James 4
1 Whence [are] wars and fightings among you? not thence — out of your passions, that are as soldiers in your members?
Qual é a origem das lutas e discussões que vocês têm? O motivo não são as paixões que estão em conflito dentro de vocês?
2 ye desire, and ye have not; ye murder, and are zealous, and are not able to attain; ye fight and war, and ye have not, because of your not asking;
Vocês se queimam de desejo, mas não conseguem o que querem. Vocês podem até matar por causa das coisas que desejam, mas não conseguem ter o que estão buscando. Vocês discutem e brigam, mas não alcançam nada, pois não pedem a Deus por isso.
3 ye ask, and ye receive not, because evilly ye ask, that in your pleasures ye may spend [it].
E quando vocês pedem, não recebem nada, pois os seus motivos são errados. Vocês só pedem para usar o que recebem em seus prazeres egoístas.
4 Adulterers and adulteresses! have ye not known that friendship of the world is enmity with God? whoever, then, may counsel to be a friend of the world, an enemy of God he is set.
Infiéis! Será que não percebem que a amizade com o mundo representa ódio contra Deus? Quem quer ser amigo do mundo se torna inimigo de Deus.
5 Do ye think that emptily the Writing saith, 'To envy earnestly desireth the spirit that did dwell in us,'
Vocês acham que essa passagem das Sagradas Ecrituras não significa realmente o que ela diz: que o Espírito que Deus fez habitar em nós anseia por nós com ciúme?
6 and greater grace he doth give, wherefore he saith, 'God against proud ones doth set Himself up, and to lowly ones He doth give grace?'
Mas Deus nos deu ainda mais virtudes, como está escrito nas Sagradas Escrituras: “Deus é contra aqueles que são arrogantes, mas é bondoso com os que são humildes.”
7 be subject, then, to God; stand up against the devil, and he will flee from you;
Então, sujeitem-se a Deus, lutem contra o diabo, e ele fugirá de vocês.
8 draw nigh to God, and He will draw nigh to you; cleanse hands, ye sinners! and purify hearts, ye two-souled!
Aproximem-se de Deus e ele também se aproximará de vocês. Pecadores, lavem suas mãos! E vocês que dividem a sua lealdade entre dois mestres, purifiquem os seus pensamentos.
9 be exceeding afflicted, and mourn, and weep, let your laughter to mourning be turned, and the joy to heaviness;
Demonstrem arrependimento, gritem e chorem! Troquem o seu riso por choro e a sua alegria por tristeza.
10 be made low before the Lord, and He shall exalt you.
Sejam humildes diante do Senhor e ele os exaltará.
11 Speak not one against another, brethren; he who is speaking against a brother, and is judging his brother, doth speak against law, and doth judge law, and if law thou dost judge, thou art not a doer of law but a judge;
Irmãos, não falem mal uns dos outros. Quem fala mal de um companheiro na fé e o condena critica e fala mal da própria lei. Se você julga a lei, então, não é alguém que a cumpra e, sim, um juiz.
12 one is the lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy; thou — who art thou that dost judge the other?
Apenas Deus é quem faz as leis e quem julga. Ele é o único que tem o poder de salvar ou de destruir. Então, quem é você para julgar o seu próximo?
13 Go, now, ye who are saying, 'To-day and to-morrow we will go on to such a city, and will pass there one year, and traffic, and make gain;'
Agora, escutem, vocês que dizem: “Seja hoje ou amanhã, iremos para tal e tal cidade e ficaremos um ano fazendo negócios lá e vamos lucrar muito.”
14 who do not know the thing of the morrow; for what is your life? for it is a vapour that is appearing for a little, and then is vanishing;
Vocês não podem prever o amanhã. O que é a sua vida? Não passa de uma névoa, que aparece por um instante, e, depois, se vai.
15 instead of your saying, 'If the Lord may will, we shall live, and do this or that;'
Vocês deveriam dizer assim: “Se Deus quiser, nós estaremos vivos e faremos isto ou aquilo.”
16 and now ye glory in your pride; all such glorying is evil;
Mas, nesse momento, vocês estão sendo orgulhosos e se gabando. Todo esse orgulho é mau.
17 to him, then, knowing to do good, and not doing, sin it is to him.
Pois, vocês estão pecando se sabem fazer o que é certo, mas não o fazem.
