Genesis 42
1 And Jacob seeth that there is corn in Egypt, and Jacob saith to his sons, 'Why do you look at each other?'
Vio Jacob que había grano en Egipto, y dijo a sus hijos: “¿Por qué os miráis unos a otros?”.
2 he saith also, 'Lo, I have heard that there is corn in Egypt, go down thither, and buy for us from thence, and we live and do not die;'
Dijo: “He aquí, he oído que hay grano en Egipto. Bajad allí y comprad para nosotros de allí, para que vivamos y no muramos”.
3 and the ten brethren of Joseph go down to buy corn in Egypt,
Los diez hermanos de José bajaron a comprar grano a Egipto.
4 and Benjamin, Joseph's brother, Jacob hath not sent with his brethren, for he said, 'Lest mischief meet him.'
Pero Jacob no envió a Benjamín, el hermano de José, con sus hermanos, porque dijo: “No sea que le pase algo malo.”
5 And the sons of Israel come to buy in the midst of those coming, for the famine hath been in the land of Canaan,
Los hijos de Israel fueron a comprar entre los que venían, porque había hambre en la tierra de Canaán.
6 and Joseph is the ruler over the land, he who is selling to all the people of the land, and Joseph's brethren come and bow themselves to him — face to the earth.
José era el gobernador de la tierra. Era él quien vendía a todo el pueblo de la tierra. Vinieron los hermanos de José y se inclinaron ante él con el rostro hacia la tierra.
7 And Joseph seeth his brethren, and discerneth them, and maketh himself strange unto them, and speaketh with them sharp things, and saith unto them, 'From whence have ye come?' and they say, 'From the land of Canaan — to buy food.'
José vio a sus hermanos y los reconoció, pero se comportó con ellos como un extraño y les habló con rudeza. Les dijo: “¿De dónde venís?”. Dijeron: “De la tierra de Canaán, para comprar comida”.
8 And Joseph discerneth his brethren, but they have not discerned him,
José reconoció a sus hermanos, pero ellos no lo reconocieron a él.
9 and Joseph remembereth the dreams which he dreamed of them, and saith unto them, 'Ye [are] spies; to see the nakedness of the land ye have come.'
José se acordó de los sueños que había soñado con ellos y les dijo: “¡Sois espías! Habéis venido a ver la desnudez de la tierra”.
10 And they say unto him, 'No, my lord, but thy servants have come to buy food;
Le dijeron: “No, mi señor, pero tus siervos han venido a comprar comida.
11 we [are] all of us sons of one man, we [are] right men; thy servants have not been spies;'
Todos somos hijos de un hombre; somos hombres honrados. Tus siervos no son espías”.
12 and he saith unto them, 'No, but the nakedness of the land ye have come to see;'
Les dijo: “¡No, pero habéis venido a ver la desnudez de la tierra!”
13 and they say, 'Thy servants [are] twelve brethren; we [are] sons of one man in the land of Canaan, and lo, the young one [is] with our father to-day, and the one is not.'
Ellos dijeron: “Nosotros, tus siervos, somos doce hermanos, hijos de un solo hombre en la tierra de Canaán; y he aquí que el menor está hoy con nuestro padre, y uno ya no está.”
14 And Joseph saith unto them, 'This [is] that which I have spoken unto you, saying, Ye [are] spies,
José les dijo: “Es como les dije, diciendo: ‘Ustedes son espías’.
15 by this ye are proved: Pharaoh liveth! if ye go out from this — except by your young brother coming hither;
Por esto seréis probados. Por la vida del Faraón, no saldréis de aquí, a menos que venga vuestro hermano menor.
16 send one of you, and let him bring your brother, and ye, remain ye bound, and let your words be proved, whether truth be with you: and if not — Pharaoh liveth! surely ye [are] spies;'
Enviad a uno de vosotros y que traiga a vuestro hermano, y seréis atados, para que se compruebe si vuestras palabras son verdaderas, o si por la vida del faraón ciertamente sois espías.”
17 and he removeth them unto charge three days.
Los puso a todos juntos en custodia durante tres días.
18 And Joseph saith unto them on the third day, 'This do and live; God I fear!
Al tercer día, José les dijo: “Haced esto y vivid, porque temo a Dios.
19 if ye [are] right men, let one of your brethren be bound in the house of your ward, and ye, go, carry in corn [for] the famine of your houses,
Si sois hombres honrados, dejad que uno de vuestros hermanos sea atado en vuestra prisión; pero vosotros id, llevad grano para el hambre de vuestras casas.
20 and your young brother ye bring unto me, and your words are established, and ye die not;' and they do so.
Traedme a vuestro hermano menor; así se verificarán vuestras palabras y no moriréis.” Así lo hicieron.
21 And they say one unto another, 'Verily we [are] guilty concerning our brother, because we saw the distress of his soul, in his making supplication unto us, and we did not hearken: therefore hath this distress come upon us.'
Se dijeron unos a otros: “Ciertamente somos culpables respecto a nuestro hermano, ya que vimos la angustia de su alma, cuando nos suplicó, y no quisimos escucharlo. Por eso nos ha sobrevenido esta angustia”.
22 And Reuben answereth them, saying, 'Spake I not unto you, saying, Sin not against the lad? and ye hearkened not; and his blood also, lo, it is required.'
Rubén les respondió: “¿No os dije que no pecarais contra el niño, y no quisisteis escuchar? Por eso también, he aquí que se requiere su sangre”.
23 And they have not known that Joseph understandeth, for the interpreter [is] between them;
Ellos no sabían que José los entendía, pues había un intérprete entre ellos.
24 and he turneth round from them, and weepeth, and turneth back unto them, and speaketh unto them, and taketh from them Simeon, and bindeth him before their eyes.
Se apartó de ellos y lloró. Luego volvió a ellos y les habló, y tomó a Simeón de entre ellos y lo ató ante sus ojos.
25 And Joseph commandeth, and they fill their vessels [with] corn, also to put back the money of each unto his sack, and to give to them provision for the way; and one doth to them so.
Entonces José dio la orden de llenar sus sacos de grano, y de devolver a cada uno su dinero en su saco, y de darles comida para el camino. Así se hizo con ellos.
26 And they lift up their corn upon their asses, and go from thence,
Cargaron sus asnos con el grano y se fueron de allí.
27 and the one openeth his sack to give provender to his ass at a lodging-place, and he seeth his money, and lo, it [is] in the mouth of his bag,
Cuando uno de ellos abrió su saco para dar de comer a su asno en el lugar de alojamiento, vio su dinero. Estaba en la boca de su saco.
28 and he saith unto his brethren, 'My money hath been put back, and also, lo, in my bag:' and their heart goeth out, and they tremble, one to another saying, 'What [is] this God hath done to us!'
Dijo a sus hermanos: “¡Mi dinero se ha recuperado! He aquí que está en mi saco”. Les falló el corazón, y se volvieron temblando unos a otros, diciendo: “¿Qué es esto que Dios ha hecho con nosotros?”
29 And they come in unto Jacob their father, to the land of Canaan, and they declare to him all the things meeting them, saying,
Vinieron a Jacob, su padre, a la tierra de Canaán, y le contaron todo lo que les había sucedido, diciendo:
30 'The man, the lord of the land, hath spoken with us sharp things, and maketh us as spies of the land;
“El hombre, el señor de la tierra, habló con nosotros con aspereza y nos tomó por espías del país.
31 and we say unto him, We [are] right men, we have not been spies,
Nosotros le dijimos: ‘Somos hombres honestos. No somos espías.
32 we [are] twelve brethren, sons of our father, the one is not, and the young one [is] to-day with our father in the land of Canaan.
Somos doce hermanos, hijos de nuestro padre; uno ya no existe, y el más joven está hoy con nuestro padre en la tierra de Canaán.’
33 'And the man, the lord of the land, saith unto us, By this I know that ye [are] right men — one of your brethren leave with me, and [for] the famine of your houses take ye and go,
El hombre, el señor de la tierra, nos dijo: ‘Por esto sabré que sois hombres honrados: dejad conmigo a uno de vuestros hermanos, tomad grano para el hambre de vuestras casas y seguid vuestro camino.
34 and bring your young brother unto me, and I know that ye [are] not spies, but ye [are] right men; your brother I give to you, and ye trade with the land.'
Traedme a vuestro hermano menor. Entonces sabré que no sois espías, sino que sois hombres honrados. Así te entregaré a tu hermano, y comerciarás en la tierra”.
35 And it cometh to pass, they are emptying their sacks, and lo, the bundle of each man's silver [is] in his sack, and they see their bundles of silver, they and their father, and are afraid;
Cuando vaciaron sus sacos, he aquí que el fajo de dinero de cada uno estaba en su saco. Cuando ellos y su padre vieron sus fajos de dinero, se asustaron.
36 and Jacob their father saith unto them, 'Me ye have bereaved; Joseph is not, and Simeon is not, and Benjamin ye take — against me have been all these.'
Jacob, su padre, les dijo: “¡Me habéis privado de mis hijos! Ya no está José, ya no está Simeón, y queréis llevaros a Benjamín. Todo esto es contra mí”.
37 And Reuben speaketh unto his father, saying, 'My two sons thou dost put to death, if I bring him not in unto thee; give him into my hand, and I — I bring him back unto thee;'
Rubén habló a su padre diciendo: “Mata a mis dos hijos si no te lo traigo. Confíalo a mi cuidado, y te lo traeré de nuevo”.
38 and he saith, 'My son doth not go down with you, for his brother [is] dead, and he by himself is left; when mischief hath met him in the way in which ye go, then ye have brought down my grey hairs in sorrow to sheol.' (Sheol h7585)
Dijo: “Mi hijo no bajará con vosotros, pues su hermano ha muerto y sólo queda él. Si le ocurre algún daño en el camino por el que vas, entonces harás descender mis canas con dolor al Seol”. (Sheol h7585)
