Judges 21
1 And the men of Israel have sworn in Mizpeh, saying, 'None of us doth give his daughter to Benjamin for a wife.'
Après cela, les fils d'Israël en Masdepha prêtèrent ce serment: Nul de nous ne donnera sa fille en mariage à un homme de Benjamin.
2 And the people come in to Beth-El, and sit there till the evening before God, and lift up their voice, and weep — a great weeping,
Le peuple revint ensuite à Béthel; il y demeura jusqu'au soir devant Dieu, et ils élevèrent la voix, et ils pleurèrent amèrement.
3 and say, 'Why, O Jehovah, God of Israel, hath this been in Israel — to be lacking to-day, from Israel, one tribe?'
Et ils dirent: Seigneur, pourquoi faut-il que ce malheur soit arrivé, et que l'une des tribus ait été retranchée d'Israël?
4 And it cometh to pass on the morrow, that the people rise early, and build there an altar, and cause to ascend burnt-offerings and peace-offerings.
Le jour parut, et le peuple se leva de grand matin, et il bâtit en ce lieu un autel, et il offrit en holocauste des victimes sans tache.
5 And the sons of Israel say, 'Who [is] he that hath not come up in the assembly out of all the tribes of Israel unto Jehovah?' for the great oath hath been concerning him who hath not come up unto Jehovah to Mizpeh, saying, 'He is surely put to death.'
Et les fils d'Israël dirent: Qui donc de tout le peuple n'a point paru à l'assemblée devant le Seigneur? Car ils avaient prêté un serment solennel contre ceux qui n'étaient point montés à Massepha devant le Seigneur, disant: Qu'ils soient mis à mort.
6 And the sons of Israel repent concerning Benjamin their brother, and say, 'There hath been to-day cut off one tribe from Israel,
Et les fils d'Israël furent touchés de regret au sujet de Benjamin, leur frère, et ils dirent: L'une des tribus aujourd'hui a été retranchée d'Israël.
7 what do we do for them — for those who are left — for wives, and we — we have sworn by Jehovah not to give to them of our daughters for wives?'
Que ferons-nous pour les survivants qui n'ont point de femmes, nous qui avons juré devant le Seigneur de ne point leur donner nos filles en mariage?
8 And they say, 'Who is [that] one out of the tribes of Israel who hath not come up unto Jehovah to Mizpeh?' and lo, none hath come in unto the camp from Jabesh-Gilead — unto the assembly.
Puis, ils dirent: Est-il quelqu'un parmi les tribus d'Israël qui ne soit point venu devant le Seigneur à Massopha? Et on leur déclara qu'il n'était venu au camp personne de Jabes-Galaad.
9 And the people numbered themselves, and lo, there is not there a man of the inhabitants of Jabesh-Gilead.
En effet, le peuple fut recensé, et il n'y avait là aucun des habitants de Jabes-Galaad.
10 And the company send there twelve thousand men of the sons of valour, and command them, saying, 'Go — and ye have smitten the inhabitants of Jabesh-Gilead by the mouth of the sword, even the women and the infants.
Aussitôt, la synagogue fit marcher deux mille vaillants hommes contre cette ville, et elle leur donna ses ordres, disant: Allez et passez au fil de l'épée les habitants de Jabes-Galaad.
11 And this [is] the thing which ye do; every male, and every woman knowing the lying of a male, ye devote.'
Voici ce que vous ferez: Tout homme et toute femme ayant connu la couche d'un homme, vous les anathématiserez; quant aux vierges, vous les réserverez. Et ils firent ainsi.
12 And they find out of the inhabitants of Jabesh-Gilead four hundred young women, virgins, who have not known man by the lying of a male, and they bring them in unto the camp at Shiloh, which [is] in the land of Canaan.
Or, ils trouvèrent parmi les habitants de Jabes-Galaad quatre cents vierges qui ne connaissaient ni les hommes, ni la couche des hommes, et ils les amenèrent au camp de Silo, en la terre de Chanaan.
13 And all the company send, and speak, unto the sons of Benjamin who [are] in the rock Rimmon, and proclaim to them peace;
Alors, toute la synagogue dépêcha des envoyés qui parlèrent aux fils de Benjamin en la roche de Rhemmon, et ils les appelèrent à un entretien pacifique.
14 and Benjamin turneth back at that time, and they give to them the women whom they have kept alive of the women of Jabesh-Gilead, and they have not found for [all of] them so.
En ce temps-là, Benjamin revint aux fils d'Israël, et les fils d'Israël leur donnèrent en mariage les filles qu'ils avaient épargnées en Jabes-Galaad. Et ils l'eurent pour agréable.
15 And the people repented concerning Benjamin, for Jehovah had made a breach among the tribes of Israel.
Cependant le peuple fut encore touché de regrets au sujet de Benjamin, parce que le Seigneur avait retranché l'une des tribus d'Israël.
16 And the elders of the company say, 'What do we do to the remnant for wives — for the women have been destroyed out of Benjamin?'
Et les anciens de l'assemblée dirent: Que ferons-nous pour que les survivants aient des femmes? Toutes les femmes de Benjamin avaient péri.
17 And they say, 'A possession of an escaped party [is] to Benjamin, and a tribe is not blotted out from Israel;
Les anciens dirent encore: Que l'héritage reste à ceux de Benjamin qui survivent, et l'une des tribus d'Israël ne sera point effacée;
18 and we — we are not able to give to them wives out of our daughters, for the sons of Israel have sworn, saying, Cursed [is] he who is giving a wife to Benjamin.'
Mais, nous ne pouvons leur accorder en mariage nos filles, puis qu'entre nous nous avons juré, disant: Maudit celui qui mariera sa fille à Benjamin.
19 And they say, 'Lo, a festival of Jehovah [is] in Shiloh, from time to time, which [is] on the north of Beth-El, at the rising of the sun, by the highway which is going up from Beth-El to Shechem, and on the south of Lebonah.'
Ils ajoutèrent: C'est bientôt la fête du Seigneur que l'on a célébrée d'âge en âge à Silo (cette ville est au nord de Béthel, à l'orient du chemin qui monte de Béthel à Sichem et au midi de Lebona).
20 And they command the sons of Benjamin, saying, 'Go — and ye have laid wait in the vineyards,
Puis, ils donnèrent leurs instructions aux fils de Benjamin, disant: Allez et cachez-vous dans les vignes.
21 and have seen, and lo, if the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in dances — then ye have gone out from the vineyards, and caught for you each his wife out of the daughters of Shiloh, and gone to the land of Benjamin;
Vous observerez, et, quand vous verrez les filles des habitants de Silo sortir pour former des chœurs de danses, sortez aussi des vignes et enlevez chacun l'une des filles de Silo; emmenez-la en Benjamin.
22 and it hath been, when their fathers or their brethren come in to plead unto us, that we have said unto them, Favour us [by] them, for we have not taken [to] each his wife in battle, for ye — ye have not given to them at this time [that] ye are guilty.'
Et, lorsque leurs pères ou leurs frères viendront nous demander justice, nous leur dirons pour vous: Faites miséricorde; nul de nous n'a pu prendre femme dans le combat; vous-mêmes ne nous en avez point donné; c'est de votre part qu'est la faute.
23 And the sons of Benjamin do so, and take women according to their number, out of the dancers whom they have taken violently away; and they go, and turn back unto their inheritance, and build the cities, and dwell in them.
Les fils de Benjamin agirent ainsi; ils prirent autant de femmes qu'ils étaient d'hommes, parmi celles qui dansaient; après les avoir ravies, ils les emmenèrent, et ils retournèrent en leur héritage, ou ils rebâtirent leurs villes et ils demeurèrent.
24 And the sons of Israel go up and down thence at that time, each to his tribe, and to his family; and they go out thence each to his inheritance.
Les fils d'Israël en temps-là se dispersèrent, et chacun rentra dans sa tribu, dans sa famille, dans son héritage.
25 In those days there is no king in Israel; each doth that which is right in his own eyes.
Et, en ces jours-là, il n'y avait point de roi en Israël; chacun faisait ce que bon lui semblait.
