Joshua 20

1 And Jehovah speaketh unto Joshua, saying,

Ensuite le Seigneur parla à Josué, disant: Parle aux enfants d’Israël, et dis-leur:

2 'Speak unto the sons of Israel, saying, Give for you cities of refuge, as I have spoken unto you by the hand of Moses,

Séparez les villes des fugitifs dont je vous ai parlé par l’entremise de Moïse,

3 for the fleeing thither of a man-slayer smiting life inadvertently, without knowledge; and they have been to you for a refuge from the redeemer of blood.

Afin que s’y réfugie quiconque aura frappé une âme par mégarde, et qu’il puisse échapper à la colère du proche parent, qui est le vengeur du sang.

4 'When [one] hath fled unto one of these cities, and hath stood [at] the opening of the gate of the city, and hath spoken in the ears of the elders of that city his matter, then they have gathered him into the city unto them, and have given to him a place, and he hath dwelt with them.

Et lorsqu’il se sera réfugié dans une de ces villes, il se présentera devant la porte de la ville, et il dira aux anciens de cette ville, ce qui peut le prouver innocent: et ainsi ils le recevront et lui donneront un lieu pour habiter.

5 'And when the redeemer of blood doth pursue after him, then they do not shut up the man-slayer into his hand, for without knowledge he hath smitten his neighbour, and is not hating him hitherto;

Et lorsque le vengeur du sang le poursuivra, ils ne le livreront point entre ses mains, parce que c’est en l’ignorant qu’il a frappé son prochain, et que, deux ou trois jours auparavant, il n’était pas prouvé qu’il fût son ennemi.

6 and he hath dwelt in that city till his standing before the company for judgment, till the death of the chief priest who is in those days — then doth the man-slayer turn back and hath come unto his city, and unto his house, unto the city whence he fled.'

Et il habitera dans cette ville, jusqu’à ce qu’il comparaisse en jugement pour rendre compte de son action, et que meure le grand prêtre qu’il y aura en ce temps-là; alors reviendra l’homicide, et il rentrera dans sa ville et dans sa maison, de laquelle il avait fui.

7 And they sanctify Kedesh in Galilee, in the hill-country of Naphtali, and Shechem in the hill-country of Ephraim, and Kirjath-Arba (it [is] Hebron), in the hill-country of Judah;

Ils désignèrent donc Cédés en Galilée, sur la montagne de Nephthali, Sichem, sur la montagne d’Ephraïm, et Cariatharbé, qui est la même qu’Hébron, sur la montagne de Juda.

8 and beyond the Jordan, [at] Jericho eastward, they have given Bezer in the wilderness, in the plain, out of the tribe of Reuben, and Ramoth in Gilead out of the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan out of the tribe of Manasseh.

Et au-delà du Jourdain, contre la partie orientale, ils déterminèrent Bosor qui est située dans la plaine du désert, de la tribu de Ruben, Ramoth en Galaad, de la tribu de Gad, et Gaulon en Basan, de la tribu de Manassé.

9 These have been cities of meeting for all the sons of Israel, and for a sojourner who is sojourning in their midst, for the fleeing thither of any one smiting life inadvertently, and he doth not die by the hand of the redeemer of blood till his standing before the company.

Ces villes furent établies pour tous les enfants d’Israël, et pour les étrangers, qui habitaient parmi eux, afin que celui qui, par mégarde, aurait frappé une âme, s’y réfugiât, et ne mourût pas de la main du parent, désirant venger le sang versé, jusqu’à ce qu’il se présentât devant le peuple, pour défendre sa cause.
