Joshua 9

1 And it cometh to pass, when all the kings who [are] beyond the Jordan, in the hill-country, and in the low-country, and in every haven of the great sea, over-against Lebanon, the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, hear —

யோர்தானுக்கு மேற்கேயிருந்த அரசர்கள் இச்செயல்களைப்பற்றிக் கேள்விப்பட்டனர். இவர்கள் மலைநாட்டின் மேற்கேயுள்ள மலையடிவாரத்திலும், மத்திய தரைக்கடல் கரையோரம் முழுவதிலும் லெபனோன் வரையும் வாழ்ந்த ஏத்தியர், எமோரியர், கானானியர், பெரிசியர், ஏவியர், எபூசியர் ஆகிய நாடுகளின் அரசர்கள்.

2 that they gather themselves together to fight with Joshua, and with Israel — one mouth.

இந்த அரசர்கள் ஒன்றுசேர்ந்து யோசுவாவுக்கும், இஸ்ரயேலருக்கும் எதிராகப் போர் தொடுப்பதற்கென வந்தார்கள்.

3 And the inhabitants of Gibeon have heard that which Joshua hath done to Jericho and to Ai,

ஆயினும் எரிகோ, ஆயிபட்டணங்களுக்கு யோசுவா செய்தவற்றைக் கிபியோனின் மக்கள் கேள்விப்பட்டபோது,

4 and they work, even they, with subtilty, and go, and feign to be ambassadors, and take old sacks for their asses, and wine-bottles, old, and rent, and bound up,

கிபியோன் மக்கள் பிரதிநிதிகள்போல தந்திரமாக சென்றார்கள். அவர்கள் கந்தையான சாக்கு மூட்டைகளையும் கிழிந்து தைக்கப்பட்ட பழைய தோல் திராட்சைக் குடுவைகளையும் கழுதைகளில் ஏற்றிக்கொண்டு,

5 and sandals, old and patched, on their feet, and old garments upon them, and all the bread of their provision is dry — it was crumbs.

தேய்ந்ததும், தைக்கப்பட்டதுமான பழைய காலணிகளையும், பழைய உடைகளையும் அணிந்துகொண்டு, காய்ந்த பூசணம் பிடித்திருந்த அப்பங்களை உணவாக எடுத்துக்கொண்டு சென்றனர்.

6 And they go unto Joshua, unto the camp at Gilgal, and say unto him, and unto the men of Israel, 'From a land far off we have come, and now, make with us a covenant;'

இவ்வாறான கோலத்துடன் இக்குழுவினர் கில்காலில் முகாமிட்டிருந்த யோசுவாவிடம் சென்றனர். அவர்கள் யோசுவாவிடமும் இஸ்ரயேல் மக்களிடமும் சென்று, “நாங்கள் வெகுதொலைவிலுள்ள நாட்டிலிருந்து வருகிறோம். எனவே எங்களோடு ஒரு சமாதான ஒப்பந்தம் செய்துகொள்ளுங்கள்” என்றனர்.

7 and the men of Israel say unto the Hivite, 'It may be in our midst ye are dwelling, and how do we make with thee a covenant?'

அதற்கு இஸ்ரயேல் மனிதர் அந்த ஏவியரிடம், “ஒருவேளை நீங்கள் எங்களுக்கு அருகில் வாழ்பவர்களாய் இருக்கக்கூடும். அப்படியானால் நாங்கள் உங்களோடு எப்படி உடன்படிக்கை செய்துகொள்ள முடியும்?” என்று கேட்டனர்.

8 and they say unto Joshua, 'Thy servants we [are].' And Joshua saith unto them, 'Who [are] ye? and whence come ye?'

அதற்கு அவர்கள் யோசுவாவிடம், “நாங்கள் உங்கள் அடிமைகள்” என்றனர். ஆனாலும் யோசுவா அவர்களிடம், “நீங்கள் யார்? எங்கேயிருந்து வருகிறீர்கள்?” என்று கேட்டான்.

9 And they say unto him, 'From a land very far off have thy servants come, for the name of Jehovah thy God, for we have heard His fame, and all that He hath done in Egypt,

அதற்கு அவர்கள், “உங்கள் இறைவனாகிய யெகோவாவின் புகழின் நிமித்தம், உங்கள் அடியவர்கள் வெகுதொலைவிலுள்ள நாட்டிலிருந்து வந்திருக்கிறோம். ஏனெனில், அவர் எகிப்திலே செய்த செயல்கள் எல்லாவற்றைப்பற்றியும் நாங்கள் கேள்விப்பட்டோம்.

10 and all that He hath done to the two kings of the Amorite who [are] beyond the Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon, and to Og king of Bashan, who [is] in Ashtaroth.

மேலும், அவர் யோர்தானுக்குக் கிழக்கேயுள்ள அஸ்தரோத்தில் ஆட்சி செய்த எமோரியரின் இரண்டு அரசர்களான, எஸ்போனின் அரசனாகிய சீகோனுக்கும், பாசானின் அரசனாகிய ஓகுக்கும் செய்த எல்லாவற்றையும் கேள்விப்பட்டோம்.

11 'And our elders, and all the inhabitants of our land speak unto us, saying, Take in your hand provision for the way, and go to meet them, and ye have said unto them, Your servants we [are], and now, make with us a covenant;

எனவே எங்கள் சபைத்தலைவர்களும், எங்கள் தேசத்தில் வாழும் எல்லோரும் எங்களிடம், ‘உங்கள் பயணத்துக்குத் தேவையான உணவுகளை எடுத்துக்கொண்டு இஸ்ரயேலரிடம் போய், நாங்கள் உங்கள் அடிமைகளாயிருப்போம்; எங்களோடு ஒரு சமாதான ஒப்பந்தம் செய்யுங்கள் என்று சொல்லுங்கள்’ என்றார்கள்.

12 this our bread — hot we provided ourselves with it out of our houses, on the day of our coming out to go unto you, and now, lo, it is dry, and hath been crumbs;

உங்களிடம் வருவதற்கு நாங்கள் வீட்டிலிருந்து புறப்பட்டபோது, இந்த அப்பங்களைச் சுடச்சுடக் கட்டிக்கொண்டு வந்தோம். இப்பொழுதோ இவைகள் எவ்வளவாய்க் காய்ந்து பூசணம் பிடித்திருக்கின்றன என்று நீங்களே பாருங்கள்.

13 and these [are] the wine-bottles which we filled, new, and lo, they have rent; and these, our garments and our sandals, have become old, from the exceeding greatness of the way.'

இந்தத் திராட்சை தோற்குடுவைகள் நாங்கள் நிரப்பியபோது புதிதாய் இருந்தன. ஆனால் இப்பொழுது எவ்வளவாக கிழிந்துவிட்டன என்று பாருங்கள். மிக நீண்ட பிரயாணத்தினால், எங்கள் உடைகளும் பாதணிகளும் பழசாய்ப்போய்விட்டன” என்றார்கள்.

14 And the men take of their provision, and the mouth of Jehovah have not asked;

இஸ்ரயேலர், அவர்களுடைய உணவுப்பொருளில் கொஞ்சம் எடுத்து ருசிபார்த்தார்கள். ஆனால் யெகோவாவிடம் அவர்களைப்பற்றி விசாரிக்கவில்லை.

15 and Joshua maketh with them peace, and maketh with them a covenant, to keep them alive; and swear to them do the princes of the company.

அதன்பின் யோசுவா அவர்களை அங்கு வாழவிடுவதென ஒரு சமாதான ஒப்பந்தம் செய்தான். மக்கள் சமுதாயத்தில் இஸ்ரயேலரின் தலைவர்களும் ஒப்பந்தத்தை ஏற்று ஆணையிட்டு உறுதிசெய்தனர்.

16 And it cometh to pass, at the end of three days after that they have made with them a covenant, that they hear that they [are] their neighbours — that in their midst they are dwelling.

இஸ்ரயேலர் கிபியோன் நகரத்தாருடன் ஒப்பந்தம் செய்துகொண்ட மூன்றே நாட்களில், அவர்கள் தமக்கு அருகில் வசிக்கும் அயலகத்தாரெனக் கேள்விப்பட்டார்கள்.

17 And the sons of Israel journey and come in unto their cities on the third day — and their cities [are] Gibeon, and Chephirah, and Beeroth, and Kirjath-Jearim —

எனவே மூன்றாம் நாள் இஸ்ரயேலர் புறப்பட்டு ஏவியரின் பட்டணங்களான கிபியோன், கெபிரா, பேரோத், கீரியாத்யாரீம் என்னும் பட்டணங்களை அடைந்தார்கள்.

18 and the sons of Israel have not smitten them, for sworn to them have the princes of the company by Jehovah God of Israel, and all the company murmur against the princes.

ஆயினும் மக்கள் சமுதாயத் தலைவர்கள் இஸ்ரயேலின் இறைவனாகிய யெகோவாவின் பெயரில் ஆணையிட்டு உறுதியளித்தபடியால், இஸ்ரயேலர் அந்நகரங்களைத் தாக்கவில்லை. இதனால் கூடியிருந்த இஸ்ரயேல் மக்கள் எல்லோரும் தலைவர்களுக்கு எதிராக முறுமுறுத்தார்கள்.

19 And all the princes say unto all the company, 'We — we have sworn to them by Jehovah, God of Israel; and now, we are not able to come against them;

ஆனால் தலைவர்கள் எல்லோரும் அதற்கு மறுமொழியாக: “நாங்கள் இஸ்ரயேலரின் இறைவனாகிய யெகோவாவின் பெயரால் ஆணையிட்டுவிட்டோம். எனவே நாம் அவர்களை இப்பொழுது தொடமுடியாது.

20 this we do to them, and have kept them alive, and wrath is not upon us, because of the oath which we have sworn to them.'

மாறாக நாம் அவர்களுக்கு இப்படிச் செய்வோம். நாங்கள் அவர்களுக்கு அளித்த ஆணைப்படி வாக்குறுதியை மீறுவதனால் நம்மேல் இறைவனின் கோபம் ஏற்படாதபடிக்கு, அவர்களை நாம் வாழ உயிரோடு விட்டுவிடுவோம்.

21 And the princes say unto them, 'They live, and are hewers of wood and drawers of water for all the company, as the princes spake to them.'

அவர்கள் வாழட்டும்; அவர்கள் இஸ்ரயேலின் முழு சமுதாயத்தினருக்கும் மரம் வெட்டிகளாயும், தண்ணீர் கொண்டுவருபவர்களாயும் இருக்கட்டும்” என்றனர். இவ்வாறு தலைவர்களால் அவர்களுக்குக் கொடுத்த வாக்கு காப்பாற்றப்பட்டது.

22 And Joshua calleth for them, and speaketh unto them, saying, 'Why have ye deceived us, saying, We are very far from you, and ye in our midst dwelling?

பின் யோசுவா கிபியோனியரை தன்னிடம் வரச்செய்து அவர்களிடம், “நீங்கள் எங்களுக்கு அருகில் குடியிருந்துகொண்டு, வெகுதொலைவிலிருந்து வந்தவர்களெனக் கூறி ஏன் எங்களை ஏமாற்றினீர்கள்?

23 and now, cursed are ye, and none of you is cut off [from being] a servant, even hewers of wood and drawers of water, for the house of my God.'

இப்பொழுது நீங்கள் சபிக்கப்பட்டவர்கள். இனிமேல் என் இறைவனின் ஆலயத்திற்கு நீங்கள் மரம் வெட்டிகளாயும், தண்ணீர் கொண்டுவருபவர்களாயும் இருப்பீர்கள்; இவ்வேலையிலிருந்து நீங்கள் ஒருபோதும் நீங்கமாட்டீர்கள்” என்றான்.

24 And they answer Joshua and say, 'Because it was certainly declared to thy servants, that Jehovah thy God commanded Moses His servant to give to you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you; and we fear greatly for ourselves because of you, and we do this thing;

அதற்கு அவர்கள் யோசுவாவிடம், “உங்கள் இறைவனாகிய யெகோவா முழு நாட்டையும் உங்களுக்குக் கொடுக்கவும், அங்குள்ள குடிகளை உங்களுக்கு முன்பாக அழிக்கவும், மோசேக்கு எவ்வாறு கட்டளையிட்டார் என்பதை, உங்கள் அடிமைகளாகிய நாங்கள் கேள்விப்பட்டோம். எனவே உங்கள் நிமித்தம் எங்கள் உயிருக்குப் பயந்தே இப்படிச் செய்தோம்.

25 and now, lo, we [are] in thy hand, as [it is] good, and as [it is] right in thine eyes to do to us — do.'

இப்பொழுது நாங்கள் உமது கையிலேயே இருக்கிறோம். எது உமக்கு நல்லதாகவும், சரியாகவும் தோன்றுகிறதோ அதை எங்களுக்குச் செய்யும்” என்றார்கள்.

26 And he doth to them so, and delivereth them from the hand of the sons of Israel, and they have not slain them;

இவ்விதமாய் யோசுவா இஸ்ரயேலரிடமிருந்து கிபியோனியர்களைக் காப்பாற்றினான். இஸ்ரயேலர் அவர்களை அழிக்கவில்லை.

27 and Joshua maketh them on that day hewers of wood and drawers of water for the company, and for the altar of Jehovah, unto this day, at the place which He doth choose.

அவன் அன்றே கிபியோனியரை, இஸ்ரயேலின் மக்கள் சமுதாயத்திற்கும், யெகோவா தெரிந்துகொள்ளும் இடத்தில் அமைக்கப்படும் பலிபீடத்திற்கும் விறகு வெட்டுபவர்களாயும், தண்ணீர் கொண்டுவருபவர்களாயும் நியமித்தான். இன்றுவரை அவர்கள் அவ்வாறே இருக்கிறார்கள்.
