Judges 18
1 In those days there is no king in Israel, and in those days the tribe of the Danite is seeking for itself an inheritance to inhabit, for [that] hath not fallen to it unto that day in the midst of the tribes of Israel by inheritance.
En ce temps-là, il n'y avait point de roi en Israël, et la tribu de Dan cherchait un héritage ou elle pût demeurer, parce que, jusqu'à ces jours-là, il ne lui était point échu d'héritage au milieu des tribus d'Israël.
2 And the sons of Dan send, out of their family, five men of them, men, sons of valour, from Zorah, and from Eshtaol, to traverse the land, and to search it, and they say unto them, 'Go, search the land;' and they come into the hill-country of Ephraim, unto the house of Micah, and lodge there.
Les fils de Dan envoyèrent donc de Saraa et d'Esthaol cinq hommes vaillants de leurs familles, afin d'explorer la terre et de l'observer avec soin; et ils leur dirent: Allez, et observez avec soin la terre. Et les hommes allèrent dans les montagnes d'Ephraïm, jusqu'à la maison de Michas, et ils logèrent
3 They [are] with the household of Micah, and they have discerned the voice of the young man, the Levite, and turn aside there, and say to him, 'Who hath brought thee hither? and what art thou doing in this [place?] and what to thee here?'
En la maison de Michas; là, ayant entendu la voix du jeune lévite, ils allèrent à lui, et lui dirent: Qui t'a amené ici? Que fais-tu en ce lieu? Comment y es-tu traité?
4 And he saith unto them, 'Thus and thus hath Micah done to me; and he hireth me, and I am to him for a priest.'
Il leur répondit: Voici comment me traite Michas: il me salarie, et je suis chez lui le prêtre.
5 And they say to him, 'Ask, we pray thee, at God, and we know whether our way is prosperous on which we are going.'
Et ils lui dirent: Consulte donc Dieu, pour que nous sachions si le voyage que nous avons entrepris réussira.
6 And the priest saith to them, 'Go in peace; over-against Jehovah [is] your way in which ye go.'
Et le prêtre leur dit: Allez en paix, le voyage que vous faites est sous la protection du Seigneur.
7 And the five men go, and come in to Laish, and see the people which [is] in its midst, dwelling confidently, according to the custom of Zidonians, quiet and confident; and there is none putting to shame in the land in [any] thing, possessing restraint, and they [are] far off from the Zidonians, and have no word with [any] man.
Ensuite, les cinq hommes partirent; ils arrivèrent à Laïs, et ils virent un peuple qui y demeurait sans inquiétude, tranquille comme le pays des Sidoniens; il était en paix sans que personne vint l'effrayer ou le troubler en quoi que ce fût. Il n'y avait pas là de maître pour extorquer ses richesses; il était d'ailleurs éloigné des Sidoniens, et sans rapport avec les autres hommes.
8 And they come in unto their brethren, at Zorah and Eshtaol, and their brethren say to them, 'What — ye?'
Et les cinq hommes revinrent auprès de leurs frères en Saraa et en Esthaol, et ils dirent à leurs frères: Pourquoi restez-vous ici?
9 And they say, 'Rise, and we go up against them, for we have seen the land, and lo, very good; and ye are keeping silent! be not slothful to go — to enter to possess the land.
Ils ajoutèrent: Levez-vous, et marchons contre eux; lorsque nous sommes allés explorer le territoire jusqu'à Laisa, nous avons vu un peuple habitant en sécurité, à la façon des Sidoniens, paisible dans sa confiance, ne pouvant appeler personne car ils sont loin de Sidon, et sans relations avec la Syrie.
10 When ye go, ye come in unto a people confident, and the land [is] large on both hands, for God hath given it into your hand, a place where there is no lack of anything which [is] in the land.'
Aussitôt que vous serez arrivés, vous entrerez chez un peuple qui demeure sans inquiétude en une vaste terre que le Seigneur a livrée à nos mains, où rien ne manque de ce que produit la terre.
11 And there journey thence, of the family of the Danite, from Zorah, and from Eshtaol, six hundred men girded with weapons of war.
Alors, six cents hommes bien armés, tous des familles de Dan, partirent de Saraa et d'Esthaol.
12 And they go up and encamp in Kirjath-Jearim, in Judah, therefore they have called that place, 'Camp of Dan,' till this day; lo, behind Kirjath-Jearim.
Ils montèrent et ils campèrent sur le territoire de Gariathiarim en Juda. A cause de cela, ce lieu s'appelle encore de nos jours le camp de Dan; il est derrière Gariathiarim.
13 And they pass over thence [to] the hill-country of Ephraim, and come in unto the house of Micah.
Ils traversèrent ensuite les montagnes d'Ephraïm, et arrivèrent auprès de la maison de Michas.
14 And the five men, those going to traverse the land of Laish, answer and say unto their brethren, 'Have ye known that there is in these houses an ephod, and teraphim, and graven image, and molten image? and now, know what ye do.'
Et les cinq hommes qui avaient été envoyés à la découverte en Lais, s'expliquèrent; ils dirent à leurs frères: Sachez qu'il y a en cette maison un éphod, et des théraphim, et une sculpture et un ouvrage en fonte; voyez maintenant ce que vous ferez.
15 And they turn aside thither, and come in unto the house of the young man the Levite, the house of Micah, and ask of him of welfare, —
Les cinq hommes y allèrent, et entrèrent dans la maison où était le jeune lévite, chez Michas, et ils questionnèrent le lévite pacifiquement.
16 (and the six hundred men girded with their weapons of war, who [are] of the sons of Dan, are standing at the opening of the gate), —
Cependant, les six cents hommes en armes se tenaient près de la porte de la maison, ceux d'entre les fils de Dan
17 yea, the five men, those going to traverse the land, go up — they have come in thither — they have taken the graven image, and the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image — and the priest is standing at the opening of the gate, and the six hundred men who are girded with weapons of war —
Et les cinq hommes, qu'on avait envoyés d'abord à la découverte, étant entrés là se saisirent de l'éphod, des théraphim, et de la sculpture et l'ouvrage en fonte; et le prêtre se tenait devant la porte avec les six cents hommes en armes.
18 yea, these have entered the house of Micah, and take the graven image, the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image; and the priest saith unto them, 'What are ye doing?'
Et ceux-ci entrèrent dans la maison de Michas et prirent l'éphod, les théraphim, la sculpture et l'ouvrage en fonte, et le prêtre leur dit: Que faites-vous?
19 and they say to him, 'Keep silent, lay thy hand on thy mouth, and go with us, and be to us for a father and for a priest: is it better thy being a priest to the house of one man, or thy being priest to a tribe and to a family in Israel?'
Et ils lui dirent: Garde le silence, mets ta main sur ta bouche; viens avec nous, sois pour nous un père et un prêtre; ne vaut-il pas mieux pour toi être le prêtre d'une tribu et de la maison d'une famille d'Israël, que le prêtre de la maison d'un seul homme?
20 And the heart of the priest is glad, and he taketh the ephod, and the teraphim, and the graven image, and goeth into the midst of the people,
Le cœur du prêtre se réjouit; il prit l'éphod, et les théraphim, et la sculpture et l'ouvrage en fonte, et il se rendit au milieu de la troupe en armes.
21 and they turn and go, and put the infants, and the cattle, and the baggage, before them.
Tous ensemble se remirent en marche; ils s'éloignèrent ayant placé en avant les enfants, le bétail et les bagages.
22 They have been far off from the house of Micah — and the men who [are] in the houses which [are] near the house of Micah have been called together, and overtake the sons of Dan,
Ils étaient déjà a une certaine distance de la maison de Michas, quand Michas et les hommes des maisons voisines de la maison de Michas, jetant de grands cris, atteignirent les fils de Dan.
23 and call unto the sons of Dan, and they turn round their faces, and say to Micah, 'What — to thee that thou hast been called together?'
Les fils de Dan firent volte-face, et ils dirent à Michas: Qu'as-tu? Pourquoi jettes-tu ces cris?
24 And he saith, 'My gods which I made ye have taken, and the priest, and ye go; and what to me more? and what [is] this ye say unto me, What — to thee!'
Et Michas répondit: Vous avez pris la sculpture que j'avais faite; vous emmenez le prêtre, et que me reste-t-il? Comment pouvez-vous me dire: Pourquoi jettes-tu ces cris?
25 And the sons of Dan say unto him, 'Let not thy voice be heard with us, lest men bitter in soul fall upon you, and thou hast gathered thy life, and the life of thy household;'
Et les fils de Dan lui dirent: Que ta voix n'arrive plus jusqu'à nous, de peur que des hommes irrités, courant sur vous, ne prennent ta vie et la vie de toute ta famille.
26 and the sons of Dan go on their way, and Micah seeth that they are stronger than he, and turneth, and goeth back unto his house.
Puis, les fils de Dan se remirent en marche; Michas, voyant qu'ils étaient les plus forts, s'en retourna chez lui.
27 And they have taken that which Micah had made, and the priest whom he had, and come in against Laish, against a people quiet and confident, and smite them by the mouth of the sword, and the city have burnt with fire,
Et les fils de Dan emportèrent ce qu'avait fabriqué Michas; ils emmenèrent le prêtre qui demeurait avec lui, et ils arrivèrent à Laïs chez un peuple paisible, plein de sécurité; ils le passèrent au fil de l'épée, et ils livrèrent la ville aux flammes.
28 and there is no deliverer, for it [is] far off from Zidon, and they have no word with [any] man, and it [is] in the valley which [is] by Beth-Rehob; and they build the city, and dwell in it,
Il n'y avait là personne pour défendre ce peuple; car il était loin de Sidon, sans rapport avec les autres hommes, et il vivait dans la vallée de la maison de Rhaab; les fils de Dan rebâtirent la ville, où ils demeurèrent.
29 and call the name of the city Dan, by the name of Dan their father, who was born to Israel; and yet Laish [is] the name of the city at the first.
Et ils appelèrent la ville: Dan, du nom de leur père, fils d'Israël, car, auparavant, elle se nommait Ulamaïs.
30 And the sons of Dan raise up for themselves the graven image, and Jonathan son of Gershom, son of Manasseh, he and his sons have been priests to the tribe of the Danite, till the day of the removal of [the people] of the land.
Les fils de Dan y dressèrent la statue. Et Jonathan, fils de Gerson, fils de Manassé, lui et ses fils furent prêtres de la tribu de Dan, jusqu'au jour de sa captivité.
31 And they appoint for them the graven image of Micah, which he had made, all the days of the house of God being in Shiloh.
Et ils se servirent pour eux de la statue que Michas avait faite, tout le temps que la maison de Dieu fut à Silo. En ces jours-là, il n'y avait point de roi en Israël.
