Judges 12
1 And the men of Ephraim are called together, and pass over northward, and say to Jephthah, 'Wherefore has thou passed over to fight against the Bene-Ammon, and on us hast not called to go with thee? thy house we burn over thee with fire.'
Les gens d’Ephraïm s’assemblèrent, s’avancèrent vers le nord, et dirent à Jephté: "Pourquoi es-tu allé en guerre contre les Ammonites, et ne nous as-tu pas invités à marcher avec toi? Nous allons brûler ta maison avec toi-même."
2 And Jephthah saith unto them, 'A man of great strife I have been (I and my people) with the Bene-Ammon, and I call you, and ye have not saved me out of their hand,
Jephté leur répondit: "J’Avais de graves démêlés, moi et mon peuple, avec les Ammonites; j’ai invoqué votre assistance, vous ne m’avez pas secouru contre eux.
3 and I see that thou art not a saviour, and I put my life in my hand, and pass over unto the Bene-Ammon, and Jehovah giveth them into my hand — and why have ye come up unto me this day to fight against me?'
Voyant donc que vous ne m’aidiez pas, j’ai marché, au péril de ma vie, contre les fils d’Ammon, et l’Eternel les a livrés en mon pouvoir. Pourquoi donc venez-vous aujourd’hui me chercher querelle?"
4 And Jephthah gathered all the men of Gilead, and fighteth with Ephraim, and the men of Gilead smite Ephraim, because they said, 'Fugitives of Ephraim [are] ye Gileadites, in the midst of Ephraim — in the midst of Manasseh.'
Jephté rassembla tous les hommes de Galaad, et livra bataille à Ephraïm; et les hommes de Galaad défirent ceux d’Ephraïm, car ils disaient: "Vous êtes des fuyards ephraïmites", Galaad étant partagé entre Ephraïm et Manassé.
5 And Gilead captureth the passages of the Jordan to Ephraim, and it hath been, when [any of] the fugitives of Ephraim say, 'Let me pass over,' and the men of Gilead say to him, 'An Ephramite thou?' and he saith, 'No;'
Galaad occupa les gués du Jourdain pour couper la retraite à Ephraïm; et lorsqu’un fuyard d’Ephraïm disait: "Laissez-moi passer", les gens de Galaad lui demandaient: "Es-tu d’Ephraïm?" Que s’il disait: Non,
6 that they say to him, 'Say, I pray thee, Shibboleth;' and he saith, 'Sibboleth,' and is not prepared to speak right — and they seize him, and slaughter him at the passages of the Jordan, and there fall at that time, of Ephraim, forty and two chiefs.
on lui disait: "Prononce donc Chibboleth!" Il prononçait Sibboleth, ne pouvant l’articuler correctement; sur quoi on le saisissait et on le tuait près des gués du Jourdain. Il périt, en cette occurrence, quarante-deux mille hommes d’Ephraïm.
7 And Jephthah judged Israel six years, and Jephthah the Gileadite dieth, and is buried in [one of] the cities of Gilead.
Après avoir gouverné Israël pendant six ans, Jephté le Galaadite mourut, et fut enseveli dans une des villes de Galaad.
8 And after him Ibzan of Beth-Lehem judgeth Israel,
lsraël fut gouverné, après lui, par Ibçân, de Bethléem.
9 and he hath thirty sons and thirty daughters, he hath sent without and thirty daughters hath brought in to his sons from without; and he judgeth Israel seven years.
Il eut trente fils et trente filles. Il maria ces dernières au dehors et il introduisit dans sa famille trente brus pour ses fils. Après avoir gouverné sept ans Israël,
10 And Ibzan dieth, and is buried in Beth-Lehem.
lbçân mourut, et fut enseveli à Bethléem.
11 And after him Elon the Zebulunite judgeth Israel, and he judgeth Israel ten years,
Celui qui gouverna Israël après lui, fut Elon, le Zabulonite: il gouverna Israël dix années.
12 and Elon the Zebulunite dieth, and is buried in Aijalon, in the land of Zebulun.
Elon le Zabulonite, étant mort, fut enseveli à Ayyalon, dans la province de Zabulon.
13 And after him, Abdon son of Hillel, the Pirathonite, judgeth Israel,
Après lui, Israël fut gouverné par Abdon, fils de Hillel, de Piratôn.
14 and he hath forty sons, and thirty grandsons, riding on seventy ass-colts, and he judgeth Israel eight years.
Celui-ci eut quarante fils et trente petits-fils, lesquels avaient soixante-dix ânons pour montures. Après avoir gouverné huit ans Israël,
15 And Abdon son of Hillel, the Pirathonite, dieth, and is buried in Pirathon, in the land of Ephraim, in the hill-country of the Amalekite.
Abdon, fils de Hillel, de Piratôn, mourut; et il fut enseveli à Piratôn, au pays d’Ephraïm, sur le mont de l’Amalécite.
