Jeremiah 34
1 The word that hath been unto Jeremiah from Jehovah — and Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and all his force, and all kingdoms of the land of the dominion of his hand, and all the peoples are fighting against Jerusalem, and against all its cities — saying:
Parole adressée à Jérémie par l’Eternel, alors que Nabuchodonosor, avec toute son armée, tous les royaumes de la terre où dominait son autorité et toutes les nations, faisait le siège de Jérusalem et de toutes les villes qui en dépendaient. En voici la teneur:
2 'Thus said Jehovah, God of Israel: Go, and thou hast spoken unto Zedekiah king of Judah, and hast said unto him, Thus said Jehovah: Lo, I am giving this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he hath burned it with fire,
"Ainsi parle l’Eternel, Dieu d’Israël: Va, adresse-toi à Sédécias, roi de Juda, et dis-lui: Voici ce que dit l’Eternel: Je vais faire tomber cette ville au pouvoir du roi de Babylone, qui la livrera aux flammes.
3 and thou, thou dost not escape out of his hand, for thou art certainly caught, and into his hand thou art given, and thine eyes see the eyes of the king of Babylon, and his mouth with thy mouth speaketh, and Babylon thou enterest.
Quant à toi, tu n’échapperas pas à ses mains; non, tu seras pris et remis entre ses mains, tes yeux verront les yeux du roi de Babylone, il te parlera bouche à bouche, et tu iras à Babylone!
4 'Only, hear a word of Jehovah, O Zedekiah king of Judah, Thus said Jehovah unto thee: Thou dost not die by sword,
Toutefois, écoute, ô Sédécias, roi de Juda, la parole de l’Eternel: Voici ce que l’Eternel prononce à ton sujet: Tu ne mourras pas par le glaive!
5 in peace thou diest, and with the burnings of thy fathers, the former kings who have been before thee, so they make a burning for thee; and Ah, lord, they lament for thee, for the word I have spoken — an affirmation of Jehovah.'
Tu mourras en paix, et comme on allumait un bûcher pour tes ancêtres, les anciens rois qui t’ont précédé, on en allumera en ton honneur, on mènera tes funérailles au cri de: "Hélas! Ô Maître! "Oui, telle est la parole que j’énonce, dit l’Eternel.
6 And Jeremiah the prophet speaketh unto Zedekiah king of Judah all these words in Jerusalem,
Jérémie, le prophète, répéta à Sédécias, roi de Juda, toutes ces paroles, dans Jérusalem;
7 and the forces of the king of Babylon are fighting against Jerusalem, and against all the cities of Judah that are left — against Lachish, and against Azekah, for these have been left among the cities of Judah, cities of fortresses.
tandis que l’armée du roi de Babylone assiégeait Jérusalem et toutes les villes de Juda qui résistaient encore Lakhich et Azèka, les seules places fortes de Juda qui fussent encore debout.
8 The word that hath been unto Jeremiah from Jehovah, after the making by the king Zedekiah of a covenant with all the people who [are] in Jerusalem, to proclaim to them liberty,
Parole adressée à Jérémie par l’Eternel, après que le roi Sédécias eut conclu une convention avec tout le peuple de Jérusalem, à l’effet d’y proclamer l’émancipation,
9 to send out each his man-servant, and each his maid-servant — the Hebrew and the Hebrewess — free, so as not to lay service on them, any on a Jew his brother;
afin que chacun remit en liberté son esclave et chacun sa servante, d’origine hébreue, afin que nul ne retînt dans la servitude son frère judéen.
10 and hearken do all the heads, and all the people who have come in to the covenant to send forth each his man-servant and each his maid-servant free, so as not to lay service on them any more, yea, they hearken, and send them away;
Tous les grands et tout le peuple, acquiesçant à la convention, avaient consenti à affranchir chacun son esclave et chacun sa servante et à ne plus les retenir en état de servitude: ils avaient obéi et les avaient émancipés.
11 and they turn afterwards, and cause the men-servants and the maid-servants to return, whom they had sent forth free, and they subdue them for men-servants and for maid-servants.
Mais après coup ils s’étaient ravisés, ils avaient repris les esclaves et les servantes affranchis par eux et les avaient contraints de redevenir esclaves.
12 And there is a word of Jehovah unto Jeremiah from Jehovah, saying:
C’Est alors que la parole divine fut adressée à Jérémie, de la part de l’Eternel, en ces termes:
13 'Thus said Jehovah, God of Israel, I — I made a covenant with your fathers in the day of My bringing them forth from the land of Egypt, from a house of servants, saying,
"Ainsi parle l’Eternel, Dieu d’Israël: J’Avais fait un pacte avec vos ancêtres, au jour où je les fis sortir du pays d’Egypte, de là maison de servitude, en disant:
14 At the end of seven years ye do send forth each his brother, the Hebrew, who is sold to thee, and hath served thee six years, yea, thou hast sent him forth free from thee: and your fathers hearkened not unto Me, nor inclined their ear.
Au début de la septième année, chacun de vous affranchira son frère hébreu qui lui aura été vendu; quand il t’aura servi six années, tu le renverras libre. Mais vos pères ne m’ont pas obéi, ils n’ont point prêté l’oreille.
15 'And ye turn back, ye to-day, and ye do that which is right in Mine eyes, to proclaim liberty each to his neighbour, and ye make a covenant before Me in the house over which My name is called.
Pour vous, vous vous étiez amendés un certain jour, en faisant ce qui est juste à mes yeux, en proclamant la liberté de vos frères; vous en aviez contracté l’engagement devant moi, dans la maison qui porte mon nom.
16 And — ye turn back, and pollute My name, and ye cause each his man-servant and each his maid-servant, whom he had sent forth free, (at their pleasure, ) to return, and ye subdue them to be to you for men-servants and for maid-servants.
Puis, vous ravisant, vous avez outragé mon nom, et chacun a repris son esclave et chacun sa servante, que vous aviez rendus, libres, à eux-mêmes, et vous les avez contraints à redevenir vos esclaves!
17 'Therefore, thus said Jehovah: Ye have not hearkened unto Me to proclaim freedom, each to his brother, and each to his neighbour; lo, I am proclaiming to you liberty — an affirmation of Jehovah — unto the sword, unto the pestilence, and unto the famine, and I have given you for a trembling to all kingdoms of the earth.
C’Est pourquoi ainsi parle l’Eternel: Vous ne m’avez point obéi, vous, quand il s’agissait pour chacun de proclamer la liberté de son frère, de son prochain; eh bien! moi, dit l’Eternel, je vais proclamer contre vous la liberté du glaive, de la peste et de la famine, et je ferai de vous un objet d’épouvante pour tous les royaumes de la terre.
18 'And I have given the men who are transgressing My covenant, who have not established the words of the covenant that they have made before Me, by the calf, that they have cut in two, and pass through between its pieces —
Et je livrerai ces hommes, violateurs de mon pacte, qui n’ont pas exécuté les termes de l’alliance conclue devant moi, en divisant un veau en deux parts et en passant entre les morceaux,
19 heads of Judah, and heads of Jerusalem, the officers, and the priests, and all the people of the land those passing through between the pieces of the calf —
ces princes de Juda et ces princes de Jérusalem, ces chambellans, ces prêtres ettous les gens du pays, qui ont passé entre les portions du veau,
20 yea, I have given them into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of those seeking their soul, and their carcase hath been for food to the fowl of the heavens, and to the beast of the earth.
je les livrerai aux mains de leurs ennemis, aux mains de ceux qui en veulent à leur vie, et leurs cadavres serviront de pâture aux oiseaux du ciel et aux bêtes de la terre.
21 'And Zedekiah king of Judah, and his heads, I give into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of those seeking their soul, and into the hand of the forces of the king of Babylon, that are going up from off you.
Et Sédécias, roi de Juda, et ses grands, je les abandonnerai à la merci de leurs ennemis, de ceux qui en veulent à leur vie, et de l’armée du roi de Babylone, qui vient de s’éloigner de vous.
22 Lo, I am commanding — an affirmation of Jehovah — and have brought them back unto this city, and they have fought against it, and captured it, and burned it with fire, and the cities of Judah I do make a desolation — without inhabitant.'
Voici, dit l’Eternel, je le décrète: je les fais revenir vers cette ville pour qu’ils l’attaquent; ils la prendront de vive force et la consumeront par le feu; et des villes de Juda je ferai une solitude, privée d’habitants.
