonne de feu pendant la nuit pour leur montrer le chemin par lequel ils devaient marcher.
20 'And Thy good Spirit Thou hast given, to cause them to act wisely; and Thy manna Thou hast not withheld from their mouth, and water Thou hast given to them for their thirst,
Et vous leur avez donné votre bon esprit pour les enseigner, vous n’avez pas retiré votre manne de leur bouche, et vous leur avez donné de l’eau dans leur soif.
21 and forty years Thou hast nourished them in a wilderness; they have not lacked; their garments have not worn out, and their feet have not swelled.
Pendant quarante ans vous les avez nourris dans le désert, et rien ne leur a manqué: leurs vêtements ne vieillirent pas, et leurs pieds ne furent pas déchirés.
22 'And Thou givest to them kingdoms, and peoples, and dost apportion them to the corner, and they possess the land of Sihon, and the land of the king of Heshbon, and the land of Og king of Bashan.
Et vous leur avez donné des royaumes et des peuples, et vous leur avez distribué des lots, et ils possédèrent la terre de Séhon, et la terre du roi d’Hésébon, et la terre d’Og, roi de Basan.
23 And their sons Thou hast multiplied as the stars of the heavens, and bringest them in unto the land that Thou hast said to their fathers to go in to possess.
Et vous avez multiplié leurs fils comme les étoiles du ciel, et vous les avez conduits dans la terre dont vous aviez dit à leurs pères qu’ils y entreraient et la posséderaient.
24 'And the sons come in, and possess the land, and Thou humblest before them the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, and givest them into their hand, and their kings, and the peoples of the land, to do with them according to their pleasure.
Et les fils sont venus, et ils ont possédé la terre; et vous avez humilié devant eux les habitants de cette terre, les Chananéens, et vous les avez livrés en leur main, eux et leurs rois, et les peuples de cette terre, pour qu’ils leur fissent comme il leur plairait.
25 And they capture fenced cities, and fat ground, and possess houses full of all good, digged-wells, vineyards, and olive-yards, and fruit-trees in abundance, and they eat, and are satisfied, and become fat, and delight themselves in Thy great goodness.
C’est pourquoi ils prirent des villes fortifiées et une terre fertile, et ils possédèrent des maisons pleines de toute sorte de biens, des citernes faites par d’autres, des vignes, des plants d’oliviers, et beaucoup d’arbres portant des fruits; et ils ont mangé et ils ont été rassasiés, et ils se sont engraissés, et ils ont abondé en délices par votre grande bonté.
26 'And they are disobedient, and rebel against Thee, and cast Thy law behind their back, and Thy prophets they have slain, who testified against them, to bring them back unto Thee, and they do great despisings,
Mais ils vous ont provoqué au courroux; ils se sont retirés de vous; ils ont rejeté votre loi derrière eux, tué vos prophètes qui les conjuraient de revenir à vous, et ils ont fait de grands blasphèmes.
27 and Thou givest them into the hand of their adversaries, and they distress them, and in the time of their distress they cry unto Thee, and Thou, from the heavens, dost hear, and, according to Thine abundant mercies, dost give to them saviours, and they save them out of the hand of their adversaries.
Et vous les avez livrés à la main de leurs ennemis, qui les ont opprimés. Et dans le temps de leur tribulation, ils ont crié vers vous, et vous les avez entendus du ciel; et, selon vos miséricordes sans nombre, vous leur avez donné des sauveurs pour les sauver de la main de leurs ennemis.
28 'And when they have rest, they turn back to do evil before Thee, and Thou dost leave them in the hand of their enemies, and they rule over them; and they turn back, and call Thee, and Thou from the heavens dost hear, and dost deliver them, according to Thy mercies, many times,
Et, lorsqu’ils ont été en repos, ils ont de nouveau fait le mal en votre présence; et vous les avez délaissés dans la main de leurs ennemis, qui s’en sont rendus maîtres; ils se sont ensuite tournés vers vous et ont crié vers vous, et vous les avez exaucés du ciel, et vous les avez délivrés dans vos miséricordes, en bien des temps divers.
29 and dost testify against them, to bring them back unto Thy law; and they — they have acted proudly, and have not hearkened to Thy commands, and against Thy judgments have sinned, — which man doth and hath lived in them — and they give a refractory shoulder, and their neck have hardened, and have not hearkened.
De plus, vous les avez pressés de venir à votre loi; mais ils ont agi insolemment; ils n’ont pas écouté vos commandements, et ils ont péché contre vos ordonnances dans lesquelles l’homme qui les pratiquera, trouvera la vie; mais ils ont tourné l’épaule en arrière; ils ont rendu leur cou inflexible, et n’ont pas écouté.
30 'And Thou drawest over them many years, and testifiest against them by Thy Spirit, by the hand of Thy prophets, and they have not given ear, and Thou dost give them into the hand of peoples of the lands,
Vous les avez attendus pendant bien des années, et vous les avez pressés par votre esprit, par l’entremise de vos prophètes; mais ils n’ont pas écouté, et vous les avez livrés en la main des peuples de la terre.
31 and in Thine abundant mercies Thou hast not made them a consumption, nor hast forsaken them; for a God, gracious and merciful, [art] Thou.
Mais, dans vos miséricordes innombrables, vous ne les avez point exterminés ni abandonnés, parce que vous êtes un Dieu de miséricorde et de clémence.
32 'And now, O our God — God, the great, the mighty, and the fearful, keeping the covenant and the kindness — let not all the travail that hath found us be little before Thee, for our kings, for our heads, and for our priests, and for our prophets, and for our fathers, and for all Thy people, from the days of the kings of Asshur unto this day;
Maintenant donc, notre Dieu, le grand, le fort, le terrible, qui gardez l’alliance et la miséricorde, ne détournez point de votre face tout le mal qui nous a accablés, nous, nos rois, nos princes, nos prêtres, nos prophètes, nos pères, et tout votre peuple, depuis les jours du roi d’Assur jusqu’à ce jour.
33 and Thou [art] righteous concerning all that hath come upon us, for truth Thou hast done, and we have done wickedly;
Pour vous, vous êtes juste dans tout ce qui vous est venu sur nous; car vous avez accompli la vérité, mais nous, nous avons agi avec impiété.
34 and our kings, our heads, our priests, and our fathers, have not done Thy law, nor attended unto Thy commands, and to Thy testimonies, that Thou hast testified against them;
Nos rois, nos princes, nos prêtres et nos pères n’ont pas pratiqué votre loi, et n’ont pas écouté vos commandements et vos décrets que vous leur avez intimés.
35 and they, in their kingdom, and in Thine abundant goodness, that Thou hast given to them, and in the land, the large and the fat, that Thou hast set before them, have not served Thee, nor turned back from their evil doings.
Et même au milieu de leurs royaumes, et malgré la grande bonté que vous leur avez témoignée, et dans la terre très étendue et fertile que vous leur avez livrée, ils ne vous ont pas servi, et ils ne sont pas revenus de leurs inclinations très mauvaises.
36 'Lo, we — to-day — [are] servants, and the land that Thou hast given to our fathers, to eat its fruit and its good — lo, we [are] servants on it,
Voilà que nous-mêmes aujourd’hui nous sommes esclaves, ainsi que la terre que vous aviez donnée à vos pères, afin qu’ils en mangeassent le pain et qu’ils jouissent des biens qui sont en elles, et nous-mêmes, nous sommes esclaves dans cette terre.
37 and its increase it is multiplying to the kings whom Thou hast set over us in our sins; and over our bodies they are ruling, and over our cattle, according to their pleasure, and we [are] in great distress.
Et ses fruits se multiplient pour les rois que vous avez placés sur nous à cause de nos péchés, et ils dominent sur nos corps et sur nos bêtes, selon leur volonté, et nous sommes dans une grande tribulation.
38 And for all this we are making a stedfast covenant, and are writing, and over him who is sealed [are] our heads, our Levites, our priests.'
À cause donc de toutes ces choses, nous-mêmes nous faisons une alliance, nous l’écrivons, et nos princes, nos Lévites et nos prêtres la signent.
