Luke 20
1 And it came to pass, on one of those days, as he is teaching the people in the temple, and proclaiming good news, the chief priests and the scribes, with the elders, came upon [him],
Un de ces jours-là, comme il instruisait le peuple dans le Temple et lui annonçait l'Évangile, survinrent les chefs des prêtres et les Scribes, réunis aux Anciens,
2 and spake unto him, saying, 'Tell us by what authority thou dost these things? or who is he that gave to thee this authority?'
qui lui tinrent ce langage: «Dis-nous en vertu de quelle autorité tu fais ces choses, ou qui est celui qui t'a donné cette autorité?»
3 And he answering said unto them, 'I will question you — I also — one thing, and tell me:
Il leur fit cette réponse: «Je vous poserai, moi aussi, une question: répondez-moi;
4 the baptism of John, from heaven was it, or from men?'
le baptême de Jean venait-il du ciel ou des hommes?»
5 And they reasoned with themselves, saying — 'If we may say, From heaven, he will say, Wherefore, then, did ye not believe him?
Or ils faisaient, à part eux, ce raisonnement: «Si nous disons: du ciel, il répliquera: «Pourquoi alors ne l'avez-vous pas cru?»
6 and if we may say, From men, all the people will stone us, for they are having been persuaded John to be a prophet.'
Si nous disons: des hommes, tout le peuple nous lapidera; car il est convaincu que Jean était un prophète.»
7 And they answered, that they knew not whence [it was],
Ils répondirent donc qu'ils ne savaient d'où venait ce baptême.
8 and Jesus said to them, 'Neither do I say to you by what authority I do these things.'
Et Jésus leur répondit à son tour: «Je ne vous dis pas, moi non plus, en vertu de quelle autorité je fais ces choses.»
9 And he began to speak unto the people this simile: 'A certain man planted a vineyard, and gave it out to husbandmen, and went abroad for a long time,
Puis il se mit à raconter au peuple cette parabole: «Un homme planta une vigne, la loua à des vignerons et fit une longue absence.
10 and at the season he sent unto the husbandmen a servant, that from the fruit of the vineyard they may give to him, but the husbandmen having beat him, did send [him] away empty.
La saison venue, il envoya un serviteur aux vignerons, chargé de recevoir le produit de la vigne. Les vignerons, après l'avoir battu, le renvoyèrent les mains vides.
11 'And he added to send another servant, and they that one also having beaten and dishonoured, did send away empty;
Le maître alors leur envoya un autre serviteur. Celui-là, ils le battirent aussi, le traitèrent avec mépris et le renvoyèrent les mains vides.
12 and he added to send a third, and this one also, having wounded, they did cast out.
Il leur en envoya un troisième. Celui-là ils le couvrirent de blessures et le jetèrent dehors.
13 'And the owner of the vineyard said, What shall I do? I will send my son — the beloved, perhaps having seen this one, they will do reverence;
— «Que dois-je faire?» dit alors le maître de la vigne. «Je leur enverrai mon fils, mon bien-aimé; sans doute, ils le respecteront.»
14 and having seen him, the husbandmen reasoned among themselves, saying, This is the heir; come, we may kill him, that the inheritance may become ours;
Mais quand les vignerons le virent, ils firent entre eux ce raisonnement: Celui-là c'est l'héritier; tuons-le pour que l'héritage soit à nous.»
15 and having cast him outside of the vineyard, they killed [him]; what, then, shall the owner of the vineyard do to them?
Alors ils le jetèrent hors de la vigne et le tuèrent. Que leur fera donc le maître de la vigne?
16 He will come, and destroy these husbandmen, and will give the vineyard to others.' And having heard, they said, 'Let it not be!'
Il viendra, il fera périr ces vignerons et donnera la vigne, à d'autres.» — «Que cela n'arrive pas!» dirent-ils à ces paroles.
17 and he, having looked upon them, said, 'What, then, is this that hath been written: A stone that the builders rejected — this became head of a corner?
Mais lui, les regardant en face, ajouta: «Qu'est-ce donc que ce passage de l'Écriture: «La pierre qu'ont rejetée ceux qui bâtissaient; Celle-là même est devenue la tête de l'angle.»
18 every one who hath fallen on that stone shall be broken, and on whom it may fall, it will crush him to pieces.'
«Quiconque tombera sur cette pierre s'y brisera; et celui sur qui elle tombera, elle le mettra en poussière.»
19 And the chief priests and the scribes sought to lay hands on him in that hour, and they feared the people, for they knew that against them he spake this simile.
Les Scribes et les chefs des prêtres cherchèrent à mettre immédiatement la main sur lui; car ils comprenaient bien que c'était eux qu'il avait en vue dans cette parabole; mais ils redoutaient le peuple.
20 And, having watched [him], they sent forth liers in wait, feigning themselves to be righteous, that they might take hold of his word, to deliver him up to the rule and to the authority of the governor,
Ils le surveillèrent et lui envoyèrent d'habiles espions qui faisaient semblant d'être de bonne foi; leur but était de surprendre une parole de lui qui leur permît de le livrer aux autorités et au pouvoir du procurateur.
21 and they questioned him, saying, 'Teacher, we have known that thou dost say and teach rightly, and dost not accept a person, but in truth the way of God dost teach;
Ils lui posèrent une question: «Maître, nous savons que tu es droit dans ta parole et dans ton enseignement, que tu ne fais acception de personne, que, tout au contraire, tu enseignes en toute vérité la voie de Dieu.
22 Is it lawful to us to give tribute to Caesar or not?'
Nous est-il permis, oui ou non, de payer un tribut à César?»
23 And he, having perceived their craftiness, said unto them, 'Why me do ye tempt?
Devinant leur ruse, Jésus leur dit:
24 shew me a denary; of whom hath it an image and superscription?' and they answering said, 'Of Caesar:'
«Montrez-moi un denier... De qui porte-t-il l'image et l'inscription?» — «De César», répondirent-ils. —
25 and he said to them, 'Give back, therefore, the things of Caesar to Caesar, and the things of God to God;'
«Eh bien, leur dit-il alors, rendez à César ce qui est à César et à Dieu ce qui est à Dieu.»
26 and they were not able to take hold on his saying before the people, and having wondered at his answer, they were silent.
Il leur fut ainsi impossible de surprendre une parole de lui en présence du peuple, et tout étonnés de cette réponse, ils gardèrent le silence.
27 And certain of the Sadducees, who are denying that there is a rising again, having come near, questioned him,
Survinrent ensuite quelques Saducéens (ceux qui affirment qu’il n’y a point de résurrection); ils lui posèrent aussi une question:
28 saying, 'Teacher, Moses wrote to us, If any one's brother may die, having a wife, and he may die childless — that his brother may take the wife, and may raise up seed to his brother.
«Maître, dirent-ils, voici ce que Moïse nous a prescrit: «Si le frère de quelqu'un meurt laissant une femme sans enfants, celui-ci devra épouser la veuve, pour susciter à son frère une postérité.»
29 'There were, then, seven brothers, and the first having taken a wife, died childless,
Or, il y a eu sept frères. Le premier a pris femme et est mort sans enfants.
30 and the second took the wife, and he died childless,
Le second a épousé la veuve;
31 and the third took her, and in like manner also the seven — they left not children, and they died;
puis le troisième; tous les sept; aucun n'a laissé d'enfants; et tous sont morts.
32 and last of all died also the woman:
Enfin, la femme aussi est morte.
33 in the rising again, then, of which of them doth she become wife? — for the seven had her as wife.'
Eh bien, à la résurrection, duquel d'entre eux cette femme sera-t-elle l'épouse? Les sept, en effet, l'ont eue pour femme.»
34 And Jesus answering said to them, 'The sons of this age do marry and are given in marriage, (aiōn g165)
Jésus leur répondit: «Les enfants de ce monde se marient et donnent en mariage; (aiōn g165)
35 but those accounted worthy to obtain that age, and the rising again that is out of the dead, neither marry, nor are they given in marriage; (aiōn g165)
mais ceux qui ont été jugés dignes de participer au monde à venir et à la résurrection d'entre les morts, ne se marient, ni ne sont donnés en mariage; (aiōn g165)
36 for neither are they able to die any more — for they are like messengers — and they are sons of God, being sons of the rising again.
car ils ne peuvent plus mourir: ils sont semblables aux anges, et ils sont fils de Dieu étant fils de la résurrection.
37 'And that the dead are raised, even Moses shewed at the Bush, since he doth call the Lord, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob;
Or que les morts ressuscitent, Moïse l'a montré au passage du buisson, quand il appelle le Seigneur, le Dieu d'Abraham, le Dieu d'Isaac, le Dieu de Jacob.
38 and He is not a God of dead men, but of living, for all live to Him.'
Or ce n'est point de morts, c'est de vivants qu'il est Dieu. Pour lui ils vivent tous.»
39 And certain of the scribes answering said, 'Teacher, thou didst say well;'
Quelques Scribes intervinrent pour dire: «Maître, tu as parfaitement répondu.»
40 and no more durst they question him anything.
Personne n'osait plus lui poser une seule question.
41 And he said unto them, 'How do they say the Christ to be son of David,
Il leur demanda alors: «Comment dit-on que le Christ est Fils de David,
42 and David himself saith in the Book of Psalms, The Lord said to my lord, Sit thou on my right hand,
quand David dit lui-même au livre des Psaumes: «Le Seigneur a dit à mon Seigneur: Siège à ma droite;
43 till I shall make thine enemies thy footstool;
Jusqu'à ce que j'aie mis tes ennemis sous tes pieds.»
44 David, then, doth call him lord, and how is he his son?'
Ainsi David l'appelle Seigneur, comment donc est-il son fils?»
45 And, all the people hearing, he said to his disciples,
Devant tout le peuple qui entendait, il dit aux disciples:
46 'Take heed of the scribes, who are wishing to walk in long robes, and are loving salutations in the markets, and first seats in the synagogues, and first couches in the suppers,
«Soyez sur vos gardes avec les Scribes qui se complaisent à se promener en robes solennelles, qui aiment à recevoir des salutations sur les places publiques, à occuper les premiers sièges dans les synagogues, les premières places dans les festins,
47 who devour the houses of the widows, and for a pretence make long prayers, these shall receive more abundant judgment.'
qui dévorent, les ressources des veuves, et qui affectent de prier longuement. C'est pour ces hommes-là que le jugement aura le plus de rigueur.»
