Isaiah 36
1 And it cometh to pass, in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah, come up hath Sennacherib king of Asshur against all the fenced cities of Judah, and seizeth them.
Et il arriva en la quatorzième année du règne du roi Ezéchias, que Sennachérib, roi d’Assyrie, monta contre toutes les villes fortifiées de Juda, et les prit.
2 And the king of Asshur sendeth Rabshakeh from Lachish to Jerusalem, unto the king Hezekiah, with a heavy force, and he standeth by the conduit of the upper pool, in the highway of the fuller's field,
Et le roi des Assyriens envoya Rabsacès, de Lachis à Jérusalem, vers le roi Ezéchias, avec une armée considérable; et il s’arrêta à l’aqueduc de la piscine supérieure, dans la voie du Champ du foulon.
3 and go forth unto him doth Eliakim son of Hilkiah, who [is] over the house, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah son of Asaph, the remembrancer.
Et sortit vers lui Eliacim, fils d’Helcias, qui était intendant de la maison, ainsi que Sobna, le scribe, et Joahé, fils d’Asaph, qui tenait les registres.
4 And Rabshakeh saith unto them, 'Say ye, I pray you, unto Hezekiah, 'Thus said the great king, the king of Asshur, What [is] this confidence in which thou hast confided?
Et Rabsacès leur dit: Dites à Ezéchias: Voici ce qu’a dit le grand roi, roi des Assyriens: Quelle est cette confiance dont vous êtes animés?
5 I have said: Only, a word of the lips! counsel and might [are] for battle: now, on whom hast thou trusted, that thou hast rebelled against me?
Ou par quel conseil ou avec quelle force prétendez-vous vous révolter? en qui avez-vous confiance, pour que vous vous soyez retirés de moi?
6 'Lo, thou hast trusted on the staff of this broken reed — on Egypt — which a man leaneth on, and it hath gone into his hand, and pierced it — so [is] Pharaoh king of Egypt to all those trusting on him.
Voici que vous vous appuyez sur ce bâton de roseau cassé, l’Egypte; bâton qui, si un homme s’appuie dessus, entrera dans sa main et la percera; ainsi est Pharaon, roi d’Egypte, pour tous ceux qui se confient en lui.
7 'And dost thou say unto me, Unto Jehovah our God we have trusted? is it not He, whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah hath turned aside, and saith to Judah and to Jerusalem, Before this altar ye do bow yourselves?
Que si vous me répondez: C’est dans le Seigneur notre Dieu que nous nous confions, n’est-ce pas celui dont Ezéchias a détruit les hauts lieux et les autels, et a dit à Juda et à Jérusalem: C’est devant cet autel que vous adorerez?
8 'And now, negotiate, I pray thee, with my lord the king of Asshur, and I give to thee two thousand horses, if thou art able to put for thee riders on them.
Et maintenant livrez-vous à mon maître, le roi des Assyriens, et je vous donnerai deux mille chevaux, et vous ne pourrez fournir par vous-mêmes des cavaliers pour eux.
9 And how dost thou turn back the face of one captain of the least of the servants of my lord, and dost trust for thee on Egypt, for chariot and for horsemen?
Et comment soutiendrez-vous la face du juge d’un seul lieu, d’entre les moindres officiers de mon maître? Que si vous vous confiez dans l’Egypte, dans ses quadriges et dans ses cavaliers,
10 And now, without Jehovah have I come up against this land to destroy it? Jehovah said unto me, Go up unto this land, and thou hast destroyed it.'
Est-ce donc maintenant sans le Seigneur que je suis monté dans cette terre pour la perdre entièrement? Le Seigneur m’a dit: Monte sur cette terre, et perds-la entièrement.
11 And Eliakim saith — and Shebna and Joah — unto Rabshakeh, 'Speak, we pray thee, unto thy servants [in] Aramaean, for we are understanding; and do not speak unto us [in] Jewish, in the ears of the people who [are] on the wall.'
Et dit Eliacim, ainsi que Sobna et Joahé, à Rabsacès: Parlez à vos serviteurs en langue syriaque; car nous la comprenons; ne nous parlez pas en langue juive aux oreilles du peuple qui est sur le mur.
12 And Rabshakeh saith, 'Unto thy lord, and unto thee, hath my lord sent me to speak these words? is it not for the men — those sitting on the wall to eat their own dung and to drink their own water with you?'
Et Rabsacès leur dit: Est-ce donc vers ton maître et vers toi que m’a envoyé mon maître, pour dire toutes ces paroles, et non pas plutôt vers les hommes qui sont sur le mur, pour qu’ils mangent leurs excréments et boivent leur urine avec vous?
13 And Rabshakeh standeth and calleth with a great voice [in] Jewish, and saith, 'Hear ye the words of the great king, the king of Asshur:
Et Rabsacès se tint debout et cria d’une voix forte en hébreu: Ecoutez les paroles du grand roi, du roi des Assyriens.
14 Thus said the king, Let not Hezekiah lift you up, for he is not able to deliver you;
Voici ce que dit le roi: Qu’Ezéchias ne vous séduise point; parce qu’il ne pourra vous arracher à ma main.
15 and let not Hezekiah make you trust unto Jehovah, saying, Jehovah doth certainly deliver us, this city is not given into the hand of the king of Asshur.
Et qu’Ezéchias ne vous donne point de confiance dans le Seigneur, disant: Le Seigneur nous délivrera certainement; cette cité ne sera pas livrée à la main du roi des Assyriens.
16 'Do not hearken unto Hezekiah, for thus said the king of Asshur, Make ye with me a blessing, and come out unto me, and eat ye each of his vine, and each of his fig-tree, and drink ye each the waters of his own well,
N’écoutez point Ezéchias; car voici ce que dit le roi des Assyriens: Faites la paix avec moi, et sortez vers moi, et vous mangerez chacun de votre vigne et chacun de votre figuier, vous boirez chacun de l’eau de votre citerne,
17 till my coming in, and I have taken you unto a land like your own land, a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards;
Jusqu’à ce que je vienne et que je vous transporte dans une terre qui est comme votre terre, une terre de blé et de vin, une terre de pains et de vignes.
18 lest Hezekiah doth persuade you, saying, Jehovah doth deliver us. 'Have the gods of the nations delivered each his land out of the hand of the king of Asshur?
Qu’Ezéchias ne vous déconcerte pas, disant: Le Seigneur nous délivrera. Est-ce que les dieux des nations ont délivré chacun sa terre de la main du roi des Assyriens?
19 Where [are] the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where the gods of Sepharvaim, that they have delivered Samaria out of my hand?
Où est le Dieu d’Emath et d’Arphad? où est le Dieu de Sépharvaïm? est-ce qu’ils ont délivré Samarie de ma main?
20 Who among all the gods of these lands [are] they who have delivered their land out of my hand, that Jehovah doth deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?'
Quel est celui de tous les dieux de ces terres qui a arraché sa terre à ma main, pour que le Seigneur arrache Jérusalem de ma main?
21 And they keep silent, and have not answered him a word, for a command of the king is, saying, 'Do not answer him.'
Et ils gardèrent le silence, et ils ne lui répondirent pas un mot. Le roi en effet l’avait commandé, disant: Ne lui répondez pas.
22 And Eliakim son of Hilkiah, who [is] over the house, cometh in, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah son of Asaph, the remembrancer, unto Hezekiah with rent garments, and they declare to him the words of Rabshakeh.
Et Eliacim, fils d’Helcias, qui était intendant de la maison, et Sobna, le scribe, et Joahé, fils d’Asaph, qui tenait les registres, entrèrent auprès d’ Ezéchias, leurs vêlements déchirés, et ils lui rapportèrent les paroles de Rabsacès.
