< Job 22 >
1 And Eliphaz the Temanite answereth and saith: —
Pea naʻe toki tali ʻe Elifasi mei Timani, ʻo ne pehē,
2 To God is a man profitable, Because a wise man to himself is profitable?
‘ʻE faʻa ʻaonga ʻae tangata ki he ʻOtua,’ ʻo hangē ʻoku ʻaonga ʻaia ʻoku poto kiate ia pe?
3 Is it a delight to the Mighty One That thou art righteous? is it gain, That thou makest perfect thy ways?
He ʻoku ʻaonga ki he Māfimafi ʻa hoʻo māʻoniʻoni? Pe ʻaonga ki ai ʻa hoʻo fakahaohaoa ho ngaahi ʻaluʻanga?
4 Because of thy reverence Doth He reason [with] thee? He entereth with thee into judgment:
He te ne tautea koe ko ʻene manavahē kiate koe? Te ne fai koā mo koe ʻae fakamaau?
5 Is not thy wickedness abundant? And there is no end to thine iniquities.
ʻIkai ʻoku lahi ʻaupito hoʻo angahala? Pea taʻengata mo hoʻo ngaahi hia?
6 For thou takest a pledge of thy brother for nought, And the garments of the naked Thou dost strip off.
He kuo ke maʻu taʻetotonu ʻae totongi mei ho kāinga, pea kuo ke faʻao mei he telefua honau kofu.
7 Thou causest not the weary to drink water, And from the hungry thou withholdest bread.
Naʻe ʻikai te ke fakainua ʻae vaivai ʻaki ʻae vai, pea kuo ke taʻofi ʻae mā mei he fiekaia.
8 As to the man of arm — he hath the earth, And the accepted of face — he dwelleth in it.
Ka naʻe ʻoe tangata mālohi ʻae fonua; pea nofo ai ʻae tangata ongoongolelei.
9 Widows thou hast sent away empty, And the arms of the fatherless are bruised.
Kuo ke fekau atu taʻehameʻa ʻae kau fefine kuo mate honau husepāniti, pea kuo fesiʻi ʻae nima ʻoe kau tamai mate.
10 Therefore round about thee [are] snares, And trouble thee doth fear suddenly.
Ko ia kuo kāpui ai koe ʻe he ngaahi tauhele, pea ke puputuʻu ʻi he manavahē kuo fakafokifā;
11 Or darkness — thou dost not see, And abundance of waters doth cover thee.
Pea ko e fakapoʻuli ke ʻoua naʻa ke mamata, pea ʻufiʻufi koe ʻe he ngaahi vai lahi.
12 Is not God high [in] heaven? And see the summit of the stars, That they are high.
“ʻIkai ʻoku ʻi he langi ʻi ʻolunga ʻae ʻOtua? Pea ke vakai ki hono māʻolunga faufau ʻoe ngaahi fetuʻu lahi!
13 And thou hast said, 'What — hath God known? Through thickness doth He judge?
Ka ke pehē ʻe koe, ‘ʻOku ʻilo fēfē ʻe he ʻOtua? Pea ʻe faʻa fakamaau ʻe ia ʻi he loto ʻao fakapoʻuli?
14 Thick clouds [are] a secret place to Him, And He doth not see;' And the circle of the heavens He walketh habitually,
Ko e ʻufiʻufi kiate ia ʻae ngaahi ʻao matolu, ʻaia ʻoku ʻikai te ne mamata ai; pea ʻoku hāʻele pe ia ʻi he hāʻeleʻanga ʻi he langi.’
15 The path of the age dost thou observe, That men of iniquity have trodden?
He kuo ke fakaʻilongaʻi ʻe koe ʻae hala motuʻa, naʻe fou ai ʻae kakai angahala?
16 Who have been cut down unexpectedly, A flood is poured out on their foundation.
ʻAkinautolu naʻe tuʻusi hifo ʻi he teʻeki hoko honau kuonga, ʻakinautolu naʻe lōmaki honau tuʻunga ʻaki ʻae vai:
17 Those saying to God, 'Turn aside from us,' And what doth the Mighty One to them?
ʻAkinautolu naʻe pehē ki he ʻOtua, ‘ʻAlu ʻiate kimautolu:’ pea, ‘Ko e hā ʻe faʻa fai ʻe he Māfimafi maʻanautolu?’
18 And he hath filled their houses [with] good: (And the counsel of the wicked Hath been far from me.)
Ka naʻa ne fakapito ʻaki ʻae ngaahi meʻa lelei honau ngaahi fale: ka ʻoku mamaʻo ʻiate au ʻae fakakaukau ʻoe angahala.
19 See do the righteous and they rejoice, And the innocent mocketh at them,
ʻOku mamata ki ai ʻae māʻoniʻoni, pea fiefia: pea ʻoku kata manuki kiate kinautolu ʻe he taʻeangahala.
20 'Surely our substance hath not been cut off, And their excellency hath fire consumed.'
‘Koeʻuhi naʻe ʻikai tuʻusi ʻetau koloa, ka ko honau toe ʻoku fakaʻauha ʻe he afi.’
21 Acquaint thyself, I pray thee, with Him, And be at peace, Thereby thine increase [is] good.
“Fai ke ke ʻiloʻi ia, pea ke melino: pea ko ia ʻe hoko ai ʻae lelei kiate koe.
22 Receive, I pray thee, from His mouth a law, And set His sayings in thy heart.
ʻOku ou kole kiate koe, ke ke maʻu ʻae fono mei hono ngutu, pea ke faʻo ki ho loto ʻa ʻene ngaahi folofola.
23 If thou dost return unto the Mighty Thou art built up, Thou puttest iniquity far from thy tents.
Kapau te ke tafoki ki he Māfimafi, ʻe langa hake koe, pea te ke tukuange ke mamaʻo ʻae hia mei ho ngaahi fale.
24 So as to set on the dust a defence, And on a rock of the valleys a covering.
Pea te ke toki fokotuʻu ʻae koloa ʻo hangē ko e efu, mo e koula ʻo Ofeli ʻo hangē ko e ngaahi maka teka ʻoe tafeʻanga vai.
25 And the Mighty hath been thy defence, And silver [is] strength to thee.
ʻIo, ʻe hoko ʻae Māfimafi ko ho fakaū, pea te ke maʻu ʻo lahi ʻae siliva.
26 For then on the Mighty thou delightest thyself, And dost lift up unto God thy face,
He te ke toki fiefia ʻi he Māfimafi, pea hanga hake ho mata ki he ʻOtua.
27 Thou dost make supplication unto Him, And He doth hear thee, And thy vows thou completest.
Te ke fai haʻo lotu kiate ia, pea te ne ongoʻi koe, pea te ke fai hoʻo ngaahi fuakava.
28 And thou decreest a saying, And it is established to thee, And on thy ways hath light shone.
Te ke tuʻutuʻuni foki ha meʻa, pea ʻe fakamoʻoni ia kiate koe: pea ʻe ulo ʻae maama ki ho ngaahi hala.
29 For they have made low, And thou sayest, 'Lift up.' And the bowed down of eyes he saveth.
ʻOka ai ha tōkilalo, te ke toki pehē, ‘ʻOku ai ʻae hakeakiʻi;’ pea ʻe fakamoʻui ʻe ia ʻae angavaivai.
30 He delivereth the not innocent, Yea, he hath been delivered By the cleanness of thy hands.
ʻE fakahaofi ʻe ia ʻae fonua motu ʻoe taʻeangahala: pea ʻoku hao ia ʻi he māʻoniʻoni ʻo ho nima.”
