< Jude 1 >
1 Judas, of Jesus Christ a servant, and brother of James, to those sanctified in God the Father, and in Jesus Christ kept — called,
Jude, a servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to those who are called, beloved in God the Father, and kept for Jesus Christ:
2 kindness to you, and peace, and love, be multiplied!
May mercy and peace and love be multiplied to you.
3 Beloved, all diligence using to write to you concerning the common salvation, I had necessity to write to you, exhorting to agonize for the faith once delivered to the saints,
Beloved, while I was making every effort to write to you about our common salvation, I had to write to you to exhort you to struggle earnestly for the faith that was entrusted once for all to the holy people.
4 for there did come in unobserved certain men, long ago having been written beforehand to this judgment, impious, the grace of our God perverting to lasciviousness, and our only Master, God, and Lord — Jesus Christ — denying,
For certain men have slipped in secretly among you. These are men who were marked out for condemnation. They are ungodly men who have changed the grace of our God into sensuality, and who deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.
5 and to remind you I intend, you knowing once this, that the Lord, a people out of the land of Egypt having saved, again those who did not believe did destroy;
Now I wish to remind you—although once you fully knew it—that the Lord saved a people out of the land of Egypt, but that afterward he destroyed those who did not believe.
6 messengers also, those who did not keep their own principality, but did leave their proper dwelling, to a judgment of a great day, in bonds everlasting, under darkness He hath kept, (aïdios )
Also angels who did not keep to their own position of authority, but who left their proper dwelling place—God has kept them in everlasting chains, in utter darkness, for the judgment on the great day. (aïdios )
7 as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them, in like manner to these, having given themselves to whoredom, and gone after other flesh, have been set before — an example, of fire age-during, justice suffering. (aiōnios )
It is just like Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities around them, which also indulged themselves in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural desires. They were displayed as examples of those who suffer the punishment in eternal fire. (aiōnios )
8 In like manner, nevertheless, those dreaming also the flesh indeed do defile, and lordship they put away, and dignities they speak evil of,
Yet in the same way, these dreamers also pollute their bodies. They reject authority, and they say slanderous things against the glorious ones.
9 yet Michael, the chief messenger, when, with the devil contending, he was disputing about the body of Moses, did not dare to bring up an evil-speaking judgment, but said, 'The Lord rebuke thee!'
But even Michael the archangel, when he was arguing with the devil and disputing with him about the body of Moses, did not dare to bring a slanderous judgment against him. Instead he said, “May the Lord rebuke you!”
10 and these, as many things indeed as they have not known, they speak evil of; and as many things as naturally (as the irrational beasts) they understand, in these they are corrupted;
But these people slander whatever they do not understand, and what they do understand—what unreasoning animals know by instinct—these are what destroy them.
11 woe to them! because in the way of Cain they did go on, and to the deceit of Balaam for reward they did rush, and in the gainsaying of Korah they did perish.
Woe to them! For they have walked in the way of Cain and have plunged into Balaam's error for profit. They have perished in Korah's rebellion.
12 These are in your love-feasts craggy rocks; feasting together with you, without fear shepherding themselves; clouds without water, by winds carried about; trees autumnal, without fruit, twice dead, rooted up;
These are the ones who are hidden reefs in your love feasts, when they feast with you shamelessly—shepherds who only feed themselves. They are clouds without rain, carried along by winds. They are autumn trees without fruit—twice dead, torn up by the roots.
13 wild waves of a sea, foaming out their own shames; stars going astray, to whom the gloom of the darkness to the age hath been kept. (aiōn )
They are violent waves in the sea, foaming out their own shame. They are wandering stars, for whom the gloom of thick darkness has been reserved forever. (aiōn )
14 And prophesy also to these did the seventh from Adam — Enoch — saying, 'Lo, the Lord did come in His saintly myriads,
Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about them, saying, “Look! The Lord is coming with thousands and thousands of his holy ones.
15 to do judgment against all, and to convict all their impious ones, concerning all their works of impiety that they did impiously, and concerning all the stiff things that speak against Him did impious sinners.'
He is coming to execute judgment on everyone. He is coming to convict all the ungodly of all the works they have done in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh words that ungodly sinners have spoken against him.”
16 These are murmurers, repiners; according to their desires walking, and their mouth doth speak great swellings, giving admiration to persons for the sake of profit;
These are grumblers, complainers, who follow their evil desires. They are loud boasters, who, for their own advantage, flatter others.
17 and ye, beloved, remember ye the sayings spoken before by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ:
But you, beloved, remember the words that were spoken in the past by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ.
18 that they said to you, that in the last time there shall be scoffers, after their own desires of impieties going on,
They said to you, “In the last time there will be mockers who will follow their own ungodly desires.”
19 these are those setting themselves apart, natural men, the Spirit not having.
It is these who cause divisions; they are worldly and they do not have the Spirit.
20 And ye, beloved, on your most holy faith building yourselves up, in the Holy Spirit praying,
But you, beloved, build yourselves up in your most holy faith, and pray in the Holy Spirit.
21 yourselves in the love of God keep ye, waiting for the kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ — to life age-during; (aiōnios )
Keep yourselves in God's love, and wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that brings you eternal life. (aiōnios )
22 and to some be kind, judging thoroughly,
Be merciful to those who doubt.
23 and some in fear save ye, out of the fire snatching, hating even the coat from the flesh spotted.
Save others by snatching them out of the fire. To others be merciful with fear. Hate even the garment stained by the flesh.
24 And to Him who is able to guard you not stumbling, and to set [you] in the presence of His glory unblemished, in gladness,
Now to the one who is able to keep you from stumbling and to cause you to stand before his glorious presence without blemish and with great joy,
25 to the only wise God our Saviour, [is] glory and greatness, power and authority, both now and to all the ages! Amen. (aiōn )
to the only God our Savior through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and power, before all time, now, and forevermore. Amen. (aiōn )
