Isaiah 41
1 Keep silent towards Me, O isles, And the peoples pass on [to] power, They come nigh, then they speak, 'Together — to judgment we draw near.'
En silence, Îles, écoutez-moi! et que les peuples raniment leur force! qu'ils s'approchent et parlent! ensemble nous allons engager le débat.
2 Who stirred up from the east a righteous one? He calleth him to His foot, He giveth before him nations, And kings He causeth him to rule, He giveth [them] as dust [to] his sword, As driven stubble [to] his bow.
Qui de l'Orient a fait surgir celui dont la justice accompagne les pas? qui lui a livré les nations et assujetti des rois, de leur épée a fait comme une poussière, et de leur arc comme une balle emportée?
3 He pursueth them, he passeth over in safety A path with his feet he entereth not.
Il les poursuit et parcourt sain et sauf le chemin où son pied n'avait jamais marché.
4 Who hath wrought and done, Calling the generations from the first? I, Jehovah, the first, and with the last I [am] He.
Qui l'a fait et exécuté? Celui qui dès l'origine appela les générations, moi l'Éternel, qui suis le premier et qui demeure le même dans les derniers âges.
5 Seen have isles and fear, ends of the earth tremble, They have drawn near, yea, they come.
Les Îles le voient, et sont craintives, les extrémités de la terre tremblent: ils s'approchent, ils viennent.
6 Each his neighbour they help, And to his brother he saith, 'Be strong.'
Ils s'aident l'un l'autre; chacun dit à son frère: « Courage! »
7 And strengthen doth an artisan the refiner, A smoother [with] a hammer, Him who is beating [on] an anvil, Saying, 'For joining it [is] good,' And he strengtheneth it with nails, it is not moved!
Le forgeron encourage le fondeur, l'ouvrier qui polit au marteau celui qui bat l'enclume; il dit de la soudure: « Elle est bonne! » et il le fixe avec des clous, de peur qu'il ne bouge.
8 — And thou, O Israel, My servant, Jacob, whom I have chosen, Seed of Abraham, My lover,
Mais toi, Israël, mon serviteur, Jacob dont j'ai fait choix, race d'Abraham mon ami,
9 Whom I have taken hold of, from the ends of the earth, And from its near places I have called thee, And I say to thee, My servant Thou [art], I have chosen thee, and not rejected thee.
toi que j'ai été prendre au bout de la terre, et que j'ai appelé de son extrémité, à qui j'ai dit: Tu es mon serviteur; je te choisis, et ne te rejette point!
10 Be not afraid, for with thee I [am], Look not around, for I [am] thy God, I have strengthened thee, Yea, I have helped thee, yea, I upheld thee, With the right hand of My righteousness.
Ne crains point, car je suis avec toi! ne t'épouvante point, car je suis ton Dieu, je te fortifie, je te suis en aide, et te soutiens de mon bras sauveur.
11 Lo, all those displeased with thee, They are ashamed and blush, They are as nothing, yea, perish Do the men who strive with thee.
Voici, ils seront confus et honteux, tous tes furieux ennemis; ils seront comme n'étant pas; ils périront, les hommes animés contre toi;
12 Thou seekest them, and findest them not, The men who debate with thee, They are as nothing, yea, as nothing, The men who war with thee.
tu les chercheras et ne les trouveras plus, ceux qui te cherchaient querelle; ils seront comme rien et comme le néant, les hommes qui te livraient la guerre.
13 For I, Jehovah thy God, Am strengthening thy right hand, He who is saying to thee, 'Fear not, I have helped thee.'
Car c'est moi, l'Éternel, ton Dieu, qui te prends par la main, qui te dis: Ne crains point, je suis ton aide!
14 Fear not, O worm Jacob, ye men of Israel, I helped thee, an affirmation of Jehovah, Even thy redeemer, the Holy One of Israel.
Ne crains point, vermisseau de Jacob, petit reste d'Israël! je suis ton aide, dit l'Éternel, et le Saint d'Israël est ton vengeur.
15 Lo, I have set thee for a new sharp threshing instrument, Possessing teeth, thou threshest mountains, And beatest small, and hills as chaff thou makest.
Voici, je fais de toi un traîneau tranchant et neuf, armé de doubles lames; tu tritureras, pulvériseras les montagnes, et réduiras les collines en paille menue.
16 Thou winnowest them, and a wind lifteth them up, And a whirlwind scattereth them, And thou — thou rejoicest in Jehovah, In the Holy One of Israel dost boast thyself.
Tu les vanneras et le vent les emportera, et l'ouragan les dissipera; mais l'Éternel sera ta joie, et le Saint d'Israël ta gloire.
17 The poor and the needy are seeking water, And there is none, Their tongue with thirst hath failed, I, Jehovah do answer them, The God of Israel — I forsake them not.
Les malheureux et les indigents cherchent de l'eau, et il n'y en a pas; leur langue est desséchée par la soif; moi, l'Éternel, je les exaucerai, Dieu d'Israël je ne les abandonnerai pas.
18 I open on high places rivers, And in midst of valleys fountains, I make a wilderness become a pond of water, And a dry land become springs of water.
Sur les coteaux nus je ferai jaillir des fleuves, et des sources au milieu des vallons, je changerai le désert en un lac et la terre aride en sources d'eaux.
19 I give in a wilderness the cedar, Shittah, and myrtle, and oil-tree, I set in a desert the fir-pine and box-wood together.
Je mettrai au désert le cèdre, l'acacia, et le myrte et l'olivier; je planterai dans les lieux incultes le cyprès, le platane et le mélèze réunis,
20 So that they see, and know, And regard, and act wisely together, For the hand of Jehovah hath done this, And the Holy One of Israel hath prepared it.
afin qu'ils voient, et qu'ils sachent, et qu'ils remarquent, et qu'ils sentent tous que la main de l'Éternel a fait ces choses, et que le Saint d'Israël en est l'auteur.
21 Bring near your cause, saith Jehovah, Bring nigh your mighty ones, saith the king of Jacob.
Alléguez vos moyens, dit l'Éternel! produisez vos arguments, dit le Roi de Jacob!
22 They bring nigh, and declare to us that which doth happen, The first things — what they [are] declare ye, And we set our heart, and know their latter end, Or the coming things cause us to hear.
Qu'ils les produisent et nous disent ce qui doit arriver! Les premières prédictions, que furent-elles? Dites-le, afin que nous y prenions garde, et que nous en observions l'issue; ou, annoncez-nous l'avenir!
23 Declare the things that are coming hereafter, And we know that ye [are] gods, Yea, ye may do good or do evil, And we look around and see [it] together.
Dites les événements des temps futurs, afin que nous reconnaissions que vous êtes des dieux! Faites quelque chose en bien ou en mal, afin que nous nous en étonnions ensemble et que nous le voyions!
24 Lo, ye [are] of nothing, and your work of nought, An abomination — it fixeth on you.
Voici, vous n'êtes rien, et votre œuvre est le néant: abominable est quiconque fait choix de vous.
25 I have stirred up [one] from the north, And he cometh, From the rising of the sun he calleth in My name, And he cometh in [on] prefects as [on] clay, And as a potter treadeth down mire.
Je le fis surgir du nord, et il vint de l'orient, celui qui invoquera mon nom, et il marche sur les princes comme sur l'argile, comme un potier foule la glaise.
26 Who hath declared from the first, and we know? And beforetime, and we say, 'Righteous?' yea, there is none declaring, Yea, there is none proclaiming, Yea, there is none hearing your sayings.
Qui l'a annoncé dès le commencement, pour que nous le sachions? et dès longtemps, pour que nous disions: « C'est vrai »? Personne ne l'a annoncé, personne ne l'a prédit, personne n'a entendu vos paroles.
27 First to Zion, Behold, behold them, And to Jerusalem one proclaiming tidings I give,
Le premier à Sion j'ai dit: Voilà, les voilà! et à Jérusalem j'ai donné un message de paix.
28 And I see that there is no man, Yea, of these that there is no counsellor, And I ask them, and they return word:
Je regarde, et personne n'est là; parmi eux, pas un conseiller que je puisse interroger et qui puisse répondre.
29 'Lo, all of them [are] vanity, Nought [are] their works, Wind and emptiness their molten images!'
Voici, tous ils ne sont rien, leurs œuvres sont un néant et leurs idoles un souffle vain.
